How I Remember Dad

I am a daughter, but I’m dad’s namesake. For four generations, “middle-name” Braxtons. Dad taught me much “Tobble” meant fair to middlin’ he was tobble patient teaching me to drive. I cried at church - didn’t know how to tell time. He took me home right then and showed me how. Dad was the fixer. “Pert near” meant almost; he pert near built our house. He let me do the roof shingles. His strong hearty laugh never met a stranger. “Peak ed” meant sickly and cancer left him peak ed. Christmas 1989 he said goodbye. He taught us to be prepared - He was ready to go, peaceful and sure.

Oh...dear. What a touching piece. My dad will be 78 in a few days. Can't imagine life without him, but I did lose my MAMA in 2000.... :( I know the pain of losing a parent. She died of MS...Had to see her eventually be wheelchair bound...unable to even feed herself or to care for her needs. It's hard...but we live with the memories...that bring us joy...as yor poem has done! Lovely write. I applaud you! This was WAY above tobble! ;)

Thank you, Eileen. So sorry to hear of your mom's difficulties...my mom had a stroke and lost her left side. She managed well in a intermediate care center for about a year and then for another nine months she was in and out of the hospital. I appreciate both of them more than I ever told them.
