A Gift In Evergreen

A Gift in Evergreen Each year we climb the narrow road Through cedar, pine and redwood Until it pokes its hatless head In the fog washed air to breath The perfume of the crest. A special day dawns for us, A family day to share, Watching a frisky winter sun Lay quilts of sunbeams on the hills And harvest treasures of the season. We come, again, to find A living symbol, ornament, Of God’s handiwork to decorate With lights and bells and stars, Reminder of a star so long ago. Eagerly we stride through fields of grass And stands of evergreens that smell So sweetly pungent and so fresh Their perfumed dews reach up To crown our heads with fragrant wreaths. The trees in welcome fluff their boughs Stretching up into heaven’s blue Then reach again expanding in their joy To remember the divine birth Within the memories of Christmas present. Our time, now gone, we bring with us A friend – tall and straight and green – To wear the twinkling treasures of the holidays, A mountain gift of peace For all who see Nativity in evergreen. High above the freeway city, Between the winter and Yuletide, We give to one another gifts Of time and laughter Paused to welcome Christmas come. 11-29-22 Contest: Write a Christmas Poem Sponsor: Constance La France We have gone Christmas tree hunting every year as a family from the time our oldest was a year old. I felt a whole lot better about cutting down our tree knowing we were only topping a tree, leaving several whirls of branches at the base to grow into a new tree. Over the years we have seen these tiny whirls grow into beautiful new Christmas trees - truly life renewed.

What a glorious unmatched 'for ever green' scent. It brought back memories of my family doing the same and my children listening to a book titled, The Little Tree. The text on each pg. was E.E Cummings's poem with the same title. It was illustrated with beautiful colored pencils. It made me think of your poem. They are both peaceful, lovely and memorable. I'm so very glad to have found your poem.

Thank you so much Constance not only for your placement but for your lovely comment. Our Christmas tree hunt is a treasured family outing that has included four generations! We always hope and pray the weather will cooperate. Being together as a family is a rare treasure. This year our youngest son and his family were here from out of town. When planning their time the first thing they mentioned was Christmas tree hunting! Very special! Blessings of joy to you!

Thank you so much Andrea! Four generations have participated in this family tradition. That is amazing to me. Even one of our daughter-in-law's mother had joined us! One year I did a calligraphy of the poem and an illustration as a Christmas gift to the family. Thank you for your note and your congratulations. Blessings of joy!

Dear Sam, Christmas is the scent of pine trees to me. Your poem is so lovely~ "watching a frisky winter sun lay quilts of sunbeams on the hills... ~Thank you for only topping the tree. The last few years of my husband's life, we bought potted pinion pines to later plant.

Hi Ann! I so agree with you about the scent of a pine or fir tree! We usually bring everyone's tree back in our SUV, the scent is just heavenly - the true perfume of Christmas! What a beautiful tradition you and your husband had. Did you plant the pinion pines in your yard. Each one is a beautiful memory. Your tradition would make a lovely Christmas poem. I am so sorry, even now, to hear about your husband. Thank you for your lovely note. Sending you blessings of joy!

Hi Deb, thank you so much for your thoughtful note! Picking out our Christmas tree up on the mountain is a treasured family event followed by burgers and sometimes cookies! It is a wonderful way to start the holiday season with gifts of time. It is so much fun to look back on the pictures taken each year! Hope all is welcome. Blessings of joy to you!

Growing up in the desert of West Texas as I did, there was no place to go to look for and chop down a Christmas tree in the wild. But the ones we got from the lot in town that sold them were just as much fun to decorate. BOL in the contest, Sam.

Hi Jim, I think there's something really special about a Christmas tree whether you get to go tree hunting or buy it from a Christmas tree lot - a seasonal ritual (buying then decorating) shared by a family no matter the size of the family or source of the tree! Thank you for your thoughtful note and best wishes. Blessings!

Thank you so much! I couldn't agree with you more Charlie! As we bring the family's trees home in our car their scent is the first gift of the Christmas season and starts everything rolling! So glad this poem brought back those memories for you and kindled the Christmas spirit in you. Hope you are doing well. Sending you more blessings!

Reads like a good contender for the contest to me. Way to go. We used to go cut a tree on a Christmas tree farm, but they did not grow back. I bought two live trees this year in a bucket in soil so we can set them out. Thanks for sharing this one and for dropping by my page. Sara

Your beautiful poem brought back happy memories, Sam. There's nothing like a fragrant, live Christmas tree for decorating. It's so nice that the original trees weren't destroyed in the process. Best of wishes for the contest, with this heartwarming entry. :)
