A Gift In Evergreen
A Gift in Evergreen Each year we climb the narrow road Through cedar, pine and redwood Until it pokes its hatless head In the fog washed air to breath The perfume of the crest. A special day dawns for us, A family day to share, Watching a frisky winter sun Lay quilts of sunbeams on the hills And harvest treasures of the season. We come, again, to find A living symbol, ornament, Of God’s handiwork to decorate With lights and bells and stars, Reminder of a star so long ago. Eagerly we stride through fields of grass And stands of evergreens that smell So sweetly pungent and so fresh Their perfumed dews reach up To crown our heads with fragrant wreaths. The trees in welcome fluff their boughs Stretching up into heaven’s blue Then reach again expanding in their joy To remember the divine birth Within the memories of Christmas present. Our time, now gone, we bring with us A friend – tall and straight and green – To wear the twinkling treasures of the holidays, A mountain gift of peace For all who see Nativity in evergreen. High above the freeway city, Between the winter and Yuletide, We give to one another gifts Of time and laughter Paused to welcome Christmas come. 11-29-22 Contest: Write a Christmas Poem Sponsor: Constance La France We have gone Christmas tree hunting every year as a family from the time our oldest was a year old. I felt a whole lot better about cutting down our tree knowing we were only topping a tree, leaving several whirls of branches at the base to grow into a new tree. Over the years we have seen these tiny whirls grow into beautiful new Christmas trees - truly life renewed.
