Feel free to call me an ostrich not because I'm an omnivore We recognize the story of the ostrich that sticks its head in the sand when something happens - something we don't wish to acknowledge or look in the eyes Pathos and ethos in a deeper dimension It's easier to look down on your own shoes, than to look up and look out Listen to my thoughts, unfiltered Can we find peace in this time of year when the branches are exposed to wind and cold - screams in a clear and distinct voice Have eyes for the beauty of the rain and withered leaves Follow the scents as a blood dog taste the fruits of autumn with a pale mouth "Light in the dark" is a fine expression, even if it is worn out A colorful clown without laughter heady phase of confidence and views - straight in the back to the last The air tastes of cool iron and salt when the sea shows muscles Life's canvas on an easel hold your senses on alert A time to identify that which was lost - rest in the warmth of the past as the wrinkles in my grandmother's fair face

A touching and personal view of Autumn in your poetry, Anne-Lise. The scope of your thoughts on Autumn is illuminating. This is the time of year here in Texas, that we can get outside and enjoy nature and the temperature. After a scorching Summer it is a great time of relief. This is a good entry for the contest. Good luck! Have a great week, my friend. Bill

- "A scorching summer" ... we never have that in Norway, Bill ... this year we had a miserable summer ... autumn is "our last chance" before a long and dark winter ... and autumn has been much better than the summer ... and beautiful ... I enjoy every day ... the temperature a not high ... but the sun is shining :) - Many thanks for your comment :) - hugs

Enjoyed your poem and all its thoughts about Autumn. It's great that a poet can reflect in words, and we can join along in the reading with our own reflections.

- My poems are not always about my feelings ... an alternative /different from the usual or conventional, David - Many thanks for your comment :) - hugs

" hold your senses on alert A time to identify that which was lost - rest in the warmth of the past as the wrinkles in my grandmother's fair face" -- keeping faith or hope is not always easy...but it is better than the alternative. If one does not keep head erect, eyes focused outward, no need for the sun to rise nor the moon bare her loving charm -- life stops having meaning. Let the joy of the past be a roadmap for a bright again future, no matter the dire present.

- Autumn is not my favorite time, Joe... but, I enjoy the beauty of the colors... summer is short (and often wet and cold)... autumn is our last chance before winter comes :) - Many thanks for your lovely response :) - hugs

Wrinkles on your grandmother's face were well-earned through the many autumns spent where the limbs are exposed as are your thoughts and insights, for life as autumn can be cold and rainy yet beautiful if one takes the time to look and not bury their head in the sand

A stunning piece Anne . I love the season myself. Such wonderful colours. You've taken your poetic words to a different dimension though. Material to ponder, which I love. Just beautiful. Love and hugs

This is quite a different take on the subject. Autumn is not that colorful in our life as it is in Nature. In life, it is 'like a cilorful clown without laughter.' It is the time to rest in the warmth of the past. So rightly said. A poem of true substance. Sending love on your way dear Anne.

what a powerful poem, Anne-Lisa! So many great lines. The last one, rest in the warmth of the past as the wrinkles in my fair grandmother's face....beautiful. Autumn does seem to be a time of slowing down and reflection. You've captured that feeling eloquently

Dear poetess, "taste the fruits of autumn with a pale mouth", and "A colorful clown with out laughter", may I have the audacity to ask for a brief explanation, especially the colorful clown with out laughter reference? It's so emotive and visual. I liked the ending about resting in the warmth of the past and the metaphors.

- Many feel autumn as a sad season, Nancy ... although it is beautiful in its colors .... but difficult to find joy in the death of nature ... the clown is colorful ... and will try to evoke a smile ... this clown is just sad… :( - hugs
