Sweet Summer

To thrushes’ serenade at blush of dawn and with the blooming of magnolia trees, sweet Summer wills the sun to smile upon the meadow flowers scenting morning’s breeze. Sometimes she’s mellow; other times she’s bold. She’ll sizzle, yet she’ll soothe with wind’s embrace. She’s strawberries, fireflies and marigold. In azure skies, she plants a rainbows’ grace. Then drawn-out days at last come to an end. Persimmon sunsets disappear from sight when shadows creep and into darkness blend, but her bright stars can light the blackest night. I still recall how all my cares were flung when she came. Oh, to be once more so young!

Oh, the summers of our youth...I loved them. There was always work the farm, but even that was made better with summer breezes, blue skies, and the warmth of the summer sun. This poem brought back some wonderful memories that I should visit more often as they, like this poem, always make me smile. Thank you for sharing Andrea, excellent work! Ron

Your sonnet beautifully captures the essence of summer with vivid imagery and a tender emotional undercurrent. The poet’s use of nature—thrushes, magnolias, strawberries, and sunsets—evokes a sensory richness that’s both nostalgic and enchanting. Its graceful rhythm and poignant final couplet leave a lasting impression of wistful longing for the carefree days of youth.

"She’s strawberries, fireflies and marigold." -- love those images. "I still recall how all my cares were flung when she came. Oh, to be once more so young!" -- Indeed, I miss young...when all were exciting and beckoning. Miss the mystery most of all...not knowing so much.
