Contest Description

What to Submit?

Please read the directions.

1 original, rhyming poem, dated 10/11/17 or newer on the theme of Nature's Simplest Animals and Lessons For Humanity.

Sonnet With a Twist

Please use the normal sonnet rhyming scheme ABAB CDCD EFEF GG with 10 syllables per line (The syllable counter on poetry soup will be used).

Use ABAB CDCD EFEF to describe a scene in nature.

Use GG to deliver your lesson to humanity.

There will be no bonuses for iambic pentameter.

I am realtively new to poetry and hope everyone can participate and have fun without being horrified that I might suggest a twist on the revered sonnet.  I hope that my Sonnet with a Twist doesn't offend anyone.  For the sake of those that might be offended, please choose the form Rhyme or Sonnet depending on which form you have written.

A humble example of what I am looking for can be found in my poem "Why Do We Keep Killing Eachother" where I describe a scene I experienced last night and how it conflcts with the worldly scenes of the past two weeks and a lesson that can be learned.

https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/why_do_we_keep_killing_each_other_948782

In the case of my example, I chose Rhyme because GG doesn't solve the scene depicted in ABAB CDCD EFEF.  Instead ABAB CDCD EFEF gives a lesson to humanity.

The best poem will be the one that most accurately describes a scene true to nature's Wild Kingdom (Yes, for those of you old enough to remember, that is a Marlin Perkins pun) and the parrelelling lesson delivered to us as humans while adhering to the rhyming scheme and syllable count.  While we often consider ourselves King of the jungle, we have become prideful in our self labeled title.
