*Complete contest instructions are in the bold type*
In a society that applauds self esteem and preaches self confidence and self love, too often it is only encouraged because we think it's the right thing to say. In my experience, when a person does exhibit these qualities, they are maligned and whispered about behind a cupped hand.
“ She posts a lot of selfies…she is beautiful buuut…she knows it…if you know what i mean.” Wink wink.
Or “Sure, he's super good at basketball buuut… he's too cocky about it”...etc…
In my opinion, self esteem is healthy and one can still remain humble if we keep in mind that everyone deserves applause sometimes. As a mother, I try to praise my daughter's accomplishments, personality, and intellect more often than her appearance. Still, I hope to instill in her a love of self that includes being comfortable within her own body.
*With this in mind, I'd like you to ask someone close to you, a loved one, to tell you 3 of your best qualities. Write an Ode Poem about yourself that includes these 3 qualities and only explore your positive attributes… Between 10 and 30 lines. You can write it from any perspective you wish, as yourself or as if you're writing about someone else(she/he, him/her rather than I / me or vice versa.)
I realize this isn't an easy assignment to do! Most of us feel awful if we “sing our own praises”, as they say. However, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, according to the Scriptures…and made in the image and likeness of God.
We remain humble when we acknowledge our good points while giving the credit where credit is due. Our Creator, or the god of your understanding, our parents and ancestors, the education we've received, teachers and mentors who have molded us. Just remember, we each also have to work hard and apply those lessons to our lives.
I hope you enjoy this writing prompt and Contest but mostly I hope that by the end of it, you will see yourself in a new light and be proud of yourselves! As well as being aware of how you perceive others who exhibit self confidence. Xoxo, Crystol
