How to build a better world with MARGARET ATWOOD

Blog Posted by Arthur Vaso: 4/22/2017 10:32:00 PM

I will be posting a link to a video of which this poem is based, please have a look!

Atwoods Poetry

This is about what really works in the world, encouragement, positive re-enforcement, searching for solutions instead of seeking what’s wrong. Building, comforting, and bringing people together. That poetry inspires any part of this process, what a joy that is. Always look to those who build, create and till, you will find greatness and always such goodwill.

I know my poem is not good, but the idea that inspired it is my goal!

Poetic Rejoice

Musical notes become antidotes

Teachers become motivators of youthful hope

Symphonies become beacons from negative yoke

Musical notes dancing with poetic spoke

Wheels in the mind start yearning and turning

With praise and hope and endearments true

Reciting dreams and reciting creative desires

Making his peers expose their joyous tears

Running to better places

Knowing glory is in the effort of all smiling faces

Now hear is a young man, with goals afloat

Ignored those who tried to sink his boat

Glory sings when you see kindness ring

Not when you see little ones pretend a sting

His peers where drowned with happiness tears

Youth has its wisdom as teachers smiled in the rear

Triumph and victory all held dear

The boy was reciting a poem by Margaret Atwood a famous Canadian poet like me!

The Moment

The moment when, after many years
of hard work and a long voyage
you stand in the centre of your room,
house, half-acre, square mile, island, country,
knowing at last how you got there,
and say, I own this,

is the same moment when the trees unloose
their soft arms from around you,
the birds take back their language,
the cliffs fissure and collapse,
the air moves back from you like a wave
and you can't breathe.

No, they whisper. You own nothing.
You were a visitor, time after time
climbing the hill, planting the flag, proclaiming.
We never belonged to you.
You never found us.
It was always the other way round.

Margaret is a pure poet unlike those who rattle the can full of shekels claiming to be famous.

Found this famous quote "No one chooses to be winner or loser, nor first or last, so who then would choose to be second? Other than the worm?"

I'm laughing at the "famous Canadian" bit.... I'm ALMOST famous Arthur. You say you know the poem is not good. Famous and modest too? Seriously, your poem is as inspirational as was the courage shown in that clip. We were all moved at his efforts because speech is so vital a tool of communication. We willed him on. It's just so nice that one so gifted with words as you are would take the time to shine a spotlight on such a noble struggle. Thank you.

I really liked this video, ARthur, In fact, I listened all the way to the end (not always usual for me). It brought a tear to my eye that he had such compassionate teachers and school mates!

My pleasure Arthur. When you showed me the link yesterday I was so emotional as it resonates so much with me with the kids I worked with and I did see the original programme. I thought I would try and find more info for you about 'what happened next' what an inspirational young man!:-) hugs Jan xx

If that doesn't bring you to tears you don't have a heart...Simply beautiful...The spirit of man can be remarkable. We all have our own obsticles in life and with a little support we can possibly overcome them....Thank you Arthur

Tim I've cried buckets over that video and a moving poem that Darren White wrote. As soon as I saw the clip I was in tears as I'd watched the original TV programme which was called 'Educating Essex' and having worked with students who had language difficulties it has a profound effect on me:-) hugs Jan xx

This poem is great, both yours and Atwoods, the reason you posted it is even better. Treating people in a positive way, instead of punishing them. Building them up instead of tearing them down. That message is so important. Thank you.
