How old is too old to trick or treat?

Blog Posted by Natalie The Rogue Rhymer: 10/31/2011 10:46:00 PM
Happy Haloween!

So, I bought tons of candy and but we still ran out.  We had so many...I would say 100 or more (in the small town I used to live I had about four each year so I would have tons of candy left over and eat it-bad!).

The kids were really polite and seemed grateful which was nice.  But how old is too old?  We had tons of kids that looked like they were in college (18-19+).  I think that is too old but what the heck do I know?

What do you guys think...how old is too old?

To answer your question. When your rheumatism is acting up so bad you can't walk. Going old is inevitable, remaining a kid is optionable. Agape, Moses

I think Joyce has something. As long as it is still fun to trick or treat, do it. I don't care how old the kids are. They all get the same candy. We didn't have any trick or treaters this year, but I used to see some "older" ones when I lived in Tallahassee. They were always polite and I welcomed them just as I would have any young child. I think I stopped trick or treating when I went to high school. Love, Carolyn

James-That is so sweet. I was nice to all of them...I kinda felt bad for them in a way b/c I was always at some fun party when I was their age...but next year I will think of them holding on to their youth...and I will even be nicer and of course, not judge. Thank you kindly!

Natalie, the way I see it...the older teens still trick or treating (15/16yr. old) most likely are (without realizing) holding on to their last vestiges of youth....geez, who can blame them, with all that is ahead! I smile, understand and don't judge ... jimbo

I think 90 would be a good age to stop but then again how many people hand out Bran muffins. I believe my last year I was a sophomore in High School. When I was a kid you could go door to door without worrying about the psychos they have out there now. We went unchaperoned from about 8 years old until we were around 16. I had 4 younger brothers. Most of the time we went with our friends from our own grade in school.

I once lived in Woodstock, Ontario, population 27,000. At seventeen, I went trick or treating, BUT I went with kids that only visited our friends homes and the homes of our teachers and THE PRINCIPAL. Just for fun and frollick. It was a hoot and a Halloween I never forgot. We'd knock on the teacher's doors and say, "Forget the treats, we'd like an A+ please." Still makes me smile. That being said I did not like giving out EXPENSIVE candy to 18 year olds when I owned a house. Some didnt even bother with a costume and were using a pillowcase as a grab bag. Some were so full they could barely haul the thing. Cheesed me off. My rule was NO COSTUME, NO TREAT... one guy said to me, "You're joking, right?" I said, "Nope. If you're too lazy to slap on some lipstick or put on bunny ears, then I'm too lazy to hand you a lollipop." I was lucky my car didn't get egged. ;-) Cyndi

I would love to go trick-or-treating if there were some kids around. My son is a young man now but if he were up to even now I would go. It depends how young you feel at heart. At least, here, where we both live, grown-ups have Halloween parties where they behave so childish...I have been to some of them and ...boy!!!

I think when the kids hit 12 or 13 that should really be the end of trick or treating, at that age they are usually going to parties or school functions. At the local shopping malls they have free trick or treating for little ones up to the age of 12 and that has always seemed reasonable to me.
