Continued.. Another source of creativity is the need to solve problems, i.e. higher level thinking skills. So does the American Dream foster or discourage creativity? To the degree that the AD values financial success, it's probably true that it directs creative individuals to find creative ways to make lots of money rather than pursuing more aesthetic careers. Witness the creativity in the banking industry that created the conditions that caused the Great Recession. Personally, I'd rather our smartest people apply their creative talents elsewhere.

Let's analyze this question... Creativity is a attribute of a person, not something which exists on its own, except as an abstract concept. The American Dream is a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility achieved through hard work. It is not necessarily capitalism, and it is arguable that it is true in the sense that it can be achieved through hard work. In any case the comparison is "apples and oranges" as they say. In my opinion, much creativity is born from internal conflict, which seeks an acceptable social outlet, hence social systems which produce more internal conflict might have more creative people.

Capitalism is selfish...pure and simple....sure...MANY acts of philanthropy and selfless kindness overcome....but behind American eyes.....we have one true god.....$$$$$...our leaders model this!....do you see a dept. of peace? No....peace is not profitable (in our interest)...jimbo

An interesting question Christine, though I'm not sure what you mean by creative. Do you mean creative in ways of making money? Or creative in new inventions? Or the arts? Or something else?

I do not think that the American Dream and the arts go hand in hand as far as most would view what the American Dream is. Appreciation and understanding of art needs to be taught, preferably at an early age where they can be encouraged to become creative in these fields. Too little interest and facility from above is not helping.

The dream is being destroyed from within, by people and/or groups manipulating individuals thoughts and actions, while limiting their imagination. Example, Estimating 150 million employed X $25 per wk saved = 3.75 billion dollars, 3.75 billion is given to banks and/or individuals to scheme and speculate with in the worlds economy. This way of thinking is promoted by media, government, employers, bakers, religious groups and the majority of people don't question why do governments limit the rights of individuals to own, precious metals, ores and gems? Could it be that they don't want to lose their 3.75 billion dollar weekly funding. by individuals not using paper money? Imagination!

I'm Canadian. I am thinking what you mean is ... that when you have everything, when there is nothing left to dream about because every convenience, every dishwashing-remotecontrolled-luxurycar-vacationinthehamptons- thing is there, when there is no struggle, no hill left to climb and life becomes TOO EASY, then does that make the mind lazy, the heart sluggish, does imagination and inspiration EVAPORATE as you sit and watch a television that takes over an entire wall? Yup! I get that! There's a quote, oh crap, alexander alexander... OH YES! I REMEMBER! When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer! I do not pursue THAT dream ;-)

I have a dream. My daughter. A long long long road to get to her, so many bumps, and this dream come true inspires me. Many of poems are born of her, my love for her... dreams can make us and dreams can break us, I guess
