New PoetrySoup Features....

Two new PoetrySoup features are right around the corner. The first feature is a "follow poet" feature that allows you to see all of the most-recent poems of the poets that you follow in one interface or page. You can see the beginnings of this feature in the left navigation under the Member Area heading.

Poets I Follow

The second feature is Premier Poetry Contests. These are contests that Premium Members can sponsor that adhere to certain contest rules. More about the benefits of these types of contests will be posted soon once the feature is up; hopefully by Monday. Yes, Monday (4/25/)!!!

By the end of August, we will have more dynamic features and a much better PoetrySoup community. There is no resting on our laurels here. The upcoming months should be very exciting for the PoetrySoup community.

I dnt know if it would ever be possible to have an area for adults poetry 16 plus or 18;plus where soupers who wish to write some sizzling poetry will be able to that without any trouble. My sizzling days have left me..but I know there are others who would love to write without being concerned of being censored..Its just an idea...Im sorry if I sound greedy .I do appreciate what you did and still do for this site .I know you work hard.Thanks Tps <3

Yes Dormant is better , and guess Id rather stay that way for a while : ). My idea was to avoid this reporting eacother thing. If there was an adult area with a code or something, maybe we could post stuff which we believe are not ideal for eight yr old kids, or maybe if there was a kid area on soup, that would be lovely too.Its not only sensual poetry that might not be good for kids, there are poems about violence, rape , suicide that might sound worse. So what, not writing about these too ?I know we can write about such things here, I do at times, so why is sensuality worse than violence. Anyways what I dont like my kid to see on ps is when friends here fight like cats and dogs..I hate that..So what then? Anyways it was just my idea but Id rather be Dormant or Death, cuz I guess it was a mushroom me hat idea, so ignore : ).

I know my limits here Tim..But again maybe my limits are not your limits..and hers and his..So again..there is always gonna be a problem where the line is..I am bit on the old fashioned side. Yet believe not to impone what I believe on others..This is not about asking permission from you if the word im posting is to alluring or not...What might be offensive for me might be mild to moderate for you...Anyways its getting out of point..All I asked was if it was possible to have an area where one can write poetry that somehow gets censored here..or not acceptable because of little children ecc...Again I said write..Not posting rubbish...Or making a porn site out of this site..Anyways.i end it here

Yes Tim..who wants to read about Tits or harry or fritz...will not be on ps I believe.Yet still there are children and students who use this site as Cyndi said ..So we dnt want to scare them away.. When i first joined ps I didnt know about this children friendly thing..somehow I thought its a site for adults..but once we know ofcourse.. We are very careful..But thats why I thought of this idea...But anyways.. Not goo d :)

Yes something like that..Maybe it would solve problems for some who after they post a poem it gets reported..or deleted..and then one feel offended..and then one would feel that A's 0r P's poem was more explicit more or less than his/hers....The other party might feel offended if he reports and the poem is still there..Guess it would solve a big headache for ps..too...But it was just an idea..so maybe we make everyone happier...But forget it...I love ps as it is. So i dnt knw why I even tried to suggest it.My intention was agood one ofcourse...But anyways I still love this site and think its the best.

But if they wanted to read about suicide, or horror, or gore, even tits they will be able to find it on the web. So your idea is good. If someone wants to find it they will. We can be proactive here and self rate our poetry.

CHARMAINE! EXACTLY. I grew up in Quebec -- the most 'European-like" area of Canada... I get what you're saying! They allow 13 year olds to witness highly violent scenes here. But a 17 year old can't see a couple make love on the moviescreen? TWISTED! To me. Yet common beliefs AROUND me.

That is why if there was a section for just that noone would be offended Tim..Cuz you know you re gonna read just that..abit of spice..a bit of suicide..a bit of horror...etc... But then again where will one draw the line..I prefer for my daughter to see the words tits..then to read about suicide in her teens..But then again..where is the line?So maybe my idea isnt good ..No prob :)

No, I mentioned nudity because I once put up a classic masterpiece by Frida Kahlo but because the painting showed a topless Frida it had to be removed.. sad, but the way it is...

Yes..that is another thing Cyndi.I dont let my girl watch nude scenes.but what I dont let her watch most of all is scenes such as Isil cutting heads..Those are even worse..but my point was about normal poetry which is a bit daring..not dirty..Just daring that might not be allowed here.Anyways it was just a suggestion...:)

Good thoughts Cyndi. As a mother you start thinking what is appropriate for your children and those of similar age. Yes sometimes we can get hindered by not being able to use a certain word because we think it might be inappropriate for this site.

I think the one thing that has somewhat miffed me is that only sensual poetry or profanity is deemed "adult." Not that I am asking for MORE censorship (plug your ears TPS.) what I'm saying is that in today's world poetry on war, killings, tragedies, natural disasters where thousands die, terrorism, all of it, IS child friendly? I get 15+ but what about 8+?

Still, even though I am not big on profanity being used in Poetry, I do feel that there are times when only one specific word will fit into a poem because sometimes real life has less than proper language.

There are actually lesson plans (PDF) that teachers can download. THIS explains why students have asked to use our poetry (I've been asked and I've been used!) It is "SCHOOL FRIENDLY"

And bet it would be another hard piece of work for tps...Bp. I remember the first time I ve posted my Pasionata poem.I posted a line where it says 'inner of my thigh'...Then I kept thinking ..about the kids stuff etc..and changed it to 'inner of my sigh'.So you know what I mean..I didnt leave it exactly how I wished...If there was that area .I would have left it that way...Im not talking about dirty poetry..but just normal adult poetry...But anyways..guess tps have more than enough on their plate..So maybe in future years.Who knows..Im still grateful for many things they did in these past seven yrs I ve been here.They did a lot .

In fact, did you know the site ACTUALLY has teacher resources they can print off? I think I found it under "resources" on the blue menu bar at the top? Once, I didn't understand -- TPS once told me more students use Soup than adults. I didn't get it, then. Now? I get it!

Charmaine. I get it, even thought the same thing...but what confuses me about Soupers is that many equate POSTING poetry with WRITING poetry. People can write anything! They can be members of many sites and post those elsewhere...But I do understand your idea!

This site currently lists as "child safe" with certain watchdogs. This means many things. Parents who check feel more apt to let students use the site. Teachers freely use the resources (without too much worry) and the rating pays (like AdSense who expects things like no nudity (even classic nude paintings!))

I think teens with sex on their mind wont be exploring the poetrysoup adult site if it happens though..Guess they ll be in other places searching worse stuff:) :).. Im not referring for a mature area for dirty stuff..but for just sensual normal stuff that gets reported too.. That way less people will be offended..and less people will be reported..It works good for both..But maybe Its a silly ideA after all.

It is a good idea Charma but the only downfall is the kids would gravitate to that 18 plus area. They are much smarter than us when it comes to computers and would have no problem bypassing any safe guards.

It's good to have new features to improve the site but I would love to see the 'jumping' comments fixed and also be able to see soup mails that I have sent to other people - that to me would really improve the site.

I concur with Keith's audio feature suggestion below.As some here are aware I recite some of my PS anthology on youtube under my pen name ichthyschiro.Perhaps ,in view of numbers and space involved it could be a short poem to give a taster of accent and inflection.Anyway As I said in your earlier blog PS(see below)you are no 1 poetry site on the net, with a considerate and amenable approach to we kindred types who congregate here on your invaluable part of the world wide poetry resources.

Hi TPS: My idea is not for me, but for those new to Soup. I was wondering if its possible to create a very short video .. ?... maybe 2 minutes that teaches new members how to use the features. A little tour of their souppages like this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DthBJhBrYs Obviously you cannot cover all the resources. I'm guessing it would take you quite some time to produce/put together. It's not that your site is difficult to navigate, but it does take a bit of time to learn the ropes...

Tps, you said we can edit the poets I follow list. By editing that list, we are removing our favorite poets. I'd like to edit my poets to follow list without removing my favorite poets. I have lots of poets I'd like to follow who are not my favorite poets. One poem per poet, makes more sense. Really! Why have something we can view on the new poem list. I dropped by Daver's poem, left him a comment. And guess what? His poem is still on the follow list. You'd at least think, his poem would bump off after commenting his poem. That way someone else might have a chance of being on the list. Maybe something that needs a little fixing. ; )

Sorry, but I won't be using the first new feature. My comments go right back to whoever is writing me from the comments list. Also I have three long pages of poets I have faved and followed. I have no time for that!! It is great that you are doing the Premier contests soon. Way to go!! By the way, I only recently discovered that I can find favorite poems of my individual poet friends by clicking on their names to bring up all the poems that I have faved of theirs. I can't believe I never knew this before . It would have saved me so much time tracking down their poems. hahaha!

I went to FAVE POEMS and clicked on poet's name. That way I can see how many poems I have ever faved IN ALPHABETICAL order by name. I can count how many poems I faved from each and every poet!!! AHA< I know how I can find your identity now. I will go see what comes up for YOU

PD and TPS: I have no idea what is involved in this (I can see TPS shuddering now, thinking, what next?!) but is there a way when you first join, fill out the new member page, that at the very least, that your terms and conditions box leaps up and the new member must sign off that they have read and agree to those terms? It will probably do little for PD's concerns and I'm not certain it will make that big a difference for profanity, but maybe some of the newcomers really don't know what is acceptable. Also, cool would be some kind of youtube introduction to Soup...uh?...like a video-ed screen shot? (if that makes sense) of all the features to help newbies? Do you understand what I mean?

LoL, CM..try following them more often as I do. try Christopher caleb, a lot of the fake accounts have been removed. Thanks to jan, myself and annlise. Sometimes reporting work. Administration did good on removing a certain pest with multiple fake accounts. But, who knows who is the true force behind that person.

I remember my early days, reading a warm note and feeling so special, so liked... and then I clicked on other poems and realized it wasn't for "me," it was the same message over and over... I literally deflated. Childish, I know... but I felt so foolish, believing someone wrote something just for me... I remember turning away from soup for some time... I felt like an idiot.

PD--Stolen poems.. very awful! And obviously intentional. The IP block would be helpful! I'm going to go check out some of this new traffic. I used to check them out weekly. Is there a way to be welcoming and strict? I think some newbies may feel lost ... I was. How to 'manoeuver' through soup... first week, bumpy?

They need to add a rule for those creating new accounts. Warning every new poet, if they aren't active at least one month after they join, their account will not be valid. (count) If poetry soup was to be a little strict with the new poets, we would have a healthy community. With legit traffic. Because, if these poets are serious about joining they would stick around longer than a day. I've seen several post that are not even poems. Two words, one word "poop" for example. The same line over and over. LoL... Come on, something needs to be done.

Block IP address. We had a thief days ago. She had 3 fake accounts in one day. Posting my poems, Annalise and Catie's. Sadly, Annalise got the most damage, she took them elsewhere. (Thanks God, TPS, removed the accounts.) It was horrible Cyndi... He/she kept coming back. (hopefully soup blocked that ip address) even if they did, they will find their way back. Admin, I'm looking forward to the better community. Does that mean you are cleaning space. Filtering the new poet list, which has been compromised by countless fake accounts. Yesterday, someone made a fake account and only offered the word "poop." Stuff like that makes this site a joke. Two days ago we had a fake account, plagiarizing poems. (Thank you for getting rid of it) But, they keep coming back, creating other fake accounts. Also, someone took a famous therapist name and is using it here with her avatar. I contacted Christe, on her site and she said she's never heard of poetry soup. I gave her the link in hopes she contacts the fake account, and ask them to stop using her name.

Please poetry soup, it's getting harder to welcome the new poets, in which I enjoy doing. Please find a way in adding additional rules, for the new poets as well. They create new account just to post "nothing at times" and never come back. Believe me, they are easy to identify. I like what we have going on here. I think by filtering these new accounts, you'll get rid of all the fake accounts.

I don't like the "poets I follow" feature. I wouldn't bother using, unless you show one poem from each poet "I really follow." I don't mind seeing one poem, but that's ridiculous, I had 6 poems from one poet, and 5 from another. I can't even see the real poets I follow. That list has poets from my favorite list, who appear to be the most active by showing their recent poems. I don't like that more than one poem takes up that space. In other words, I'd like to see poems from the poets I REALLY follow. Giving many more poets to appear on that feature... pd

I can see how that would be a problem. You follow a lot of people. We thought about the one poem per poet followed. Still ironing this out…
