Kim Rodrigues Biography

Welcome to my bio! I love poetry, of course, and enjoy interacting with other Soupers. I am originally from Upstate New York, travelled with the U.S. Navy and ended up in the Southern United States.

Be careful

a late observation....isn't "yesteryear" just an accumulation of "yesterdays"....

That being said, I can empathize with you Kim. I don’t like being copied. Several decades ago, a person, who shall remain nameless, made a habit of shamelessly copying my drawing – age-appropriately immature drawing of things like ducks wearing beards or sideburns. I was seething. I confided in an older person, who shall remain nameless, who attempted (unsuccessfully) to console me by saying “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. Come to think of it, I can’t think of any instances, after about 1967 that anybody has copied me. That must mean I’m writing junk. Now, I kind of wish someone would copy me.

@Richard D Seal: I agree. Many a time a poet would get it spectacular wrong, and the fan club would follow suit - totally ignoring the sponsor's brief and/or examples. Many N/A's follow and then people wonder why ... The sponsors are not supposed to read it beforehand, but they have always done so.

One word, that's pretty funny. Maybe that person should write to the dictionary people and say that they have no business defining that word because after all it's his word.

Kim. Someone got mad about you using yesteryear?? Give me a break.

Kim, Poets being able to read contest entries before the contest is closed has always been a problem and in my opinion ruins the whole idea of the contests.

Yesteryear is common in poetry and prose.

No, you write very well. I enjoy! I once had someone mad with me because I used the word “yesteryear” on a poetry site FB. I did not get it from her poem. One word…lol. I could see why she might think so but I found it petty. Didn’t make a big deal out of it, though. I grew up in a time where that word was used. Like I said, sometimes it is just a coincidence. I just have seen it off too many poems lately and especially the same contest. Us poets will just keep muddling through. So sorry for anyone who has had unique lines and whole poems stolen…that is not usually a flattery but copyright issue. Glad we’ve all added a snippet to the conversation. Good people here!

Somehow, in life, I acquired a neurotic guilty conscience, and I suppose that's why I'm commenting. I don't use AI, but I'm sometimes paranoid, imagining people think my poems are AI because I'm so stuck to tight rhyming forms. I need to work on loosening that up. I guess I can console myself that no one could imagine that poems as dumb as mine sometimes are, could possibly be either plagiarized or produced by AI. Unless there is some kind of dumb AI. Hey, there’s an idea for a poem (probably not original, but I can’t remember a source…oh yeah, I have a vague memory of a Gary Larson cartoon with a clumsy alien of sub-normal intelligence stumbling out of an spaceship that just landed on earth). Anyway, now that I thought of it, I’m probably going to write that poem. Am I right to think of that poem as having influences, as opposed to being plagiarized?

LOL…right, David! I am like you. I have been accused of being too honest, and having gone to Catholic school through 7th grade, we produce guilt where it should not be. We all get our ideas from somewhere.
Dietrich Avatar

Don't call yourself dumb, David. I enjoy your work. I think those who intentionally plagiarize know darn well what they are doing and it is pathetic they have the need to do it and also to use AI . (We actually allowed our ESL students to use AI by giving it very specific directions, such as "correct any problems I have made with subject/verb agreement". I can tell many poets do not use AI because they have problems with subject and verb agreement , etc. It is a shame we all must go around not even knowing what is real or unreal these days, but just keep writing from your beautiful heart
Crandall Avatar
October 12, 2025 at 9:37 AM
I've certainly never intentionally plagiarized anybody, and to my knowledge, never have plagiarized anyone. Yet, many times, I've written a poem, and without knowing it, discovered later, that what I thought was a wholly original idea, was heavily influenced by some song or movie I saw (last month or four decades ago), so I wonder if that could also happen with someone's poem. Also, sometimes, I read someone else's poem, or comment, or see a news story, and it triggers an idea, so that poem is an influence, but I'm not copying it. Anyhow, if I've ever subconsciously copied anyone's stuff, bring it to my attention.

Suzette, I thank you, I feel comforted and I'm letting it go. You helped with that, you, too, Andrea. And, David, your writes are all David-unique, stop the doubts, no David-doubts allowed!! CayCay

Hmm, it's actually pretty interesting...a machine trying to write poetry - something that once must have been pretty hard to envision.
Richards Avatar
October 13, 2025 at 7:44 AM
David, it varies. AI is good at Limericks, sonnets, Pantoum, Villanelle, all the old rhyming forms. Also haiku, tanka, etc. It falls flat with Triolette, etc where nuance is called for and some poetic devices. So, it depends on the topic and/or form. Some use AI to assist, but some are just plain lazy and copy and paste, i.e. THEY don't understand the brief and don't or can't correct the obvious errors, eg incorrect syllable counts, a metaphor left dangling in thin space, incongruous line breaks, etc. My stance is: If you like it, so what?
Crandall Avatar
October 13, 2025 at 6:53 AM
Andrea, Kim - makes sense! CayCay, sounds like that AI checker is a knucklehead AI. Suzette, I'm glad I'm not judging contests, but I'm curious how many AI entries come in. Almost all of what I read sounds like it comes from a real person.
Richards Avatar
October 12, 2025 at 11:09 PM
@CayCay. Don't worry about it. AI is trained on a large data base, including dictionaries. It relies on rote learning to respond and does not reason. That is why, for example, a sonnet will sound like a load of baloney as it invariably gets its facts mixed up - anyone with an ounce of common sense and a bit of general knowledge can see a fake a mile off. Forget the checkers - it is just outsourcing one's intelligence to catch the ones outsourcing their creativity. :-)
Dietrich Avatar
October 12, 2025 at 9:54 PM
Caycay. There is some site that invariably will say you are AI. I forgot which one. I am at the point where I don't give a dang. I will compete against AI poems here if I have to. It's not like we really know what us up and what is down any more.
Godwin Avatar
October 12, 2025 at 12:59 PM
I'm very concerned. VERY because out of curiosity I checked three of my poems in an AI checker, and all three came up over 50% AI which I shouldn't even have to say ISN'T TRUE. Has anyone else tried and received same concerning results? Maybe it was just the site I used, I don't know, I don't want to do it again.

We are all influenced by so many things. By movies, books, our traditions, our friends and their poetry as well. We just need to always be true to ourselves and write authentically from our own hearts
Lawless Avatar
October 12, 2025 at 7:03 AM
I, a truly Lawless poet must confess...I am guilty...of being inspired and emboldened by reading the poems of "others" (too numerous to be mentioned here) to pursue the "implications" of a word or phrase in their poem. I once used all the Contest titles to construct a poem. I have often said that "it is the nature of the poet to provoke, not to explain" leaving the interpretation and implications of my writings in the heads and hearts of the readers. People may steal my words but they will never know the joy and passion and inspiration that gave them life.

October 12, 2025 at 11:27 AM
I agree with you, Suzette! There is a certain ideas that we share with one another. I have seen some put the same unique idea I just put in a contest into their poem. Could have been coincidence but seems to happen often. Not necessarily the same person. I have not tracked this, at this point. I suppose the point of my blog is for people to be sensible and sensitive as they write. Sometimes it is obvious that we are going off someone else’s to add our thoughts or whatever. I love the thoughts you have added in your comment. I know we need to have some grace. hugs
Richards Avatar
October 11, 2025 at 9:57 PM
I get it as well, Paige. I thought that it was the whole idea of this site: To inspire others - be it a poem triggered by this blog, a contest idea that flows from my poem or one of the other poets' poems. One of your poems had led to a contest a few months ago. :) A kind of cross pollination. But as discussed: We need to be original in our text ...

I recently posted "Vinland" Senryu. I used “Vikings row the boat ashore” from Peter Paul & Mary's "Michael Row The Boat Ashore" which itself was originally a “Negro” Spiritual. It is a fit, for History purposes regarding Columbus Day. Everyone would recognize the play on words & I was not trying to steal it. Not an "intent" to deceive. xXHugs

You make perfect sense about stuff in public domain. But I think some of us are thinking of really incredible poetic lines that do not come immediately to our minds. Maybe from obscure poetry and plagiarized very cleverly,?? And about certain cultures that plagiarize, as ESL teachers, we did always try to teach them things were not to be done that way in American universities

At the end of your poem, you might cite the author - this is considered as ‘fair use’. However, it is not necessary to acknowledge the author’s copyright where it is a well-known quote, for example: ‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.’ ~ Quote from Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. You may even quote only part of the well-known line. But in the case of Wilde's quote - I like the complete one as it says it better. Your "Vikings" could hardly be seen as plagiarism, unless you are using it in a song and set to the music of the song by PP & M. But titles alone are not subject to copyright ;-)

Public Domain Definition—The state of belonging or being available to the public as a whole, especially through not being subject to copyright or other legal restrictions: If it’s in the public domain and are not infringing on anyone’s copyright & have become common expressions in the public domain its not plagiarism. Hey ‘once in a blue moon’ I go to Hawaii is an example.

i discovered my 'rape' poem on somebody else's website with her name under it as if she'd written it herself, and on here a poet wrote a poem using the lines from my 'undergrowth with two figures' poem..the way i see it, unless you're prepared to take someone to court, there's very little you can do about plagiarism

@Tom. Quote by Oscar Wilde (1854–1900): ‘Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.’ But it still boils down to being plagiarism! @Andrea, you are right— some students may genuinely not see their actions as plagiarism. The tension here lies in differing cultural understandings of originality, authorship, and respect. But with guidance, most adapt quickly to new academic expectations.

For Tommy. The saying is " Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. " As an ESL teacher I learned that some Asian cultures take that saying to heart and don't even consider plagiarism such a big deal as Americans do.

It does no good to go after these robbers. I saw some of my poems stolen. I didn't mind if they referenced me as author but many didn't. I got half the websites to remove the poems not attributed to me, but others I could not get satisfaction from. Regular police cannot control our lawless land so how can we expect any help on internet?

Oh, my gosh goodness sakes. Send them to Poem Jail. Maybe we need one. I'm so glad you spoke out; let it be known that it is known and won't be accepted. Oh, my gosh. PEOPLE, come on or maybe go? Words that aren't one's own are words that only spell deceit no matter what one tells themself. It doesn't make someone a writer, it makes them a deceiver, and the saddest part is deceiving yourself the most. Love your authentic self genuinely, not like this.

I applaud your 2 months of sobriety and realize you are probably still 'tentatively perched' so I'm sending positive vibes into the universe for your continued success. I believe that like a drug, plagiarism and AI 'success' feed a puny, needy soul's "false validation addiction." These people need spiritual help because their 'good feel' fix wears off frequently, just like an addicts does. They need to find their own inner gifts, and we don't help by commenting, it encourages the 'addiction.' All in this box are my opinions, I've no need to be agreed with. I didn't want to leave your questions hanging mid-air or ignore your admirable journey towards sobriety.

Sure, this has happened. I just smile, yawn and move on. Perhaps it is because I have no agenda in as assigning authorship to poems I pen. I have often said, ‘wherefrom comes the exalted thought, that inspirations with it brought’. This said, I’d advocate each nightingale to sing his or her own unique song, celebrating life and holding erect stance of spirit within.

Since way back when, people have read (but never commented) my poetry with the clear intention to mine it for vocabulary or ideas. But the funny part is that there is an ingrained resistance when I introduce new ideas - just some and not all. There is a new type of 'theft' I have reported before where contestants and a few others use my example poems to generate AI-GENERATED poetry..This p....me off big time as people seldom check the date and time stamp and my work gets associated with AI slop. ... You did ask, Kim :)
