An Obscure Poetry Form: Ungalino

Blog Posted by Chetta Achara: 2/5/2024 8:22:00 AM
I discovered this form about thirty years ago. It was in an old reference book at my local library. As I recall the book was titled Encyclopedia of Poetic Forms.

I call the form "obscure" because I can't find it anywhere online.

I did copy those pages from the reference book. I will have to look for that in my more than cluttered storage room.

I did have the smarts to save the form structure in one of my notebooks. It is a two stanza poem, constructed as follows:

First stanza: 1/2/3/4, second stanza repeats as lines 2/4/3/1.

These are two of the poems I wrote using this form:

Between the Tick and the Tock

Between the tick and the tock
time is held in abeyance.
Marvelous things can happen
in that endless, timeless place.

Time is held in abeyance
in that endless, timeless place.
Marvelous things can happen
between the tick and the tock.

Trapped In Limbo

Trapped in limbo,
Not moving ahead
Never looking behind;
Suspended in that single moment of time.

Not moving ahead,
Suspended in that single moment of time,
Never looking behind,
Trapped in limbo.

There may be a modern form constructed in this pattern. If so, please let me know.

I like the form Chetta. As SuZ points out, the challenge is making sense of both stanzas. Pity that you cannot find the book/notes. Joy that you saved it! :)

I also enjoy the form. I am crossing my fingers that I still have that copy of information about the form.

This sounds like a real fun way to use ones imagination, while making sense of both stanzas. Thank you for sharing this with us, Chetta.
