AI generated vs human created poetry

There has been much discussion in the PS blog-o-sphere about the use of AI in creating poetry.

I do not use AI, however most of the poems I write are simple and not "esoteric." Could it be mistaken for AI generated? I don't know (and don't really care). I'm not one of the poets obsessing about AI being used in writing.

I did come across an article discussing this very issue. I found it quite interesting. You might also. (You will find a link to the article at the end of this blog.)

Heather Leigh questions whether literary genius is limited to humanity in dissecting AI poetry

An excerpt from the article:

"They’re called the humanities for a reason: our ability to create and appreciate art is a defining part of our humanhood. This sentiment implies reciprocity; human involvement defines a work of art. Yet a recent study reveals AI-generated poetry is indistinguishable and even preferable to human-authored verse. Destabilising our most fundamental definitions, this development necessitates a re-evaluation not only of what constitutes art, but also of what makes us human.

Is AI-generated poetry superseding human verse?

Hi Chetta! AI can't beat the craftsmanship of a genuine human poet...We are far better than machine generated garbage. What we can do is to never stop writing good poetry not to let AI rule this site. Stay prolific. ^___^ JCB

I read your bio, and I think it's because you publish that you're unconcerned by AI, or an accusation of it being leveled at you. I feel the same way for the same reasons. Anyone trying to get published wouldn't risk using AI anywhere that's discoverable. And it won't be long before AI's fingerprint can be extracted from the metadata-there's very little one can do online that can't be traced to its origins. It's a death knell and a short-lived scheme at best. My guess is that AI users will faction off and it will become its own art--like how digital artists are their own legit category now. But, man, the painters were hot under the collar when computers first came on the scene. Nice take.

Ahhh, that makes sense. I'm sorry you experienced trolling. And it's a shame you deleted the blog, but I understand wanting to size down your digital footprint. I just leave it hanging all out there with my full government name xD

I blogged about it being seen as a new form about a year ago, but deleted the blog. I don't keep a big footprint on the net. Oh, I'm sorry about the throwaway comment - it was a reaction to trolling I experienced and removed an earlier comment - it has put me in mind of the introduction to my last blog.

Really? I read a wide variety of poetry journals and I haven't seen it legitimized anywhere just yet - maybe that's just my sample bias though. I'll take your word for it :) I'm not getting the connection between Trolls and AI brains being united though. Can you explain what you mean, Suzette?

AI-generated poetry has been recognised as a poetry form in its own right for a very long time. It is only PS that has not yet included it as an option under poetic forms. Trolls and AI-brains have long been united. ;)
