About dates on poems

There was this blog, seems to have disappeared, stating that dates should not put on poems any more.

It's confusing.

Will the master of ceremonies please stand up and clarify what this is all about? On my part, I like to date my poems, even if PS software keeps track. What's wrong with that?

Moreover, on my page, only year of publication appears, not the exact date. Leaves the chronology of dreams that inspired misty, metaphorically speaking.

I too like to have my poems with the date and the name of the contest and sponsor in the notes section.

Won't it be more practical for TPS to include the full date when the poem is posted in line with the copyright? Regarding the contests: The full date when the poem was first posted appear at the top of each poem that you receive for reading under your contest page (as I've started before). Also stated before, your poems are dated on your page of poems. I don't see the problem.

Hi, Seeker, my blog from June 6 with the communication with PS Admin is still posted for reading and they clearly state that the rule applies to all poems not just contests. I am not sure if they would actually delete a poem because someone put a date on, but I am putting my dates in Poetry notes, as a Prem Member you can also ! And I find it looks good, I have gone so far as to put the contest details, my placement and copyright number. I feel sorry for people who are not PM's . Now, what do I do about contest sponsors who continue to ask for dates, contest, and sponsor at the bottom, just not sure as I want to enter, I want to place but don't want my poem deleted !

I can't agree with you more US, my poems are often like my 'diary' and I like to have them dated and it could also help prove copyright as at the moment it just says posted in 2023. It's unfair that admin insist on these new rules especially for those who are not premium members and have no where to put notes. I understand it is to make their life easier for the anthology BUT its not rocket science for them to insist poets remove additional information prior to submitting to the anthology and if they do not follow this 'simple request' then their poem wont be included. I won't be submitting to any anthology now or in the future. hugs jan xx

I stopped entering contests once I received the PS Admin email. I am confused by those sponsors who ask for info and the Admin who do not. I will use Anaya's solution to input info in the Notes section, but also agree that exact dates are nice to show. In my personal catalogue of work, I keep the date written and the date posted to PS, as it may be years between my writing and my posting.

I agree with you, US, I too love to date my poems and this rule seems way too overboard...if premium members can add it in their notes section, what about non-premium members?

Good Morning Unseeking. This is just my opinion but I believe the date should be attached. There is nothing wrong with this concept and there is everything right with it. Have a wonderful day to you and to all. May this day find you and all well. Thank you.

In case PS Admin has changed the rules, the exact date should appear in clear view on the poet’s page as well. I for one want the date known every time I open the page.

Hi US! This e-mail was sent to all...This is just a reminder to those who are hosting PoetrySoup Contests. Things to Remember When Hosting a Contest You are not allowed to ask poets to put names on contest entries. You are not allowed to ask poets to put the contest information, dates, or any other info on their poems. That may cause their poems to be removed from PoetrySoup. If you are a Prime member you can put the information in notes! hope it helps.

If I remember Constance's blog correctly, the reply she received from PS said that nothing other than the poem itself should be written in the poem section from now onwards. At first I thought that was for just contest entries but I then understood it to be for whenever a poem is written - contest or not. As Anaya has stated above, you can put date, information etc in the notes' section which is available to Prime members. Apologies if I read that wrong. Cheers - Gary
