This Cowboy's Done

I'll ride with you awhile, my friend
Until the wind turns cold.
I'm not as young as I once was -
Just feelin' kinda old.

I used to ride straight to the storm -
"Weather be damned", I'd say.
I'd yell an' cuss at wind unseen
An' ride 'til end of day.

I'd swagger up to Shorty's bar -
Half froze an' frostbit too.
I'd drink my fill then drink some more,
When other men were through.

I had my pick of fair haired gals,
But never found that one
Who'd make me quit and settle down
An' say, "This cowboy's done".

So I wore out a hoss or two,
An' broke bones here an' there.
Rode from the Red to Rio Grande,
But never stayed nowhere.

For now I'm proud to ride with you
Until the wind turns cold.
An' then you're on your own my friend -
My tales have all been told

The older I get the better I like the idea that"there's nothing I can do about it now" and I put that poetically in this Cowboy poem.

Poetry Grass

I blow here in the prairie wind,
A grass that seems to have no end.
A pheasant asked me yesterday,
"How long you been here would you say?"
I scratched my blades and said, "Who knows?
Ten thousand years or more, I s'pose."
An' then the bird said,"If you please-
When were you really most at ease?"
I laughed at that, the way grass does,
That sounds somewhat like bees abuzz.
Then said,"That's easy friend, why shucks,
Between fences and pickup trucks!
The fences stopped the thunderin' herd,
An' no trucks were yet to be heard.
It was so peaceful, full of hope,
I was knee deep to antelope."
All that thinkin' got me upset -
I told that bird the trials we'd met!
"The Humans talk with grief an' scorn
Of long gone Bison and Longhorn -
Listen, pheasant, and I will tell,
The Buffalo can burn in Hell!
An' Longhorn meat will surely make
A big fat piece of butcher's steak!"
Well, I was through and I calmed down -
The Pheasant, nervous, looked around.
Said," I been eatin' a little seed."
I laughed, said,"Friend, take all you need!"

Come Dance

Come Dance

"Come dance with me", she said and smiled
And he fell off his chair.
He blushed and rose and all the while
He couldn't help but stare.

Prettiest thing he'd ever saw
Was askin' him to dance.
If he could only work his jaw,
He'd dern shore take a chance.

He led her 'round the floor with ease,
And fell in love right there.
She still recalls a gentle breeze,
But not a breath of air.

He gave up drinkin', runnin' 'round,
She filled up her hope chest.
He wouldn't lose what he had found,
She felt that she was blessed.

They bought a place just west of town
And filled it full of cows.
That ranch has never let them down,
They never broke their vows.

Now fifty years have come and passed,
They raised a crop of boys.
The grandkids all are girls at last,
They make a lot less noise.

He rocks upon the porch awhile,
Her voice comes from within.
He knows she says it with a smile,
"Come dance with me again."

Stepping Through Time

Maybe Someday

In a honky tonk in Denver forty years ago
I taught a strange brunette beauty how to dance real slow.
Our eyes had met and locked when the lights were way down low.
I was sure I knew her but just how I did not know.
We spoke not a word as we swayed slowly to and fro,
Her perfume had an eastern touch, Boston maybe so.
Her iv'ry skin was perfect with that soft radiant glow
That comes from satin sheets and a sailor's salt air blow.
Our bodies moved to music that said she won't say no,
We laughed together when they did the Cotton - Eyed Joe.
Then she was gone - disappeared -and left a note just so.
It said, "Thank you, cowboy! Maybe someday - Jackie O."

She Walked Away - Make Their Jaws Drop Contest

He watched her walk away that day
The tears ran down his nose
Her walk was frisky from behind
She knew just how to pose

He recalled those soft summer nights
When they would ride 'til dawn
He'd rub her shoulders gently then
'Til all the ache was gone

Then they'd stand high on mountain tops
While she would breathe the air
They'd watch the world as it rolled by
Without a single care

Then hard times came and raised their head
He was forced to sell her
He was a horse breeder, that's all -
Not a wealthy feller

A Pheasant In the Grass

I lie here in the prairie wind
Covered by grass that has no end
Just a pheasant seeking shelter
From a world that's helter skelter
'Tis the season of guns and dogs
And grown up men in camo togs
I stay as still as I can lie
In hopes the world will pass me by
I hear a gun and words out loud
Announce a kill in words so proud
I see them turn the other way
And I will live another day
This land is mine, I know it well
And men with dogs can burn in hell

Promise Me Cowboys

She had golden hair and a pickup truck
The girl was pullin' a U-Haul trailer
She came home to stay and to change her luck
Just to get shed of a blue eyed sailor

The girl was pullin' a U-Haul trailer
Promises were packed with purpose in mind
Just to get shed of a blue eyed sailor
Who lied and wasn't the marryin' kind

Promises were packed with purpose in mind
Cowboys she knew would replace that young salt
Who lied and wasn't the marryin' kind
Men who rode horses possessed no such fault

Cowboys she knew would replace that young salt
Then she would be free of men who might row
Men who rode horses possessed no such fault
She could just smile again and dance real slow

The girl was pullin' a U-Haul trailer
She came home to stay and to change her luck
Just to get shed of a blue eyed sailor
She had golden hair and a pickup truck

A Solitary Thought

A solitary thought formed in my mind
Way back in nineteen hundred fifty four
I laughed as it made things become so clear -
Why,I asked, have I not seen it before

I let it percolate there in my brain
As it generated new trains of thought
Paths of tomorrow were clear in my eyes
And tactics were formed for battles I fought

Now I look back from eighty years of age
And I must marvel at what the brain does
I think of that single important thought -
And I smile as I wonder what it was

Traveling Alone

I have walked the desert
Sailed the sea alone
Climbed an Asian mountain
And heard a glacier moan

I have loved and lost
And then loved again
I remember lips
That smiled at me back then

Love was just a word
Back when the world was new
She was young and lovely
Those years were but a few

We talked of tomorrow
And things we could not know
Then suddenly it changed
We'd different paths to go

I have flown an airplane
Ridden many a steed
I have crossed broad rivers
And traveled my own speed

Love was just a word
Back when the world was new
She was young and lovely
Those years were but a few

Life Is Good My Friend

Sittin' on the front porch with a brand new lover
Twinkle in her eye and the moon above her

I said,"What you thinkin'? -Something you could share?"
She said,"Somethin' naughty - somethin' I don't dare."

So we talked a little of this one-horse town
How we'd leave it one day when our time came 'round

But like a lot of things our time came and went
Raisin' cows and kids was how our time got spent

Three cowgirls and two cowboys make up our ranch
A Cody,a Wesley,June,Jane,and a Blanche

Sittin' on the front porch with my grey lady
Texas sun beatin' down, but the porch is shady

The one-horse town has served us well in the end
Our time was well spent and life is good my friend
