A DOG'S LIFE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I reign as king in a sovereignty supreme.
I sit by your side gazing, the world whizzing by.
From a rolled down window, a kaleidoscope of colors mesmerize.
My ears flapping wildly, a joyful delight.
The rush of air, a thrill to my canine soul.
As we speed along, the highway our open road.
The engine purrs, a tranquil hum.
The sun beats down, a warm embrace.
The miles fly by, like autumn leaves dancing down a street.
I feel alive in this wild, open space.
The scent of freedom, a fragrance so sweet.
The thrill of adventure, a canine story to tell.
My tail wags freely, a happy beat.
The wind in my fur, a soothing caress.
Surely this canine has been blessed.
The sun begins to set, a fiery glow.
The stars appear, a twinkling show.
The engine slows, a gentle ease.
Our journey's come to an end.
I snuggle close, a contented sigh.
For it's a dog's life, and I am hypnotized.
Happy Mother’s Day!
Hooray, should I say?
Nay! ‘Tis naught but disarray you fool
I dodge ducks – their beluga-toned feathers at least–
and the platinum pillows from whence they came
Whizzing by like my long four years of fame,
Eggs of pikachu hue, toast of darkest sinew
Oh no, I must go
She’s as happy as a blobfishy
How was I to know
Her special day was two months ago?
Hang on, You're nearly There!
I'm giddy, spinning around,
So near, yet so far.
On the slippery spinning
dip of serendipity.
Making do with the hoodoo of déjà vu.
I've seen that scene before!
On endless recycles
of somewhere when and there.
My prospectus is shod
with slithery wooden clogs.
Tripping, toppling precipitous,
edging ever closer to flying
right off the roundabout
by the whirling surge.
Whizzing around in circles
on the impending.
Barely holding on
with hands and arms,
billowing and centrifuging
in the passing wind.
Reaching outstretched to catch
just what and when,
could be just happening,
could be just passing on by.
"Into the Hexaline Groove"
On highway roads, we ply
With the wind in our hair,
Vehicles whizzing by,
We ride without a care,
Sudden brakes applied - hey!
Elephants block our way!!
Motorcyclists terrify me
I fear they will fly off the road
Who will stop to help?
Will we all keep whizzing by?
Every motorcyclist is someone’s baby
Someone’s grandchild, someone’s love
On the interstate where no one is careful, I cringe.
Terrified the rider is going to be maimed or killed
I say a prayer when I see a motorcyclist heading my way.
I try never to pass him or her.
Hoping not to see them again
Lying next to the road or worse.
The world is in a whirl
whizzing its way along
Topsy-turvy, turvy-topsy
straight lines all curvy
What is asked from us
but to exit that bus
to escape the crush
to avoid the rush
To slow down and find
truth amidst the hush
They’re roaring by with lights aglow
Akin space rockets, to and fro
Unfailing captains on steroids
Between this Earth and asteroids
This is the blood that moves the trade
This is America, conveyed
Truck-ships, with missions on the mind
Despite the night defy the grind
Rigs leave no waves in their wake
Them running fast and never brake
Men often follow their path
So to avoid the radar wrath
They land for brief prescribed rests
While speeding on the cryptic quests
We’re whizzing by, in cars and vans
And eye the sleeping caravans
United States, the land of trucks
Can’t pass them by sometimes, shucks
Resilient movers. And my crux?
Wouldn’t be the same without trucks
A terrorizing bang had my heart take a giant gulp.
I sat for a second, waiting for the next bang.
Is the word ending?
I ran outside to see
All the lights in the neighborhood went out
With a whistle and a whizzing sound
We saw them flip off all at once
It was dark now, no stars or street lights
What would happen next?
I expected stormtroopers to march up to me
I figured we would all be shot in the dark
No witnesses because none of us could see anything
There was a bit of rain, but it was not loud any more.
Sat in a porch chair, feeling alone and compromised.
We did not have electricity for four hours.
Discovered later that lightning had struck a transformer.
When life in the city becomes too much to bear
When I am overwhelmed by a sense
of hopelessness and unrelenting stress—
The cacophony of city streets,
A mish mash of jarring sounds
cars whizzing by, horns blaring,
Ambulance wails in a distance
Buses moan and screech
Clickety-Clack of the overhead
“L” trains rumbling by
The din, the clamor, the ruckus,
the racket, rattle and roar
The street musicians
Dogs barking furiously down the lane
The chatter at the roadside vendors,
Oh, the babel of voices, the drunken brawls,
I retreat into the arms of nature.
Away from this chaotic world,
Alone, just by myself,
in the serene solitude of seclusion,
Wrapped up in a swath of silence
in this solemn dusk
I am at peace with myself
Among towering trees and splendorous falls
With its gushing streams and magnificent mountains,
The verdant fields and emerald green valleys
with rivers meandering down through
rolling hills and lush plains…
Soothe my insatiable craving for quietude.
I hear them say,
don't ignore the stop sign on a big yellow school bus.
When you are in a hurry,
slowing down is still a must.
Did you know,
the cops might be around the corner watching you?
Today I saw this happen,
it was right before my sleepy eyes.
A blue car went whizzing by our bus,
then a red cop light took off like lightning.
We were all on our big yellow bus,
all safe and sound on this school day.
"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart" Helen Keller
In deepest darkness I wander the street.
Sounds looming, people rushing, don’t feel weak.
Bravely stepping. Child’s laughter makes me smile.
I come to the road with cars whizzing by.
Sun’s rays upon my face, I feel the heat.
Each stride to the unknown. Cool shadows streak.
Combination of scents and smells beguile.
Sharp senses, with confidence I rely.
My white stick taps out a sweet happy beat.
I’m enjoying my walk no longer meek.
Feeling I belong, I will stay a while.
I’m part of this bustling city, that’s why.
Special feelings come now that I am blind.
What my eyes don’t see, I see with my mind.
toss anger, he said
into the bin of waste
waste not mankind’s love
with abuse and bite
the bullet skies
high the eagle flies
why not the steeple
less with feathers flocked
why not the pews on
threadbare knees
that knock and palms
close touch of closed
and ethereal eyes, in shock
of amazing blue, far above
the whizzing bell of shots
some fell, some rise
both have a knell and sigh
anger flung like monkey dung
lay upon the sheetrock roof
its lies are born and cradled
evil has a childhood, is able
to wean and crawl, to fall
toss anger, he spoke
to the deaf and blind
they never woke nor wised
up. six feet downer done
swept into the bin of waste
a godforsaken life
("Mind's Eye Merit Badge" #67, 2020, original oil)
In the Spacious Green
Cutting through directly
across the stream of endless traffic
I arrive in an instant
on the median
calm, still, at peace
in the spacious green.
How can it be such a fool
has such opportunity?
How can it be such a direct path exists?
Everyone else whizzing past
glimpses this space
but cannot stop
imbedded in the flow
as they are
bound to journey
from here to there.
So fast they go
compelled to race along
ever faster
a blur in the mind’s eye
while I have simply ceased
at peace
in the spacious green.
I am a soldier with no rank
I'm on a beach behind a tank.
With bullets whizzing and shell's that crack
Bravery I do not lack.
We strom a concrete piller box
We hide in a hole just like a fox
We take the beach and start inland
Here we fight hand to hand
My comrades fall they are dead
But into battle we are lead
After five years the war is at an end
But I will never forget my long lost friend.
I’m going to be very sloth like in my entishness today.
No more whizzing ‘rund like a fly that’s lost it’s way!
You want some coffee and coffee is what ye’ll get! But my eyes have only just opened and my limbs haven’t got there yet.
You sometimes confuse the hell out of me but then again, you’re very small!
I need to do things very slowly if my brain’s to work at all!
I only turn it on when it’s needed for paid work.
It’s in a state of quiet contemplation right now and if that makes me lazy then lazy is this jerk!
There’s ye coffee so enjoy every sip!
I’ve decided I’m going to sit in mi-chair now and sit there for a bit.
If you need anything else today - ask politely and do it slow. I’ll contemplate what you ask of me and in good time I’ll let thee know.
