We ran to the car and drove to the rabbit farm
We wanted to see the bunny who caused so much harm
This bunny had torn up the hutch, thrown off the door
There was shrieking in the barnyard and a lot more
Watch your step, there is blood, someone said
A fox was thrown out of the coop on his head
Is he dead? Someone asked. Is he DEAD?
I thought there would be humor, I was scared instead.
Is the terror still in there? A teenage bunny asked.
We could hear slapping and hammering, which stopped at last.
Finally emerging was a petite little unassuming bunny.
I am her brother, said the other rabbit, and she ain’t no honey.
She is unassuming, humble, quiet, they said.
I looked at her boots and thought differently.
Has no one noticed these outrageous works of art?
Women who want to stay in the corner do not wear these boots.
I point them out and the listeners are surprised.
Anyone could wear those boots, one tells me.
Yes, anyone who could afford them.
Not many in this town can.
Maybe this is why she is unassuming and humble.
She does not want us to know how wealthy she is.
I stare at those boots for a long time in history class.
Wondering what else this new girl has to hide.
The bluebird was shy
Unassuming
She did not want to make waves
Or hurt anyone’s feelings
The lady in the window watched eagerly
Hoping the blue bird would understand
The house was made especially for her
Bluebirds are rare and humble
They think of others first
They wait, even past their turns
The lady was holding her breath
She knew if a wren or sparrow swooped in
She would have to build a new bluebird house
“it is for you” she tried to convey to the bluebird
The bluebird did not think she was worthy enough
She flew off, and stayed away for two days
Before deciding that it was okay to inhabit her new dwelling
She is unassuming, humble, quiet, they said.

My pet Gekko Little Elk,
in his tank on the shelf,
got his own terrible fright one night.
with a mantis he tangled,
and ended up mangled;
and his tail didn’t grow back right.
My cat jack chasing a mouse;
I’d prefer he’d chase grouse,
stuck his nose in hole in the ground.
Imagine my scowl,
when he let out a yowl,
mantis claws converted nose to ground-round.
The Unassuming Old Lady
She had them all fooled.
The detectives looked in sixteen directions.
Not one gave her a second glance.
One ten minute interview, and she was out the door.
She silently gloated that she had gotten away so quickly.
They did not even bother to ask her the right questions.
Because she is unassuming.
Because she is petite and older.
Because she is a grandmother.
Because she is a woman with a husband who is a judge.
Because she is a philanthropist.
Because she is a friend of the mayor.
She had gotten away with murder.
again….
She walked in not knowing she was the one the prophetess had seen
In her prophetic who is to be the next cat queen dream.
Her name was Crisp Paper, for she was the color of them
Her feet looked dirty, brown, and ugly, taking away from her fem.
But the boots were the nod the prophetess SueBeebob needed to see.
She went to the king and said that white cat with brown boots is she.
The king was not surprised for he had a bit of mysticism in his soul.
Choosing the perfect mate for his litters was his royal ultimate goal.
Crisp Paper was whisked away to be perfumed, pampered and fluffed.
She wondered what was happening in the land of Cat Creeper Cruffed.
When it was explained to her she laughed and said you made a goof.
Then she sat down and pulled off her brown boots with a poof.
SueBeebob had to take some opium and dream away in a glade,
To see whether the brown boots had to be natural or man-made
What did you decide? The king asked her when she came awake.
I think you have to choose your own queen, King Mistake!
surrounded by woods
my meadow is a haven
stranger lies in wait
Farm house is unassuming at break of day
She does not look mystical in any way
Pumpkins understand her magical powers
Discuss it with garden’s sweet wild flowers
On Halloween she’ll be a true haunted house
Eerie and scary sanctioned by witch’s mouse
Chased into corners into shadows galore,
Diabolical ghouls causing spookiest lore
Farm house smiled as she heard her truth spread,
Crazy cobwebs covering porch so smoothly wed,
Twinkling lights showing secret ghosts in the air,
Vampires dancing a waltz straight up her stairs.
tied to fierceness that was totally her own
tethered to a wlldness she had not conjured for years
she appeared as unassuming as possible
in order to be drawn into the confidence of the clan
she was quiet, stealthily waiting for her chance
to lasso them all into her eager, hungry, fire circle
to bestow upon them the revenge they so aptly deserved

Want of a princess but not of me
South of ill-proclaimed royalty
A prince in nature, heart, and mind
Blue glass learned between the lines
Glides to the stables cape awhirl
Who knows he’s meant to be my world
All for one or rather two
A cage for the dance that ensues
I’m reluctant beckon a smile
A glance to perfection’s profile
He’s aware tears gone by
Humor of a kind is dry
Golden flax adorns his brow
And glints in my eyes when I bend to bow
I was taken from my place
And from my despair came his face
But a curse unfair welded to my being
And kept that prince from vision seeing
So slowly this torture wrings itself out
‘Till the last of my days and eternal doubt
Fixated on one but not another
By his side derived of armor
So much more I wish to be
But mannerisms distant to airy
This is my final request
Just a one to him addressed
Until he knows what I’ve been through
It remains unrequited this, “I love you”

he sits in a corner
out of sight
out of mind
others are called
yet
he remains...
he waits patiently
longs for his name to be called
yet doesn't bug anyone
to ask when
his turn is next
I see him though
from my corner of the room
I see him sketchily through my tracking lens
making sure
nobody will leap out at me
I watch him
mr unassuming man
and realize
he is me.
