Stoop Poems | Examples

The Stoop

they sit outside the penny candy store,
old men slap dominoes on chipped tables,
smoke curling up like prayers
their wives gave up saying.
i lean on the fire escape,
watch them call me mami
like it’s my birthright —
call me solid, thick like the block,
hips wide enough to hold the gossip
and still swing.
they say ju got that caramel skin,
that soft bite in your mouth
when you try to say sweet —
they say i’m loud, i’m stubborn,
i argue with my hands and my hips,
i got too much to say for a girl
that comes from stoops and window sills.
but this is my gospel —
my curvy body a prayer,
my no’s a sermon,
my laugh breaks their cigar smoke,
my name rides the domino slam —
mira, mami, this girl ain’t leaving
her corner for nobody.

our body shell is now the source
the light we had once set out to seek
bliss drenched presence employs no force
truly as said, earth shall be inherited by the meek

Vibrant silence hijacked by thought,
is a web in which man is caught
but in truth we are always free,
if our heart be still, as it ought.

When head and heart with love agree,
we’re bound no longer to mind’s tree
and then fear recedes and joy leads,
making soul blissful and carefree.

The voice of conscience to us pleads,
let go of lust and past misdeeds,
surrendering our egoic will,
whence grace of God within us breeds.

Dwelling in mind-body apparatus,
recognising that it is a spring board,
making void-centric awareness status,
detached from outcomes, no goals to be scored,
love, light and bliss at our core is restored.
The path of ascension takes its own course
and since love never employs use of force,
both mind and heart entwined, need to be still,
recognising God as our sole resource,
whence once we surrender, voids within fill.

beauteous are colours of the rainbow
as prismatic reflections ~
provided they’re entwined

head-heart stand apart
although interdependent ~
sorrowful soul weeps

ego dissolve
for evolving
love solves all ills

upon hearing of
bliss of the butterfly
the sage too wished to taste
that nectar of the gods
said to never abate

the boon was denied
so the hermit surrendered
and entwined with the universe
whereupon love’s wings
fluttered as a verse

Stoop Ball

In Brooklyn, there were lots of stoops,
Most often used for sitting,
Or else as fields for stoop ball,
Where Spaldeens* would do our bidding.

You didn’t need a friend to play –
Just threw that ball, renouncing
Your expertise if you could only
Catch it after bouncing.

We had no use for yards or grass
To keep our playtime going,
Just one Spaldeen and someone’s stoop,
The perfect place for throwing.

*the way we pronounced Spalding, which
was a popular brand of pink high-bouncing balls

God’s boundless grace alone can enable,
transmutation of feeble body-mind
but to receive our heart must be stable,
for which dark desires should be left behind.

Ceasing grasping, once we begin flowing,
each tremor cognised by our mindful eye,
in timeless time, we get to that knowing,
which sages yearn for, as we wingless fly.

One with existence, blissful heart tranquil,
there is no doing that needs to be done,
for we have surrendered to God our will,
recognising His light and ours is one.

We rise when head and heart with love concur
or we may say that we stoop to conquer.

living light crystallised
descent restriction
ascent to heaven’s
by crucifixion

that that confines
also liberates
void centric stance
always celebrates

separation and union
polarity dance
on choosing stillness
we advance

life’s a springboard
for ascent
if we grant
love consent

Upon choosing to surrender,
we feel within, soundless thunder;
Holy Spirit moistens dry beaks,
as bliss beats rise and rapture peaks!

Cleansed of erst feral residue,
love glistens like the morning dew;
there then are no energy leaks,
as bliss beats rise and rapture peaks!

Shedding lust, we’re a child again,
measuring neither loss nor gain;
voice of conscience to us then speaks,
as bliss beats rise and rapture peaks!

Letting innocence have its way,
in joy presence begins to sway,
we behold then soul’s blushing cheeks,
as bliss beats rise and rapture peaks!

Entwined with the vast universe,
heart sings a melodious verse;
desires exhumed, no one here seeks
as bliss beats rise and rapture peaks!

Why do we rebel
when bliss beats propel
our soul?
Know God does indwell
each and every cell.
Our role
is just to dispel,
dark fears that repel;
love troll.

We cannot control,
bliss scriptures extol.
To rise,
peep through love’s keyhole;
there’s then no loophole,
monk wise!
Love does love cajole
to here now unroll,
heart’s prize.

Heed not ego’s cries
as they so apprise
and scroll
soul’s light that then dies,
misled by fear’s lies;
sinkhole.
Before love’s ink dries,
welcoming surprise,
be whole.

Spiritual practice is doomed from the start,
since any ritual involves our doership
and therefore unless ego’s made to depart,
futile is our meditation or worship,
unless ofcourse we choose to add love to cart,
exiting shallow game of one-upmanship,
whereupon once no agenda is tabled,
by God's grace, soul's ascension is enabled.
