memories of my youth
we wore fringed vests, the love beads
the long hair, the hair bands, the granny glasses
the flowing clothes, the bell bottoms
a fantastic time, the memories of my youth...

memories of the seventies
red hot lava lamp
shaggedy raggedy rug
peace sign plump flower
bell bottom hip huggers
fake fur vests and free love
open hearts, open ideas
nineteen seventy
volkswagon buses and Viet Nam
such a contradiction...

Salvaged
Surrounded by dry prairie grass
Amidst a sea of broken glass
Like metal soldiers dressed in rust
V-8's wear vests of orange dust
And I, when gazing at them there
Get goose bumps raising every hair
Each time, because I swear I see
Dead headlights staring back at me...

Motive
Nurture nice niche
Observe the way
Thrill touching teach
Instruct fond say
Choice charms charade
Eye each ember
Meet movements made
Yield yokes yonder
Move mystic mime
One odd obsess
Toss trouble times
Imprint impress
Vibrant verse vests
Etch each excess

Valentines
Vests in reds that breed
All good in hearts that feed
Laces in reds that exceed
Embraces in hearts that speed
No cold hearts decreed
That all broken hearts should bleed
In time all hearts will cede
Never on thorns or spikes that seed
Ever will true and loving hearts shall weed
Soft or hard, hearts will concede...

So Much Death
So many, so dead
Where did they come from, and why?
Why do they hate us?
So much death, so much
Young people die much too soon
Parents live to mourn.
Some of the young died,
Because their vests hid the bombs.
Executioners.
What should we do now?
How can we stop all of this?
Or must more die first?...

They Walk Amongst Us
Sullen Sally sat softly..
Sofa cushions.velvet,soft and lofty.
Pondering, world’s great thinkers.
Some friends in her past, were heavy drinkers.
She’d observe them with a smirk
Each,assuredly,a god,not a jerk.
They’d argue that their god was best.
Such arrogant angels, in sweater vests!

Epitome
Sense spice
Prompt price
Sweet smell
Touch tells
Love lives
Good gives
Taste touch
Move much
True tale
Spurs sale
Kind keep
Dance deep
Pure pace
Apt ace
Prize poise
Charm choice
Nice notes
Vests vote
Charm cheers
Dream dear
Last look
Bright book
Joy jumps
Soul sums

Sweet Shirts
"Sweet shirts!" they scream
as you pass wearing green
bright and so proud it hurts.
Good job wearing shirts.
Women with vests,
partially exposed chests,
I say, "Give it a rest!
Put away your chests!"
I once ate fruit,
since I thought it was cute,
and though it looked real good,
it was made of wood.
Now my mouth's sore,
and I just have no more
dish from which to serve dirt,
so I say, "Sweet shirts."...

Quest
Watch wise wit
Frame fond fit
Bit by bit
Feel fine face
True touch trace
Glimpse good grace
Sculpt scope sure
Prize peak pure
Choice crafts cure
Daze dreams dwell
Work words well
Touch that tells
Apt art ace
Tough times trace
Graft grand grace
Quit quaint quest
Reach ripe rest
Zeal zips zest
Craft creams choice
Pique prize poise
Vote vests voice

Counterterrorism
The cops with "Counterterrorism"
Splayed upon their vests
Alert us to the fact that they're
All set to make arrests.
They eyeball every passenger
In search of someone who
May secretly be plotting
To cause harm to me or you.
At one time I was comforted
By having them around,
Believing that their presence
Helped to keep us safe and sound.
But now it's more unnerving,
Like the sighting of a fungus,
For it makes me wonder if there is
A terrorist among us....

A Line of Kids
I often see a line of kids
With vests of neon green
Go walking down the street; it is
A charming urban scene.
They’re anywhere from two to four,
Connected by a rope,
So no one up and wanders off;
At least that is the hope.
A grown-up walks in front and back
And stops to deal with tears,
But mostly, it’s a happy group,
Or that’s how it appears.
I’m sure they get to run around
As those in preschool should,
Though, being city kids, they also
Stroll the neighborhood....
