Doing the Dogg

Doggerels, *raunchy rhyme*
Are what purists call crap.
But who has the time
To listen to those sap?
We Doggerelists,
Rhymers unstable,
Are going to persist,
Whenever able.

The Wonderfullest

My brain... it's one of the most wonderfullest Don't like to brag but gonna open it to tourists So they can observe How I manipulate words Will bamboozle all you literary purists

Dicen Puristas Del Haiku

Un poema de
Haiku sin un árbol no
tiene raíces.

In English (En inglés)

[Haiku purists say]

A Haiku poem without a tree has no roots.

Where Nights Reign Sans Dawn

My love of nature began
With an awe-struck scan
Of skies, how starry strings pan
Out to yon of yon,
Nights where reign and there’s no dawn.

Tanka |03.06.2021|

Poet’s note: A Tanka in a 7-5-7-5-7, not the usual 5-7-5-7-7 configuration, the same 31 syllables. The purists might frown.

Not of Flowers or Fashion

Tonight I write not of flowers or fashion
Instead, I write of dreams and passions

Prithee, poetry purists, please forgive me
~ Not to pretend such potency I cannot see

Newport 1965

Newport 1965
(Or Dylan Goes Electric)

This was the dream concert
folk was at its peak
Pete Seeger, Joan Baez,
Odetta, Peter, Paul and Mary
Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash,
Gordon Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia
But the prize, the dream was
to see Dylan play Blowin’ In the Wind
acoustically.
The folkie purists were shocked,
the dream had died.
Dylan played Maggie’s Farm with an
electric guitar and their world came
to an end.

Second Choice

The restaurant was noisy;
We shouted when we talked.
If I had been from Boise,
I’m sure I would have balked.

But all the hungry tourists
Outside Katz’s formed a line.
For deli, we’re not purists
So the other place seemed fine.

The food was mediocre;
The service merely fair,
But rain was the provoker
So we ended up in there.

Yet it was what we needed,
A refuge from the wet
So convenience superseded
The pastrami we’d not get.

Honest

I don't fight for the rules. Fools fight
For the right to use tools. Cool nights
Might cause fright for ghouls. Jewel light
Gives us reason for fuels. Cruel sprites
Shed light on shimmering pools.

I do fight for the roles. Politicians pursue
Unsavory goals. Technicians knew
They sold their souls. Conditions grew
Unfavorably for polls. Admissions accrue
Unsavory agency for tolls.

Shattered dreams
In the souls of dead purists
Rest in peace

Shifting

I never drove a stick shift
Although once, I tried to learn.
I think they’re mostly gone now
And I don’t see their return.

A manual transmission
In some sports cars can be found,
Yet there aren’t many models
For the purists still around.

It’s kinda like a TV set
With knobs you have to turn
Instead of a remote or
An Alexa you can spurn.

Improvements make life easier,
But some wish they’d revive
The older methods that were used
To watch TV or drive.
