Clouds and a moment
When a cloud rolled over lake Michigan
cast an eerie spell of otherness over the lake
the stillness was profound when a bird
shrieked in horror.
When the cloud disappeared up yonder
a ferry crossed the lake's undulating water
reached the shore as a wet handshake
of monotony.

I cannot see the trees,
nor a single leaf,
nor the grass that ripples like water
in some half-forgotten dream,
dear people, I cannot see at all,
no one,
nor full recall:
the meaning of laughter,
the miracle of love,
the warmth of a smile,

of a lover, of a friend, of family,
even strangers, people...
I am blind,
lost in the folds of myself,

We live distantly, one inside the other.
We house and rent the unwelcome and heaven sent.
I tend toward you
where your room overlooks mine.
Open doors keep us secret.
Where your breathe reaches I inhale.
Love enters through every window.
Chosen are we to be closer than blood,
otherness talks in the same mouth.
You have planted my garden
with my own willing hands.

Depression is not a tidy string of letters,
it is not this, not darkness, not sadness,
neither an emotion nor a poem, nothing
as easy as pain, nor the idea: 'melancholia'...
it is neither a sapphire nor a raven's quill,
nothing tangible,
nothing as perfect as a teardrop.
It is a lack, a deep and profound failure, to actualize
the beauty of existence into otherness,
into something,
into love.
I have no more love to give.
I retreat into non-doing.
