Killing

Life

life
— on the edge
(Red Lodge Montana: August, 2025)
The road is your only
companion
When the memories won’t kill you
—but the lingering will

Crossing Montana for the first time…
everything was changed
My heart no longer my own
—my spirit there reclaimed
(Villanova Pennsylvania: January, 2017)
Frank had
a ranch in
Montana
he'd ride
his pygmy
pony as i
try to sing
along my
voice is
a little hoarse
as i ride my
porcelain
horse
into
the
sun
set
Form:
Too big to absorb
Montana at hand
Its distance won’t focus
Montana at hand
Two eyes not enough
Montana at hand
Forever illusive
—Montana at hand
(Dreamsleep: May, 2023)
Decisions that last forever…
choices made every day
To commit with our hearts,
our heads in the wind
—the difference for Poets to say
(St. Mary’s Montana: August, 2020)
Mama Martha at Maranatha
had been a mama
would go to Maranatha
they called her Martha
Was Martha middle name
of Rosalyn Carter?
when we ate manna
in shape of bannana
was in Montana
On a barstool
somewhere
in a lost America
with a stranger
who calls me friend
All options
dwindling
my fate in his hands
—and nearly at the end
(Choteau Montana: Ranger Jacks Bar, August 2004)
CHINA and INDIA grow the most bananas
More than in Hawaii, Florida, or even Montana
So China and India are true banana republics
Our dumb luck, NOT Lubbock (TX) ~ Nyuk, nyuk
Rising
by sin
falling
by virtue
Caught in the
blind spot
of destiny’s
rhyme
Words
overweight
in consonant
sorrow
Vowels
deftly stolen
inverting
— the time
(Cooke City Montana: August, 2025)
Oh great father
give this child a home,
give him the love of a good family
and a lover of his own,
give him a fire in his spirit
and hope in his heart,
my the heavens bless him,
under the wild Montana sky.
So much lost…
so little gained
Prairies in judgment,
our destiny framed
So little gained
for what we lost
Spirits now orphaned
—tomorrow the cost
(Browning Montana: Blackfoot Reservation - May, 1995).
Because of Montana
I am with you,
now.
Because of Montana
the wind still whispers
through the pines.
Because of Montana
I can lay next to you
even here in the desert
and heat shimmering,
cement of a city.
People
surround
but I’m always
alone
In naked
seclusion
fleeing
the throne
Caught in
the snarl
of their
consonant rhyme
Shunning
all
overtures
— fields still unlined
(Gardiner Montana: August, 2025)
DENVER SKIES UNSURPASSED
countryfied with Thompson Square
gueetar and bobbing heads
beach balls floating
not upbeat
enough for me

*My favorite John Denver song is Wild Montana Skies
Sitting outside the firelight
I share this valley with the moon
The stars twinkle overhead
and the bullfrogs begin to croon
My fire sparks its own starlight
drifting up into the night sky
To God I give a prayer
as a wolf starts a lonely cry
A young tennis brat from Indiana
Dressed in a psychedelic bandana
When he put it on
It glowed bright neon
Lit up the court from here to Montana
Inspired by Kevin Shaw's
State Limerick Poetry Contest
But not a contest entry
The feared bounty hunter Frankie McGill
Was tracking bank robber , Montana Bill
Frankie caught him by surprise
Shot him dead between the eyes
Now Montana's on his way to Boot Hill...

The calendar says spring has arrived
through the window the sun shines
Outside the weather does not agree
But I still ride the fence and look through
the narrow slit between my hat and scarf
looking for signs that the world might be changing
I don't think spring in Montana can read
I’ve doodled and dawdled in Delaware,
Piddled in Pennsylvania without care,
I’ve been to New York and Alabama,
Michigan, Missouri and Montana.
I’ve travelled in every state, my friend,
And I can tell you that, in the end,
If you lose your mind - see how it can be -
The very best one is insanity.
There was a lady from Montana
Who fell in love with a banana,
Which had such an appeal
She felt urged to reveal
They planned to elope to Havana.
She rented a seaside cabana
Nested between beach and savanna.
At a party she threw
Came a Chiquita new
And the new two flew to Montana.

Form:
Those motel memories return.
The colored comic pages opened first
And water bubbling in an urn
And powdered coffee slaking my communion thirst.
Montana windswept plains outside.
Stark desolation’s existential rites within.
But earth I’ve trekked since then rolls wide:
And prayer, not newsprint, now assuages sin.
