TRIBUTE TO COLLARDS

Great green globs
Grimy messy mound
Never finer found
Smack, drool, sniff
Knife, plate, spoon
Taste, savor, share
Stuff, sweet, sleep

Crumbled Leaves of Fall
I CRUMBLED YOUR LEAVES
WITH GLOVED HANDS
AND MIXED THE RESIDUE WITH SAND
I PLANTED MY COLLARDS AND KALE
MY TURNIPS AND HORSRADISHES
SOME WERE IN THE PALE
I CRUMBLED YOUR PRETTY LEAVES
SO THAT THEY MIGHT NURISH MY PLANTS
COMPSOE IN THESE SANDS
FOOD FOR MY PLANTS!...

Premium Member Cornbread
Collards cornbread piled
On pretty plastic plate
Red eye grits with cheese for taste
Nice slice of sweet potato cake
Black eyed peas good to me
Really did pass on the pigs feet
Entire brown biscuit with molasses
All soul food fed the masses
Dig in enjoy with tea in glasses...

Collard Greens
It's hard to find good collard greens
Where I live in New York.
You'll rarely find them hanging
Off a New York restaurant fork.

But I'm in Carolina now
So everywhere you look,
Some barbecue is being prepped
To very slowly cook.

Tonight I got to sample some
And you know what that means -
Along with my pulled pork there was
A heap of collard greens.

I savored every bite because
Tomorrow I'll be home.
The only collards there will be
Those mentioned in my poem....
