The Barroom Clown
The patrons wait for him to come in each day
To hear him speak they would even pay
Always smiling, he laughs and sings
And my cash register constantly rings.
At 2 am the clock will chime
For now it’s almost closing time
There he sits the barroom clown,
I wonder where he goes when the bar shuts down....

Cute
Cute
by JD DeHart

They practice variations:
        That IS cute
        THAT is cute
        That is CUTE
I marvel at their odor
of new shoes, how their reason
for being seemed to be wrapped
up in cash register rings,
how they travel in a squad
of quick hands and uneven
hips, squealing at each item....

Follow Me
It was four in the morning
when he entered the 7-Eleven
and pointed at the cash register.

A middle-aged woman
hands over a pile of dollars.

He tells her: “My name is Jesus – follow me.”

She checks her makeup.
He waits patiently for her in the parking lot.

They drive away in a beat-up truck
hauling gardening tools....

Atm Terminator

Sarah Shopper!
Coupon please budget-y listen
and bankruptcy understand

That ATM Terminator is out there —
It can’t be mall bargained with,
nor consumer reasoned with

An Automated Teller Machine
doesn’t feel purse pity,
or cancelled check remorse
Or insolvency fear

And it absolutely
will not cash register stop,
checkout ever!
Until you are empty pocket dead...

Politics Horn Kiss Poem of the Day
Politics Horn KISS Poem of the Day

Of each one of Republicans and Democrats
Which ones do you think are total ding bats?

Their total intelligence is so low that it
won't even ring up on a cash register.
No wonder we always need to keep
so much change on hand which are
always pennies because they are not
worth a plug nickel. I tried to keep a
penny for their thoughts but they
kept trying to spend it.

C/R/Y
Like a cash register my heart has been opened and shut
Certain events in my life I still can't get past
I can't quite get a handle on this love thing
I guess it's just my luck
But it's ok
Sometimes friends don't understand
I feel like I'm alone in this madness
Nobody to hands me tissues
I'm left alone to deal with these issues
Sometimes I wonder if there is something
wrong with me.
With my inability to love.
All I do is feel bad inside
    & C/R/Y...

At An Asian Supermearket
A throat tickling ambience
of chili garlic sauce
settles over rows of Mung Bean paste
and bottles of oyster sauce.

Then clumsily
I knock over and break a glass jar
of hot curry powder.

The lady at the cash register
watches me jump backwards
flapping at the spicy miasma.

She is sixteen going on fifty.
Her disdainful frown speaks volumes.

I sneeze, and inwardly apologize
to a pantheon of Chinese Gods
for my sudden and wistful desire
for a White Castle slider....
