A Yellow silk scarf
He bought a yellow silk scarf at a second-hand shop
In Cheshire, the type actors were, when meeting for
A drinks party; the mirror told me he wore the scarf
With seedy elegance, which normally comes to those
Who has no self-awareness, better still, ignores what
Other people think.
In Ashdod, someone broke into his cabin, the thief
Stole his Ronson lighter, he could overlook that
But his yellow silk scarf went unforgiven forever

Winter swirls on the morning mist
Undulating clouds blowing west.
Cobwebs clear with a forceful fist
Winter swirls on the morning mist
A snatch of red wool to untwist
Caught in an updraft on the crest
Winter swirls on the morning mist
Undulating clouds blowing west
The glow of lights beckoning home
A snatch of red wool on the hook
Soggy from the day’s windy roam
The glow of lights beckoning home
Curled before the fire alone
Sweet calico purrs in the nook
The glow of lights beckoning home
A snatch of red wool on the hook

Meredee returned to the house shivering from the cold.
I thought you took your woolen scarf, said her Grandma Bold.
I did, she said, but her teeth were shaking, her fate sealed.
Look here grandma, said her daughter, staring out into the field.
Outside was a tiny Scottish calf, with woolen scarf around his neck you see.
I had to protect my baby Doug, said Meredee. He needed it more than me.

Helen had a teddy bear’s hat of blue
She had a teddy bear’s scarf
I bet her underwear is full of bears too
Said an uncouth guy name of Barf
I have regular white panties today
She said primly in a not very nice way
Irritated that is what he did say
Barf and she never got along at all after that day

If I was a piece of clothing,
I think I'd be a scarf.
I try to keep people warm,
But sometimes I'm just scratchy instead.
I am forgotten on a cold winter's night,
When the winds blow at the nape of your neck,
And you wonder why I was left at home.
Or perhaps you think you don't need me,
And I sit in the closet unwanted.
That's okay;
I know you can't help
When you forget something.
But when the cold winds blow,
And you wonder how you're going to stay warm,
Just try to remember me.
If only you took me out of the closet,
I know we'd have a grand time.
But here I sit.
Covered in dust.

Early morning in one
Mother take a bus ride to the city
Blank by its aim
No one knows why.
She cried as she goes back at two
But I could swear
Her black handkerchief was on her head.
Her children went around her
To comfort her
There was only sob and deep breath
That I could hear.
Almost dusk, we take our supper
Then sleep to bed.

Male wearers it makes women by half,
Even the man with a bulky calf;
In my office won’t be excused staff
Save female ones, “You save me your scarf!”
Quickly change their sex some men can,
Wise debates on what one should wear ban;
No more hunger to answer A Man:
Gender-blind has been a Dick Dan!
But does Dan need this decoration
That does affect male restoration,
Kick-starting female adoration:
Dan’s great speech: a female oration…
To masculinity a scar
And Dick Dan has with it gone quite far:
Lots of Scarf in his scarf-tired car;
Round his neck one with a wench like star.

This old gal is desperate for a new coat
Rust covers her cracked and peeling frame, but
No one seems to notice for
In Winter, an icy lace shawls warmly wraps around her.
In Spring, misty dew drapes her shoulders.
In Summer, variegated greens and blues surround her like a fine silk scarf.
In Autumn, her mottled tones are enveloped within Joseph's arms.
She stands a stately Queen robed in royal array,
Reigning over her domain with
Seasonless grace and grandeur.

She Looked Like…
A Christmas tree
Decorated all over
With appendages!
A scarf round her neck
To keep out the chills
A mask on her face
To keep the virus
Out of her place
Her internal workings
Needing protection
And glasses…
So she could see her way
To those essential shops
Where a smile might greet her
And take away…
The weight of her meagre shop
Later and returned home
Her hat removed
The dangly earrings
Came into view
Nodding a cheery hello
This noticed by herself alone
She lived in isolation
And far from her old home
Where she had raised her family
She would see them again soon

They say I am covered and oppressed
But I am just modestly dressed
I can walk, I can talk
I can agree to disagree
To be who I want to be
I am free
This scarf I wear represents my dignity
It is a mark of my modesty
My past, my culture
My present, my future
So make no mistake of the way I dress
There are much greater ways to impress
I have a fire inside
That no cloth can hide
Follow my trail as I blaze on with this crown of purity
Watch me soar with my wings of virtue and humility
I am all that I can be
Just take a peek of soul and revel at its beauty
A kaleidoscope of dreams unraveling my identity
I am free.

What is it then that holds us in its grasp
For fear has fled and love too long denied
Restrains itself within the hour of taps
Binding itself to latent tears uncried
For time will pass among the stoic stones
Count cadence for the passing hood and scythe
As leaves of broken dreams that hang alone
Cling to failed promises of coming home.
So does the weathered scarf of tartan pain
Conceal the graying edge of times disdain
Soft colors bleeding through the moors and brae
Inflame the sunrise wish to come, to stay.
For those who rest beneath this solemn earth
Are those who bore the colors, gave it worth.

I always thought a scarf was simply
Meant to warm your neck
And wore one only when I set out
On a winter trek.
But one day, having left mine home,
Just walking several blocks
I shivered from my turtleneck
Right to my woolen socks.
I tried that walk again that day,
My scarf, though, wrapped ‘round tight
And coziness enveloped me;
The wind just couldn’t bite.
So whether yours is store-bought
Or hand-knit by Aunt Sydelle,
A scarf worn on a winter’s day
Will surely serve you well.

SCARF
bruised
neckline
behind scarf
romantic flame
cannot be explained
to her parents
she’d just die
they’d be
hurt

You’re like a red silken scarf caught in the deep thorny brambles of my mind.
One that I let slip through my fingers And set Adrift for years on zephyrs of quantum time.
And miraculously you lightly floated back with flashes of crimson and black
As it got embroiled, torn and flailing ,
Forever more caught in this emotional bind.
Cold forces tear at the fabric as you wave in winds of uncertainty,
But I will never let you go.
You’re trapped in the prism of my mind
Your light bending and refracting, illuminating my darkness and filling my heart with grace.
I understand that the gales will always blow and all I have is memory so cruel so kind,
And I will never let you go
I love you so
And I will cling to you
Like the silken scarf caught in the brambles of my mind.
