Officer please, I respect the police
Please give me a warning and my release.
Who knew a red headlight’s illegal?
Dear Santa said "light it, it's legal!"
Yo officer, no gifts for your nieces!

scraping by
picking my youth
out from under my nails
the trace remains
of an assailant or two
on the page
make sense of symmetry

walking home, moods surly as the sky
why, I don’t remember
then we were caught in a sudden shower
not cats and dogs
but more than a drizzle
a middling rain
places where we could have taken shelter
but we kept walking
angry at the day, at each other
then it came down harder
we broke into a trot
cursing the sick weather
most expletives censored by the raindrops’ clatter
plowing ahead, but not moving as fast as we could have
through the blur of perpendicular water
by the time we ducked
into our apartment building, we were
a fluid mess of sodden clothes and plastered hair
raining on the lobby floor
and laughing like stupid teenagers
who had just pulled off a high school prank
and the wet
had seeped into my memory

Run In Hope Not Again
With a certain person, we had a run in,
And never want to or ever do it again;
Biased must be,
Against only me,
Due to being woman and he prefers men.

“Don’t walk on the grass”, “No dogs”, “Don’t shout”,
“Flooding ahead, turn around, don’t drown”.
These are the signs telling us what we should do,
What we can and can’t do around town.
Don’t get me wrong, I like a short warning,
A warning of an imminent remove from this race.
But as far as experiencing the consequences of it all,
It’s my feelings I want to embrace.
I would like to smoke, ride a bike on the grass,
And then run on the cement in the rain.
And then when I finish my long journey home,
I won’t mind the gap off the train.
I think most signs are superfluous, unneeded, over used,
Should be returned back to the shelf.
And people around town can own their own actions,
You know, like taking responsibility for oneself.

on a cold dark night
the shadows give chase
and im filled with fright
im locked in a maze
