Premium MemberRods and Cones

cells in your eyes are rods and cones
rods see shapes, stars, dogs, old cell phones

cones see colors, sharp and blurry ones too
they figure out yellow and azure blue

rods and cones are both important to you
what could eyes without rods and cones do?

cones and rods, rods and cones,
add to my pleasure of creating poems

Premium MemberRods of Steel Will Bend

I heard the steady cadence
The drum roll in the street
A thousand tramping soldiers
Tasting of defeat.
The sound of occupation
I thought it could not be,
A flag so full of justice
Would always flutter free.
I had dreamed a thousand dreams
And cast them to the wind
But often had forgotten
Even rods of steel will bend.
Raucous laughter melted
In the wake of dust and steam
Then suddenly awakened
I found it all a dream.

Pretzel Rods

The corner candy store displayed,
On the counter next to where you paid,
Tall pretzel rods, two cents a pop,
In a glass container with a top.

They were often added to a bill –
Toss some pretzels in, please, if you will –
Or were ordered by a kid who’d planned,
His pennies clutched in a sweaty hand.

But the best was sitting on a stool,
On a Saturday or after school,
With your mom who’d let you have a treat –
A vanilla malted, cold and sweet.

It was served within the silver cup
Which the owner’d used to mix it up
With a pretzel rod included, free;
There was no place I would rather be.

The sweet of sugar, tang of salt
Combined with the vanilla malt
Made taste buds squeal with pure delight
With each and every sip and bite.

An artist paints the sky
He chose golden rods in fall waved them over all
Master~high
Used robin's eggs
Filled his painter's round bucket tall
Left dregs
He laughed
At colored scrawl
Draft
An artist paints the sky
Filled his painter's round bucket tall
Draft

Golden Rods of Light

Long slender fingers
golden rods of light
Reach for flowering
foliage thirsting in
His sight

Nature
provides the nurture
A constant supply of
balance upon dawns
newly designed future

Her fingers
playfully hop across
crested aqua waves
Toward apricot sands
that reside along our
  shores unscathed

Trumpet vines
cling to a stony ledge
Gracing the walls of
a sandy path that leads
to the water's edge

Rods Colors (By Kimmy Holmes, My Daughter)

the cigarette is always burning
your mind always turning
your bigger than most people
not too big for me
when you squint at me that way
I don't wonder what you think
I see me in living color
I see me on the brink
I wonder why you stay
I'm past my expiration
I guess you're alot like me
your here for the duration
