Give yourself
A round of applause.
You did pull one over on me
And laughed at my expense.
Well-done, grasshopper.
Well-played, but you revealed
The tricks of your trade in the process.
The jig is up, Mr. Swindler;
Now I get to laugh at you
Reuse them again to snow me.
You regurgitate the same old methods
To hoodwink and entrap me.
Haven't you no shame?
You're as transparent as cellophane;
so predictable I enjoy mocking you.
You bit me once and broke my skin,
But now I see you've got no teeth!
Born yesterday, my eyes
Are wide open today!
There's no magic in your sleight of hand.
I've got your number, and you're out of tricks.
You've tried your level best
To inscribe "fool" on my forehead,
But have you checked yours
In the mirror lately?

Once bitten, twice shy,
You are vigilant;
You become cautious,
Like a shameful plant.
You are now fearful,
As you feel the pain;
You're careful about
Doing it again.
When one rejects you
And hurts you inside;
You are reluctant
To swallow your pride.
You'll never fall from
Grace a second time;
Like refraining from
Committing a crime.
When you are injured
Beneath the blue sky;
You will be on guard,
Once bitten, twice shy.
There once was a lion so dread
His trainer must keep him well fed
For if this bad lion
Got hungry for Brian
Old Brian might just end up dead!
Ole Leo the lion acclaimed
Like to play the “I’m so sweet” game
Slow Brian was lulled
And his arm it was culled
Now, the zoo’s out a lion it seems!
I often recall the days of past
When love was deep, strong and vast
The abundance of dreams once forlorn
Deep inside me, all reborn
He opened my heart to things obscure
Showed me passion true and pure
He unleashed the me that longed to be
Held me up and set me free
Swathed and ruffled wings are now unbound
Soaring high above the ground
A shot rings out in the dark of night
Blindsided; no chance to fight
In a single moment all is lost
An internal holocaust
The pain and anger rages within
A vision of her... with him
All my questions remain unanswered
Falsehoods of the spoken word
With fear and doubt residing within
Will I? Can I love again?
