To savor this glass I don't need to go
To see the French vineyards within Bordeaux
Or walk the wine cellars of a chateau.
It won't require to see where the grapes grow
Or squeeze their juices between every toe.
Some might prefer all that grandeur, although
For me, only this does contentment owe –
To sit in my chair and sip this merlot
And drift to sleep with a blissful sigh, "Oh."

With trembling fingers I poured Merlot wine
Overflowing the rim of his chalice
Salty drops on my lips, the taste of brine
from tears spilled as he spoke words of malice
His offensive, "Cheers," I chose to decline
the sting of mockery, cold and callous
Piteous, I lingered without relief
Flooded with torment, I'm drowning in grief

When next my eyes are blessed to set on you,
May that be soon or further down the line,
Will tears refuse to paint with only blue,
And choose instead less colors viewed as mine;
I’ll see no beauty where it was before,
No lilac petals shall your garden grow,
And that it won’t, in dark, then to a store,
Where bottles sold are filled with fine merlot;
One sip is all these words will need to slur,
That tell left feet, a pair, attached my legs,
To stumble forth when hunger might occur,
But hear eternal hollow famished begs;
For years have passed since wine thin veins unwind,
Same your resplendence which turns vision blind.

One glass of Merlot makes my innards tingle
Dry wine has a way of making me romantic
Two glasses blur my vision, but I'm eager to mingle
Half a carafe finds my language less than pedantic
No misinterpretation, dwell not on meanings semantic
