Striding into the snowy fortress my tepid heart at double time
paces
Entering a pine colonnade sprouting a wintry mane, saddled with
velvety laces
Cloaked with icy needles forming a brittle, hooded trellis
Golden beams seap through the shielded parapet gilding the frosty
mantle with an iridescence
The distant peaks shrouded with the glow of satin evanescence
Following an unmarked, winding trail spurred on by an eery
prescience
My unbridled senses discharged; my tempered spirit for the
mysterious journey braces
A haunting stillness shadows my movements; stealthily my
boundary encases
Shuttered from the outside world and its vapid spaces
Where time is muted and nature's discordant rhythm races
A pristine environment where tendrils caress, limbs bristle, the cold
wind chases
A cloudy fondue swirls overhead and each spiralling steeple
embraces
Squawking squirrels prance freely on the floor without leaving any
traces
Bald eagles glide above the crenelated spires crowning the summit
with their magestic graces
A maverick-cardinal's chirps funnel through the shrouded mist,
temporarily the dreary damper effaces
A Snowy owl crests over the hollowed thickets scanning the tight
nooks and crawl spaces
White-tailed deer cautiously trek through covered thickets, matted
fields which their camouflage erases
Filtering through the blustery labyrinth, an open field the rough
terrain displaces
The broad meadow teaming with yesterday's cares my
adventurous journey replaces
Looking longingly back on my charted path, my bridled heart the
solitary life praises
There’s a place in the Blue Ridge.
Where the mountain faces Tennessee.
It escapes detection and is accessible
only through childish reverie.
By all children who in their thoughts
and dreams of feelings not forgot.
Their young minds clouded in mystery
of fairy tale and chivalry of Lancelot.
This Alpine glen, gently sloping meadow,
with Fraser fir trees and flowing well,
Periwinkle, sage and wild strawberry,
Sporting Bee Balm and Oconee Bell.
Its praises sung by lonely whippoorwill,
a place for animals to share refuge.
Where the small rule in importance
and the large never think of deluge.
The log cabin long since turned to dust
A tiny pile of stone, not much
to indicate the love, the life
haunting this place with gentle touch.
The young girl in eighteen sixty two
left alone by need of country.
Then the daughter raised alone
who taught the animals to be friendly,
A legacy of love and life’s spirit spent
in this lovely place of quiet retreat.
Befriending woodchuck and white tailed deer
and others she would chance to meet.
The animals learned that survival of the fittest
did not belong in this place of loving favor.
That it was much more beneficial
to learn to live lovingly together.

As I near the stratosphere, I let loose
an untamed, raw rainbow
I pull on the tattered, worn ropes
of my hand-sewn hot-air balloon across
the hidden boreal quarry hill in the north
they rose above the nose
of a furious focus bear
and whack the back legs
of a swift white-tailed deer
on the tips of their fingers
they follow the wave's crest
gliding across the shimmering bay
toward the murky, muddy waterfall
I reach out from the wicker basket
to feel the wings of the migrating seagulls that fly south
I imitate their husky honking
before fading like a dandelion
awe-inspiring Sitka Alaska Sunset
I secure my spaceship to a sturdy sprout
relax on the radiant crimson ratoon
I mumble to the gray owl
"Who huh huh?" said the deep dock
spinning, spinning, swirling
the wind whirled the canopy away
as the scarlet sunset slackens into the starry sky
I let go of my bulky loads and flew into the stratosphere
without regard for any impediments
any concerns are left behind
above the clouds, I set sail

Deep in our forest woodland,
where white tailed deer roam free,
I thought to take a moment,
to listen quietly,
to the whispered sighing,
of breezes in the trees.
As pleasant a sound as I have ever heard,
for my senses it doth please!
There I came upon deer grazing,
they showed no sign of fear,
the moment was endearing,
as they watched me standing near.
Silently I stood watching,
twas heaven sent for me,
until a Ruffed Grouse drumming,
disturbed my reverie.
Like a painted pastoral scene,
captured by an artist’s eye,
it was a moment frozen in time,
though time itself flew by.
Then with their white tails swaying,
they trotted down the glade,
which ended my encounter,
with a moment heaven made.
It’s often I remember,
that quiet, forest scene,
when Nature’s generosity,
with pleasures seldom seen,
offered me an insight,
into her hidden realms
where her favour was revealed.
A delight that overwhelms.

Succulent strawberries slide off the vine in front of appreciative robins
The smell of fresh cantaloupe wafts in the warm July Kansas air
White tailed deer have wandered up to eat my juicy yellow apples
Yard alive with fruity fragrances that have replaced May’s lilac aroma.
Tiny almost indiscernible moon is slipping away, sun glides gently into view.
Kind neighbor brought me fresh peaches last night, delicious on ice cream.
Gather thirty stalks of rhubarb, determinedly head toward my raspberry patch.
There will be fresh cobblers tonight with cinnamon and sugar on the top.
Crow gives me a severe scolding. I have not thrown anything his way yet.
About noon I will throw out a few split open strawberries for the butterflies
A monarch and a dragonfly flit past me. My garden is more alive than ever.
Is that watermelon ripe? Wow! I will collect it on my way back to the porch.
O' my Candied fruit of patience, why your face glimmer
Beneath my eyelids, flares of love shimmer
In my heart ,you live forever into "pieces of peace"
as white clouds spread in the sky like shaggy fleece
Arise my soul from scary nightmares of dark night
as neap tides rise in ocean when angle betwixt sun and moon is at right
I conglomerate you and weaved into beads of poetry
as squirrels glean nuts in orchard under tree
Everyday in my life, you born as new rising dawn
as white tailed deer gives birth to nimble baby fawn
When our voices are muted,we are fastened to the chains of silence
as the desert whispers without any sirens

I drive slowly through a winding lane
Where white-tailed deer are often seen
I see, sadly, carcasses of creatures slain.
I am careful driving the fencerows between
Respecting the rights of the critters here
Where white-tailed deer are often seen.
Stopping to let a raccoon wander clear
And two squirrels who were in the path
Respecting the rights of the critters here.
I saw the remains of a sordid bloodbath
A car had slammed into a handsome buck
And two squirrels who were in the path.
I wondered why the driver it had struck
Who could not spare an innocent deer’s life
A car had slammed into a handsome buck.
When lack of concern for life seems rife
I drive slowly through a winding lane
Who could not spare an innocent deer’s life,
I see, sadly, carcasses of creatures slain.

Climbed up on the mountain
Fingers almost touched the sky
Even had to duck my head
As a cloud came tumbling by
Felt I was invincible
Amongst the blue and gray
Maybe God had rested here
On that holy seventh day
I could see for miles
Air was clear and bright
Sun shining through the trees
Was a visual delight
Leaves they seemed to sing
A song upon the breeze
While floating to the ground
Asking " Catch me if you please"
Then I saw an eagle
Soaring in the sky
Looked at me suspiciously
Giving me that eagle eye
Then a little chipmunk
Came by to say hello
Cheeks stuffed with acorns
Think he's wanting me to go
Saw a white tailed deer
With big brown Bambie eyes
Quickly turn and run away
Her, I really did surprise
So I will take this day
Arrest it deep inside
All the beauty that I've seen
Cause He was by my side
I was walking down a wooded trail.
Sunlight filtered in through the trees.
I came across a weathered fence, post and rail.
The fence held a hive of noisy, busy bees.
I looked across an open field.
There stood a beautiful white-tailed deer.
The buck used the bushes as a shield.
I moved a bit, he then ran off in fear.
The trees and bushes were lush and green.
So dense, that there was a hush all around.
I walked on, feeling so serene.
Beautiful and peaceful, this place I have found.
I heard the sound of trickling water nearby.
I looked around and found a natural spring.
It came from the mountains, a fresh water supply.
Nature has given us everything.
The sunlight was beginning to fade.
It was time to leave this special place.
What beauty this day had displayed.
I am leaving with a wistful smile on my face.
An Amazon Adventure
A Narrative Poem by C Russell
Let’s go, let’s go to the Amazon far,
We’ll catch a boat, won’t need a car!
Let’s see, let’s see the wildlife here,
Jaguar, anteater and white tailed deer.
Let’s travel, let’s travel along the river, too
Down the rapids in our wooden canoe.
Let’s find, let’s find some curious fish,
To see a piranha that is my wish.
Let’s climb, let’s climb the tallest tree,
Then go for a swim with a manatee.
Let’s fly, let’s fly with parrots so high!
Above the leaves all the way to the sky.
Let’s rest, let’s rest under some shady tree,
And watch the White cheeked spider monkey.
Let’s sleep, let’s sleep high up in the canopy,
Next to a giant sloth and his family.
Let’s dream, let’s dream of the flowers so bright,
While a million stars twinkle at night.
