All I know of my namesake
is a photograph
a young attractive
smiling woman
with long red hair
holding me
beside it in my mother's handwriting
"...(called after) ten days old"
Grandma says otherwise
That I am named for her sister
who had a twin
who changed her name
from Mavis to Sheila
to not have two in her class
I looked up my name
it is Gaelic in origin
meaning gentle spirit beloved one
to which I add
denied
I think I will be Mavis instead

YESTERDAY’S WISHES
I had my life all mapped out
When young and fancy-free.
I’d play soccer and cricket for England
And the fans would worship me.
I would marry Mavis Watkins,
Who really appealed to me
So I fondly carved our initials
In the bark of the old oak tree.
And, of course, I’d be a millionaire,
Known for philanthropy.
But I was blessed with two left feet.
So sport it wasn’t to be.
Miss Mavis Watkins only laughed.
Now they’ve felled that old oak tree.
And as for being a millionaire,
I’m a few noughts short you see.
So much for yesterday’s wishes.
It’s back to reality
But I have enough to get by on.
And I’m old and fancy-free
Teddy Bear, oh Teddy Bear
You want me to stop trying to care?
hard-headed woman, don’t be cruel
I am stuck on you, like a fool
That weekend we spent in the Heartbreak Hotel
You were my good luck charm, put me under your spell
Remember the Kentucky rain? I told you to follow that dream?
I guess I was not in it, you left me sewn in a seam.
I found myself wallowing in the ghetto with burning love
A hound dog, a fool, a man who has no thoughts of above
My little sister tried to rescue me, you remember Mavis?
She reminded me about our movie called Viva Las Vegas
Anyway, you want me, I am ready to be taken away
If I can dream of anything, it is our bond, okay?
Memories of us is all I have left right now
can’t help falling in love with you since we had Moscow
My new goal is for you to love me tender and true.
We could watch American Trilogy, it is brand new.
- The Villanelle Of David Torment of Mavis’ Chill Autumn Night Plight-
Mavis couldn't stop thinking about the chill
burr, twas just so autumn of a night
But she could never forget the frill
Cold morning, Mavis was shocked by the freeze
She found herself feeling rather light
Mavis couldn't stop thinking about the crisp leaves
Later, Mavis was spooked by a birds bill
She thought the situation had become rather recondite
But she could never be so still
David tried to distract her with his will
Said her mind had become too white
Mavis couldn't stop thinking about the chill
Mavis took action as the bird fulfill
The chill was like a toxic fight
See the bird wind forgot the downhill
Mavis nosedived like a night spill
her mind turned into a plight
Mavis cold and shaken couldn't stop thinking about the chill
But she could never forget the chill
Of a soon to been in days colder cold, cold winter’s months night

My wife has left me for an adverb.
I don't know which one it is!
Is it slowly,quickly, nearly?
Life should not be like a quiz.
She told me that she "nearly" loved me,
When "dearly" was what I had hoped.
Life is full of lost illusions...
How do we 'reaved lovers cope
I think I should have kept it secret,
For now I sit and sadly grieve.
Do you think my wife is cruel?
What a strange excuse to leave!
Would she leave me for a pronoun?
Would she leave for a full stop?
Would I leave you for a quote mark?
Would I fall down in a black dot?
Come back, darling for I love you.
I have learned I must take care.
I will go for grammar lessons.
I am sure I can learn flair!
We can write a poem together,
You can choose the topic,dear.
I will hold my pen and write for
They say true love drives out fear.
Did I fear her? Did I love her?
Was she worthy of my heart?
Did she dislike my hairy nostrils?
Was that why we had to part?
Come back Mary,come back Mavis.
Come back Sunny, come back Sue
Without my wife I feel so lonely.
What is a left man to do?
Shall I vote for love or money?
Shall I throw my self away?
Shall I get a new agenda?
Will a new life start today?
Come back Miriam,come back Sarah!
Where have all the women gone?
Come back Rivka with your grammar.
I can feed you a cheese scone.
I work hard and I can cook.
I put fresh linen on the bed.
I can pay my bills in full.
But without my Love,my heart is dead
The mocking is shocking
Aunty Mavis stopped rocking
Then mourners were flocking
A cavalcade blocking
The streets of South Dorking
Rumours and talking
Like vultures out squawking
Proportionate baulking
Reputation ignoring
So boring, I'm snoring
The eulogy diction
Precise in it's fiction
The perfect life stitched on
Close the sale, get the pitch done
Now the coffin is sliding
The red curtain slow gliding
Velvet box soon residing
On a mantle piece hiding
It's a travesty clearly
Distant relatives merely
Hanging round for a number
Pass the bread and cucumber
Social etiquette blunder
Now poor Mave is asunder
The circus is closing
Uncle Sid is left dozing
With sandwiches curling
The world keeps on whirling
Lesson learned: be a spender
Be a builder, defender
A love fight contender
Not reciever, but sender
All that thrift doesn't render
A relationship mender
Remember, remember
God decides where to send ya
When it's goodnight Vienna

It's true that pork 'n' beans have
chunks that are winning
And Indian spiced pumpkin
sets your heart spinning
Pho bo's delightful, cod soup's disarming
jjamppong, French lentil --charming
Japanese dashi, vichyssoise's sweet
tater soup's smashing, pozole's a treat
Bread and butter with escarole-and-white-bean
bring wonderful company, time and again
Delish Italian wedding soup in Orte
try this and you're a jolly good sport
But cream of the crop, tip of the top
it's Poetry Soup, and there we stop!

I wrote it to the tune of the following lyrics
("It's a Jolly Holiday" from Mary Poppins---
"...It's true that Mavis and Sybil 'ave
Ways that are winning
And Prudence and Gwendolyn
Set your 'eart spinning
Phoebe's delightful, Maude is disarming
Janice, Felicia, Lydia--charming
Cynthia's dashing, Vivian's sweet
Stephanie's smashing, Priscilla a treat
Veronica, Millicent, Agnes, and Jane
Convivial company, time and again
Dorcas and Phyllis and Glynis are sorts
I'll agree are three jolly good sports
But cream of the crop, tip of the top
It's Mary Poppins, and there we stop!")
The Chicken Coop
Down on Farmer Brown’s poultry farm
Amongst the Barns and the old cowsheds no longer used
A bunch of Chickens run around in fear
Dashing about looking all confused
Loud clucking is all you hear
It’s all because a nasty vicious fox is in the neighbourhood
So they are in fear of their lives, panic sets in
Until Mr Brown’s old Alsatian dog Buster
Starts barking making such a din
He is used to scaring off vermin
That is his main job after all
The chickens all feel safe again
Now Buster is there standing tall
Mavis Mr Brown’s lady wife
Comes to collect the morning eggs
Like she’s done so all her married life
The two of them have been together for nearly fifty years
Through thick and thin they have seen it all
But farming is the only life they know
Dealing with problems together however big or small
The Chickens have settled down again
Now the fox has been made to disappear
The old rather large old Rhode Island Red Cockerel
Is now strutting his stuff with his bright colours all on show never fear
He really is a show off and creates a rather loud din
When he crows early when the mornings get light
He wakes everyone nearby with his loud racket
Old Buster gets quite an early morning fright
He would rather be awakened buy lots of Girls and Boys
The local primary school does day trips to the farm
So they can see all the animals and chase the chickens
But Buster always makes sure that they don’t come to any harm
They love it when the chicks have hatched
All running around the chicken run
They squawk and jump around a lot
They seen to have such fun
It’s nice to think that children enjoy
Seeing how a Chicken Farm is run
And how much noise a Rooster can make
From morning to the setting Sun
Life without her
would never be the same
She was the loudest, proudest
most endearingly brash
sugar-sweet and pickle-sour
five-foot-two, force to be reckoned with
that anyone in Yell county had ever met
I confess
I was somewhat obsessed
with Miss Mavis' hair as a child
perhaps it was the fact
that she was the only white woman
I'd ever seen sporting an
honest-to-Oh-My-Goodness Afro
And her hair hadn't always
looked like that
I'd seen photographic proof
pictures from the 60's that showed
her having a mile-high beehive
lacquered with layers of AquaNet
utterly unmovable
much like Miss Mavis herself
Never married, Miss Mavis' house
was unapologetically pink
in varying shades
Pink carpet, wall-to-wall
pink wallpaper, curtains, bedspread
even the ceiling above your head
pink on the tiles of the bath
pink toilet?! pink sink
pink details down to the
homemade tissue-box cozies
Looking for all the world
like the inside of an old lady 'collector's edition'
Barbie house, with rainbow-colored clashes
of crocheted kitsch thrown about everywhere
piles of clothes draped over chairs
comfy but cluttered, it had a crazy air
of outrageous audaciousness
She was more comfortable
being herself
than anyone I'd ever known
so natural
as if to say
who else would I be?
It never occurred to her
to even try
to become someone else's ideal
She was that real
Ron desperately wanted to have a girlfriend
He’d looked after his old mum right till the end
Ron was a tall and extremely attractive guy
Unfortunately poor Ron was so terribly shy
He saw a poster in a window for a single’s night
There’d be lots of ladies, it seemed just right
He phoned the organiser, her name was Eva
She’d greet him at the door; he couldn’t wait to meet her
Eva smiled when she saw Ron’s handsome face
with her skin-tight dress he baulked at her embrace
Her huge breasts looked like two bald headed men
He extracted himself; so he could breathe again!
Tables for two were set up around the room
Scented candles gave off a lovely perfume
Ron sat down at a table in search of a date
Would he be lucky and meet his soul mate?
Big Beryl sat down; she had such bad halitosis
She covered her mouth hoping Ron wouldn’t notice
The moment she spoke poor Ron got a foul blast
When their time was up; Ron moved seats - fast!
Then next he met Ann; she was obsessed with her pussy
He would only eat Whiskas; her Tom was ever so fussy
But any hope of romance they had to defer
As Ron had an allergy to animal fur
Butch Bertha said she preferred women to guys
Ron thought it a pity as she had such lovely eyes
Her mother had forced her to go out that night
They both agreed a date just wouldn’t be right
Mavis nervously sat down, she was painfully thin
From the smell of her breath, she’d been hitting the gin
She said she’d had a tipple to steady her nerves
And she’d got her hip flask if she needed reserves!
Ron began to think speed dating contrary
Then a beauty arrived, her name was Mary
Pretty in pink she stood out from the crowd
She was shy and demure and she wasn’t too loud
Ron hesitantly asked Mary if he could give her a call
And their very first date was at the local dance hall
At the end of the night they shared their first kiss
Now they’re happily married and life is just bliss
