Daughter of the Dark

They said I was too much of night,
too shadowed, dense, and undefined,
as if my darkness dimmed their light—
but they were cosmically blind:
the void is where the stars are signed.

I claim my kinship with the black
that holds a thousand galaxies,
the velvet background, deep and slack,
that makes each burning point a key—
without me, what would bright things be?

The Hubble aimed where nothing showed,
where emptiness seemed absolute,
and found that darkness overflowed
with ancient light en route—
I am the fertile, the hirsute.

They wanted me diluted, bland,
a paleness easy on the eye,
but I’m the space that helps stars stand,
the contrast painting sky—
the canvas every light needs by.

So let them flinch from what I hold:
this body born of cosmic dust,
this skin like space, alive and old,
this darkness they’ve discussed—
I am the frame that beauty must.

Look long enough into my empty—
you’ll see I’m full of galaxies.

Badgering

Don’t pick a fight with a badger
You may think he is cuddly and cute
But he’s terribly strong
He has claws that are long
And a body that’s rather hirsute

Don’t go harassing the badger
Don’t bait him or chase him for fun
For he only eat bugs
Earthworms and slugs
And he lays on his back, in the sun

You’ll not get the best of a badger
He is faster than you are, by far
You’ll not beat him with force
So your only recourse, is
To knock the beast down with your car

So don’t you go badgering badgers
They are one of this country’s delights
Don’t assault the poor chap
Don’t assail or attack
After all even badgers have rights

Beautiful downtown Atlanta
Sunny, blue, cloudless sky
Tall, wide, massive buildings
Window glass glistening in the sun
Beautiful, well-dressed people
Gainfully employed people
Taking care of business people
Running essential errands
Contributing to the community
Pursuing positive, purposeful lives.

I take in the sights, sounds, smells
Sounds of people walking, talking
Engines revving and car horns honking
Smells of restaurants and fast food vendors
Engine exhaust and overheated brakes
Feel of the sidewalk
Under my expensive dress shoes
Heat of the sun on my face and neck
Exciting hustle and bustle
Of a thriving metropolis.

A faint, “Please, sir …” reaches my ears
And a homeless man appears
Dirty, disheveled, hirsute
“Please, sir, could you …”
I divert my eyes, quicken my pace
Ignoring his petty pleas
His weak speech trails off
As he disappears in my wake
Bothersome soul, good riddance!
Why doesn’t the city do something?

Days later the encounter troubled me
I was so proud of the way I handled myself
How easy it is to dismiss a soul in need
Months later the encounter tormented me
Instead of the clever human I thought I was
I had become unfeeling, unkind, uncaring
Years later the encounter still haunts me
Never will it ever happen again
Never … ever …

A band of comrades rather strange I think you will agree
This oddball bunch together shared a commonality…

The panda didn’t pander to the niceties of style
He wore his usual coat which he had done for quite some while

The zebra was a Libra with an eye for what’s in fashion
She loved the skin she’s swaddled in and flaunted it with passion

The badger was a cadger but he didn’t want your suit
He’ll cadge your lunch but he’s content with being so hirsute

The puffin felt like nuffin with his massive beaky nose
But still he kept his chin up for he rather liked his clothes

The magpie wouldn’t lie although he was prepared to steal
His virtues might be fake but his apparel very real

The Penguin was depending on a chance to show his class
His haute couture was something that was absolute top brass

The skunk just stunk, not all the time, but when occasion rose
His looks were good but he was quite offensive to the nose

The orca wasn’t happy to be so far from the sea
Though he was quite a corker in his shiny livery…

So when they met the parrot they tried not to put him down
But one of them just had to say… “Did you come as a clown?”

She thinks in exotic colours
that drip off her tongue
like sharp shining jewels
formed somewhere deep
in the permafrost of her,
the grey matter thrives
in the lava somewhere
rising inside the
lux velvet crimson
pulsing at the core of her,
and births diamonds
that drip off her tongue
like icicles
that could pierce and shatter
a heart or could melt them
just the same

He is like a rhesus monkey
quite short in mind,
small in sound, oh,
but never sound,
the expression on his face,
wanting, eternally perplexed,
the value of his thoughts jumbled,
his darting hirsute mind
running zealous riots around
invisible conquests in
neverending schizoid circles,
rattling the bars of his cage
just for attention,
his words form strangely
for a species trapped
in his own dark age,
each day hardly speaking
but his mind screaming,
passing his hand through
his thinning hair
he is time poor
holding a cup
out for love
to the monkey grinder

all seems lost in poetic translation
yet, it ferments in the daily conditioning,
the small ritualistic routines
regularly delivered in bed before sleep
and upon waking

for one cannot survive without the other;
it’s in the feeding, not in the taking

Valentino, Romance Never Dies

"Valentino, Romance never dies"

Witness the hirsute main cat eloquently honey trapped,
the lap dance laps all the cream for what it's worth,
squeezes life out of the heart into the flipped mind
of Valentino, the bird chirps,

“romance never dies, in truth”
cats kissing caged canaries singing cabaret
Valentino, romance never dies,
not today, never not today, forsooth

Thru Emerald Forest
he was lookin' to make a bed
There in the spindly thicket
softly did he tread
The soft wolf tread”

Premium Member Corny, Hairy and Schmo

Three funny guys, Curly, Larry, and Mo
Slapstick comedians, you all must know
But there are three circus clowns
Who create mayhem and frowns
The crowd calls them Corny, Hairy and Schmo

Corny thinks he's the wily ring leader
Acting as if he's a Walmart greeter
Talking like he's really cool
But people laughed at the fool
Gobbled by the lion called 'Man Eater'

Hairy can be a bear when in pursuit
Got his name from being very hirsute
He was threatened with a shave
If he refused to behave
He bit off his tongue and now is a mute

Sad has become the life of flunky Schmo
He feeds peanuts to monkeys in the show
Since he lost his two friends
Finds himself at loose ends
Three circus clowns; each one was a bozo
