Morning slips in sideways.
Moonbeam dips a cotton shirt
into a bowl of dyes~
colors blooming outward
like shy creatures
learning their names.
She lifts the fabric.
Droplets fall in bright plinks,
each one a tiny skipping stone
across the warmth of July.
On the clothesline,
the tie-dyed shirt sways~
a small carnival of swirl and hush,
its spiral turning slowly
as if practicing
for some future miracle.
Moonbeam hums.
Not a song~
more like a friendly spell
to coax the colors
into behaving.
They don’t.
A streak of green wiggles free
and settles into a shape
that looks suspiciously
like mischief.
Wind arrives,
ruffling the hem
with the politeness
of a guest who knows
it’s early.
The shirt answers
with a soft flutter~
a tiny applause.
By afternoon,
the spiral tightens,
gathers itself,
and glows faintly
as if July tucked
a secret inside it.
Moonbeam takes it down,
presses the warm cotton
to her cheek,
and laughs.
Then she slips it on,
and the swirl settles
against her like a tame comet
choosing a shoulder
to rest on.
Born a runt,
milk-chocolate and bright-eyed,
Fritz von Etgen arrived
with a broken tail
he wagged proudly
before offering his doxie advice.
Outside,
he channeled Dox Quixote,
chasing invisible squirrels
with full-tilt conviction—
a blur of stubby legs
and unstoppable joy.
Inside,
he tap-danced across
Mother’s linoleum floor,
tiny toenails clicking
like a Fred Astaire routine
he never quite mastered.
Half-a-dog high,
a dog-and-a-half long,
he’d race the hallway
and slide out of control—
back end leading the charge
as if it had somewhere urgent to be.
From this small,
big-hearted comet of a dog,
I learned exuberance,
optimism in ache,
and the quiet truth
of love offered without condition.
Fritz taught me
what loyalty looks like
when it has tiny feet
and a tail that never forgot
how to celebrate the world.
Time was when in a golden age begun
I gazed upon an infinite beauty,
and at the heart of her constellation
in a silk cotton dress a vision was she.
I vowed the ends of the earth to follow
your heavenly star wherever it led,
and to sit beside your desk in your glow
but sat my old nemesis in my stead.
Bows in your hair and stardust in your eyes
rushed my pulse to farthest extremity,
but when the Age of Innocence dies
lost is the life and joy you gave to me.
You were my universe my celestial lass
with flowing waves of hair a free spirit -
into its magnetic pull in our earthly pass
I was a flashing comet in your orbit.
Now I feel my pulse and racing heart slowed
since I followed you home down Valley Road.
But I was just a boy and smitten you see
and you were my girl, sweet Beverly.
Bows in your hair and stardust in your eyes
rushed my pulse to farthest extremity,
but when the Age of Innocence dies
lost is the life and joy you gave to me.

1910 Forever
Let’s see now my little fellow
That will be .14 cents for the dozen eggs
Laid fresh today
.04 for the pound of sugar
Sweeter than a sunny day
.15 cents for the coffee beans
And the conversation is entirely free
The year is 1910 again forever
Mark Twain, born when Halley’s Comet came
I remember it like yesterday
We would raft on the Mississippi all day
He went out with the comet when it returned
April 21st. 1910 is when he died
While Halley streaked briefly in the sky
Most men lived to be 47
So we had an extended time to play
There were 45 states back then
I only made .22 cents an hour at my job
Working at the apothecary
And so much fun in the sun
When I was younger
I would run real fast from the store with the goods
Run even faster past the school
Play hooky and get some fishing in
I still live for 1910
If I had it to do over I would do it again
Over the hillsides, together we burned space and time
Galloping with the wind...
Clouds took me by the hand,
Wind took you by the mane
Nothing outside our world could rival this perfect blend
Of motion, devotion, the sunshine and scented rain
I would close my eyes, and trust in the rhythm's rise
O' beautiful creature, your movements touched the very sky
Every stride, would sweep me to another world
Unfurled so far from all my childhood fears
As runaway dreamers,
we sprinted into the future of timeless memory
and heard the infinite past at the heels of your enchanted hoof
Where ancestors once felt this very connection
At one with nature, a blending of what is blessed
In the deep evening light of the first early, wintery chill,
as a comet that shoots through the eye of an in-coming storm
We were crystals, encased in a layer of ice and love
Just a trace of a moon, that sailed between the soft, leaden clouds
In the thrill of the cold, with the glorious snowflakes falling,
and the sight of your warm breath streaming,
there was white drifting smoke, in caress of the moonlight beaming
Indented, undefined, is a trail left behind
Such a moment is proof.... in all legends divine
That when snow falls around the hills, at the end of the day,
Nothing can erase that we passed this way
We were the messengers...that rode with the wind
That the hearts of species as wide as the universe
With spirits connecting two souls as one
Hearts can beat as one....drawn together, like poetic and timeless music
I am part of you....and you are part of me
And that both hearts can feel the same remorse when day is done

In memory of "Queenie".... an amazing Sorrel Quarterhorse,
For the Contest: "PETS", sponsored by Shadow Hamilton 11/13/14
He was reborn & rebuilt
brick by brick from
casted stones
meant to destroy
A heavenly construction approved
by the most high
employed angels from every
corner & angle
high to low
The convoy driven by unseen
forces came in droves
remorseless in their destruction
& unmoved by any attempt
to dismantle
No one holds a candle to his flame
for it burns like earth's core
& he's the apple
of its eye
He's a storm comprised of
winds & rains balanced by wins
and losses
mixed with love
& pain
The foundation was cemented
long before he came
& there were eyes
on the ground
He came in the form of grains
tilled beneath your feet
but is indwelled by
something beyond the
skies
Wise in his ways he grew to be
a builder & destroyer
of structures poorly laid
Towers fall around him like dominoes
in spades when he delivers
food for the soul
Their infrastructures are so wicked
& cold that many inside
no longer feel the warmth
of this abode
They eat fast but are slow to digest
his mission & can't stomach
the wisdom he vomits
The bad apples of this world
make the whole nauseous
but he & those that follow
are the remedy
His presence hits like a comet
shaking this world
& others in proximity
in a flash
Flash flooding minds in mass
he is a predicted natural disaster
elusive in nature
but chained to his
destined path

Parade
At midnight dawn my mind escapes parting the stars
Making my way to a summerland torchlight parade
Where grand marshals of zebra fish
Lead the festival from fiery snow drifts of spun clouds
Making way for tunes and flourishes of the flugel zoots
Dressed in braided gold, sounds of silver reeds giggling om-pahs,
Followed by perfect lines of elephins holding hot air hippos
Rows and rows of dolphettes ride on one horned steads
As whirling woodles swish their skirts to drumline mango tangos
From silver floats rosemaids royal wave to gaping galaxies
As crickethoppers dance the wooly wozzle by the Doodle Loos!
And porpi pass in waves of burnished summersaults
Comet twirlers shout “Hooray!” and clap their stony hands,
Snarfish teeter on the invisible between starstruck novas
Then tap dance in steps of dipsy doodles for eleven moons
Red giants snoozle riding quadra pogo stickes
And throw tickertape confetti – sounding the curly noodles curfew –
Remembering how to hold the magic as this homecoming parade ends
Tap dancing into the horizon's shadow as this long day’s night passes by -
And masquerades of new moons wane in tipsy oodles!

warrior'sphere...
with quill in left
and coin in right
the coale in her heart
became a light
past plus present
" are future sight "
and so she wrote
" it IS a coming...
Spirit Change
for Chance to start
it IS a sum thing
slight sloping arc
dances for a part
... and of the script
it IS!
... off the chart ...
T'waz the Knight
a calling heard
four scales of change
and just as was
this tale of art
more rapid than eagles
called by name...
so fair in hearing
the balance came
on Comet!
thunder rains...
the energy
of an ancient unseen
poured on dawning
from ancestral streams
and so I wrote.
a tale of dreams
They said: be a little more.
Then they stepped in their spaceship.
I never saw what planet they landed on.
Or maybe it was a comet moving quickly.
Be a little more-
Like a five star chef.
Like a drummer in a band.
Like a crowd pleaser.
And a people pleaser.
You’ll never be an astronaut though.
But,
Maybe you’ll burn up in space all alone.
There’s nothing else out there.
They can laugh all they want.
But nothing is audible in space.
Or I could just be:
Friendly.
Kind.
Helpful.
Fluttering around.
Doing little things.
But then they said:
Be A Little More.
The person in that space pod.
Who lost it.
But picked up playing guitar by herself.
Behold, a crack in the sky so far,
Oh !! It's a star, A shining Star,
And it then multiplies...
In the thousand million silver twinkling eyes..
A soapsudded moon with the corally ocean,
Of quiet delivery ozes and rhapsody sun,
With the symphony of rays with the fluted noste,
In white gown, a comet with hopeful eyes towards the land floats..
On the throne of gold with flower of rose, Angels on the earth welcomes comet with the hand close,
People all around with the band of drum, Dancing and singing and enjoying comet's welcome..
With the beautiful smile comet occupied on throne,
Hearing everyone's chaos like all the ones are it's known,
A couple with the teary eyes raised the voice, Of having the gift of blessing of their choice, Demanding the greatest of all from the comet,
Its of girl child... making the urge of blessing to get,
Hearing this prayer comet blessed them with that,
Showers the words on the girl of her all wishes to fulfill yet,
Having blessed with the beautiful gift of love, The couple find happiness in the child all up above..
Suddenly a voice heard up
Oh!! you're going to be late
wake up wake up,
A noise from beside my bed raised up..
I open my eyes with the
smiling face of shy
Oh!! It was the dream which
give my day a beautiful hey..
Seeing me happy make my sisters spy,
Asking me a question of
beautiful dream of mine..
It was you I grasp with hopeful eyes..
A beautiful gift and biggest
blessing of my life..
I whispered to her about being her special,
As she was my prayer of
a gifted sister with hair's curl,
Though it was the dream but far away..
It is true that my sister
is really a blessing All the way....
