If I owned a circus
for you I'd play the clown
(Do jugglers ever tire of throwing up?
Only when they're sick of it.)
or if I had a rickshaw
I could run you round the town
if I were landlord of a bar
drinks would be on me
as proprietor of a restaurant
you would dine for free
and if I had a row boat
I would float you down the stream
but as I have none of these
all I can do is dream

Love is non-mechanical
it doesn’t crank, pinion
or always work dependably.
In cavalier moments, I thought I knew
something of how it all works—
it’s apertures and shafts—
its grinds and reciprocations.
I’d judge it’s motions
work its levers, judge its spins,
and address its slippery angles.
You could call me obsessive
but obsessive people don’t
obsess this much.
You could call me compulsive
but the compulsive aren't
this compulsive.
All I can do is poise, balance
or swipe a little black credit card.
It’s the only magic I have.
I can’t turn bread into wine
or fish into water.
I can’t make the blind walk
the deaf to see or the lame to
taste again.
God reserves some miracles,
keeps them as close to the vest
as cards.
Jugglers work the circus,
mimes thrash to communicate,
and tightrope walkers fall.

The time was a quarter past half past to twelve
on the second from last day at the beginning of the month
in the year twenty-twenty-soon, and all was quietly loud.
The dancing had only just stopped after a night of sitting still
and food piled up on the empty tables.
Jugglers had danced telling their jokes and magicians sung
their impersonations. People mingled on their own while
loners chatted in small groups of large numbers.
The party was starting just how it had ended
and the guests were now arriving after clearing out slowly;
hangers-on and lingerers had been the first to leave
with late-comers having turned up too early
and many of the uninvited empty-handedly bearing gifts.
It had certainly been a night that day, a party like no other!

At the circus were acrobats,
Jugglers and clowns
And dancers in costumes,
All spangled, or gowns.
A walker on tightrope,
The flying trapeze,
With music and acts
Which all ages would please.
There was pink cotton candy
And popcorn for sale
So that joy and excitement
And smiles would prevail.
At the circus were families
Delighted to be
There, like both of my grandkids,
My husband and me.

Surreal expectations in the masquerade world of whimsy
Jokers and jugglers painting selves with utter fun frenzy
The world of fantasy is charged with expectations of madness
I watch the entusiastic players enter without one bit of sadness

Excitement explodes with anticipation today,
Colorful flyers say the circus is coming to town
With animal acts, clowns, and music so gay.
Soon the big top will be going up, a holiday
Only the most disgruntled will wear a frown,
Excitement explodes with anticipation today.
We can hardly wait for sounds of the midway,
Streets come alive with performers renown
With animal acts, clowns, and music so gay.
With the circus comes dreams of running away
It is not a time for anyone to be feeling down,
Excitement explodes with anticipation today.
Inside the tent the band will swing and sway,
Aerial acts, jugglers, and a midget knockdown
With animal acts, clowns, and music so gay.
The barker always takes time to have his say
A lady on an elephant in a lovely satin gown
Excitement explodes with anticipation today,
With animal acts, clowns, and music so gay.

It's the simple things,
That matter so much.
A kind smile a hug, handshake
Or a gentle touch
Gentle is a lovely word
A word that says it all
Gentle words and gestures
Help others if they fall
There is so much in this world
That causes sorrow and grief
We all need a gentle touch
To unite and bring relief
This destructive virus
Has brought things to a head
Some of our fellow men
Have been very easily led
Believing empty promises
Given by those in Power
Not caring about the
Consequences
That worsens by the hour
Suddenly more people
Are looking closer at politicians
Nobody expects them to be
Jugglers
Or magicians
Every thinking man
Realises if we want to put things right
The thing that we must avoid
Is picking up weapons to fight
Fighting gets you nowhere
It makes a situation worse
Gentleness is needed
To remove us from this curse.

The clowns are coming! The circus starts today.
There'll be hot dogs and cotton candy-hooray!
With balloons of every color, puppets and games,
And so many animals that the brave people tame!
I love to watch jugglers and the man jumping rope,
And they'll have lots of fun rides there, I hope.
But mostly I want to see the funny, funny clowns,
With pink hair and red noses, always falling down!

Dear Editor
David J Walker
Dear editor
How is it that you will
Make my thoughts better
Rearranging words and
Changing cadence
At your leisure
The poetry that constantly
Parades between my retina and
Cranium
One pass wonders that I must
Describe going by as if jugglers in
A gymnasium
That might drop the balls
But always catch them before
Any fall to the floor
Of your cutting board
Dear editor
Maybe you can make it better
But for now
Go away and leave me alone

Realized Dream
Sabbatical dreams after quarantine,
Sun hint suitcases in unkempt closet,
Copy of an E-ticket stretches trash,
Cellphone replenished, impotent ere long.
A bowl of flakes stifles in cooling milk,
Sunny nook preps up a stylish bud vase,
The label I hide on the wine bottle,
A meek proxy is flowerless again.
My front door astir, neighbors all gathered,
They told me of the psycho cat's demise,
No tipped refuse cans, injuries, and noise,
Hostilities quell, regrets swells the heart.
Eerie boardwalk creaks near the white sand beach,
Two jugglers feats midst solo guitar strums,
Two cyclist clips between throngs set on foot,
Spellbound scenes of sunbathers plus swimmers.

Riding the Pandemic
Hope resided in the wayward wind,
But dashed when pressured to rush,
Now, it must be gathered again,
Gently, gently, without a push.
Some dwell behind closed windows
While Jugglers play in a measured yard,
Waiting for the morning numbers,
To fall, to fail, to fall very hard.
A twitch, a pain, incites sheer fear,
After innocence entered crowded places,
Behind doors I wait for that ugly ill wind,
To bend to leaders with fearless faces.
Faces with wisdom nor driven by cash,
Who pray at night they will decide for life,
That their power is in caring for all they rule,
And freedom is a responsible right.

Sages and brethren
gather and share
and slowly souls
are bared;
their tempered voices
and quiet eyes
reserved of judgment
with passing smiles,
moments blend
in current trends
opinions wide
and reflections deep;
the concepts
and irregularities
once murky
now clear.
they prioritize
and familiarize
that staunch resolution
of generation net
will remunerate
and illuminate
through the checkpoints
and formal reviews
through the purple curtains
and open stage
nothing tainted
or bitter
left for taste
because its they
who’ll plant the seed,
the captains of commerce
healers and jugglers
the coaches and councilors
negotiators and compromisers
the kings and queens
hustlers and hellcats
(who've all found their way!)
let us tip our hats
and salute them.

Stephanus Marcus Book 1
Canto 6
Verses 4 and 5
Now herald monarch's late arrival nigh.
From east his royal standard shows design.
A lion bold displays from pennant high -
courageous beast, a brave and noble sign.
King's escort knights are seen a riding line,
protective shield defending great their Sire.
Soon castle makes a feast of meat and wine,
Duke Morley's servants whole will never tire.
To please his Sovereign great is Morley's main desire.
Buffoons and jugglers, tumblers, actors make
King Richard’s stay that night a pleasant time.
Then day's new light brings jousting games that take
the stoutest knights that need must be in prime.
On mule clown rides, the winning knight doth mime,
and archer's contest made concludes the day.
A lutist plays a sweet song's tune of rhyme.
Soon priest chants prayer, an eve's melodic lay.
Forsooth, another night king's knights and he will stay
