the walls sweat like old drunks
union correctional, they call it—
correction my ass,
this place was built for breaking.
men bleed here, quietly,
a shiv under the ribs,
a mop bucket wheeled by,
nobody looks too long.
guards strut fat on overtime,
pockets heavy with side deals,
they sell cigarettes like gods
and laugh at the rest of us starving.
chow hall—if you can call it that—
thin stew, one slice of bread,
you walk out hungrier
than when you walked in.
nights are worse.
screams in the dark,
steel on flesh,
the silence after.
the air hums with rot,
paint peeling off like dead skin,
even the cockroaches look tired,
like they’ve seen too much.
and you think—
maybe the world forgot us here,
maybe that was the plan.
the heat presses down like a drunk cop’s boot,
metal fences shiver in the sticky Florida sun,
concrete walls spit their old secrets at you,
black mildew crawls across everything,
like it's alive and goddamn winning.
men with broken teeth laugh in corners,
playing cards with cigarette ashes and dreams,
the guards walk slow, like they own death,
keys jangling like a bad symphony,
boots scuffing, breaking the silence open.
sweat pools in the cracks of your skin,
rats wiser than the wardens,
paint peels in long strips, like shedding snakes,
you hear screams, sometimes,
but mostly you hear the waiting.
somewhere far off, a dog barks—
but not for you, not for you.
“With courage nothing is impossible” Sir William Hillary, a retired soldier and founder of the RLNI
A trawler's in distress at sea
It’s sinking, the crew cannot flee
A mayday message reads “Rescue me”
Their lives are at risk, as you can see
Brave lifeboat men will never tire
From aiding ships, some on fire
To save those at sea they do aspire
These volunteers I much admire
All lifeboat crew are very brave
Each year many lives they save
Like surfers caught by a freak wave
Preventing deaths in a watery grave
How dare they take the words from
Your mouth and the nails from
Your hands
and pass them off as from
their own flesh and blood.
They, who never bled a single drop in the name of others,
have crafted a halo of thorns
and adorn it,
”holy”
(self indulgent, self proclaimed).
What gives them the right
to denounce their equals
and lash the whip over their neighbor’s back?
Don’t they know that every drop of Your blood that touched the earth
sowed seeds of ceaseless forgiveness?
That every splatter ricocheted off the dirt
and echoed the promise “I love you”?
Holy? Wholly?
They know nothing of Your word;
they only twist it to tighten chains
they bind around the black sheep.
Little do they know their wool,
once white in Your hands,
is stained dark as sin.
How dare they take the words from
Your mouth and the nails from
Your hands
and pass them off as from
their own flesh and blood.

Christmas revolution
for problems is solution
an institution
moments were dire
need poems meeting my desire
which would inspire
in their entire
from God poems did acquire
always admire
great things He has done
God said His wheel should be spun
Son came and did stun
My smiles just for the institution,
Which trifles not with constitution:
Brooks not the safest prostitution,
Defaulters starving restitution...
Institution that works with tuition
To minds prepare for intuition,
So that yesterday's Dumped Destitute
Is not today's Bitter Prostitute...
Institution tasting sweet Appeal,
No plans to Sacrosanct Laws repeal:
A body for Routine procreation
Of men with famished eyes on fruition.
That's institution for Rubber Stamp
None other ever served as the Lamp
