Premium Memberunhappy with her writing

Silence of the night split open
Consternated by a clamorous crack
Nettie stared at the paper
Took out an eraser

Evening’s still quiet was horrified
By the fortissimo of thunder
No good.
She began anew

One day there was a rain cloud.

Geraldine and Lampert, Frogs

Geraldine and Lampert, frogs
Rendez-vous'd at dawn, in swamp
Bathing in the warming current
They concur: We must tell stories!

To themselves: ("I'll make one up!")

Geraldine found first a bonmot:
"Last rehearsal, my dear Lampert
Scaled in volume, fortissimo!,
I achieved the height of croaking:
My tone high, my voice sonorous!
I completely aced the chorus
Of the Frog and Pauper, yessir!"

Lampert, all impressed throughout,
(though they sensed some shade of doubt)
Soon had found an anecdote:
"In the farthest parts of pond,
Past the sunken children's ships,
I once came upon cicadas,
And I tell you:
They're THIS big!"

Geraldine laughed ribbitly,
Chiefly, at that Lampert's bragging.
They were having grand a time,
In the morning mire, at dawn!

A mosquito soon flew by,
Caught by both, their tongues collided,
And they blushed and, mortified,
Sighed apologies, with smiles.

Past veneers of insincerity
It was both their clamped desire:
They wanted each to be
the other's froggy valentine.

Fortitude

Foundation of fierce stone,
forging life on its own.
Fortissimo strong heart,
fights for its every part.
Force but with strength of mind,
fiber finer than wine,
from firmest on the vine.

Voice of the Storm

My grandmother said, “Be still. God’s speaking through the storm,”
as she went throughout to see if lights or TV was on.

The white glare was clue to how fortissimo he will speak.
Atomic flash sent you in hiding afraid to take a peek.

He was a kettle drum, a boisterous timpani from the sky,
and with reverberation, he commanded from on high.

Angrier, angrier and deeper were the rolls,
with each one’s vibration delving finer into souls.

His bark was often fearsome, as someone had done wrong,
and oh so still you’d sit if the reprimand was strong.

Twenty minutes or thirty was the duration of the scold.
When doors and windows rattled, you knew you’d been told.

Each time he was less mad and softer were his words,
soon moving far away, leaving sun and song of birds.

After all is said and done a rainbow bright appears,
a promise that God loves us and there is no need for fears.

The Music of Colors

It originates with a blank canvas.
White.
Eerie silence like snow drifting
A fermata.
Silence is music too.

Then a sonata of yellow breaks the spell.
The arpeggio of a laugh
The trill of the buttery sun shinning through a canopy of leaves.

Then red timbre intercedes warming the tone.
The fortissimo of a polished apple
The triplet of a beating heart.

The rubato of blue instantly tones down the orchestra.
A rippling pond plays a chromatic scale
A tear drop strokes a resounding note.

Then,
White again.
A last tacet.

Don't hear it yet?
Look closer.
And listen.

I thought at the time
It was something by Debussy
And every day the same tune
Those same troubled places
DAY AFTER DAY!

After a few weeks it was almost maddening
The easy first twenty measures or so went swimmingly
But then…..
But then a modulation
Difficult chord progressions
The patience of the pianist was amazing
Endless calm repetitions for a few weeks
But then!
Then for days that rush through the easy twenty measures
As though the pianist could hardly wait to drive me mad

Oh that relentless hammering pounding
Such extreme petulance
Unremitting fortissimo against those same difficult measures!

At last I could stand it no longer
Murderous with anger I rapped viciously on the studio door

Well let me tell you…..
SHE was the most ravishing………………………………..

The Tiny Seed Opened

The Tiny Seed Opened

Deep the ponderous silent beginning
Rumbled its struggle to
And break open once upon its lilting

And thought
It lifted high some resounding
Gathered itself by pulse climactic
Loosening
The swollen burst of its making

And deeper driven the slow light emancipating
Rising glory
The exulted splendour
Forth rushing spreads encompassing
In the eternal reaches
The heart beats deliverance
Sings joyous cries

With life eyes

“I am here !
“I have arrived !

The impassioned apex of praise
Fortissimo to the pinnacle creation
The tiny seed
Opened

Classic Grumblings

The piano grumbled at his touch,
Playing fortissimo on command...
Nerves of steel snapping a string.

Ambitious to a fault, practicing the night into alarm,
Lizst spilled from the printed page
Like sour milk for a feral cat.

As he rose from the bench, music in hand,
An audible whispered relief rustled the curtains
And silence cradled the grateful room.

Life Notes On a Scale.

The last note lingered,

Creating suspense.

Leaping the top line,

As one would a fence.

Our song started softly,

Safe and warm.

Then built up dramatically,

Like the midst of a storm.

And now as we wait anxiously,

Watching the keys

Of a big dark piano,

Time seems to freeze.

The ominous pianist.

Who plays out our fate.

Seems to play with our destiny,

As we stand in wait.

That last note with fortissimo,

Toppled the scales.

It destroyed folds of time,

It ripped through the sails.

And poised over the piano,

The "Dark Angel" grinned.

"We have come to a close" he said.

The song, to its end.

Midnight Waltz

Dazzling twilight
Sparkling starlight
Ocher lights all around
Heavens are chanting
Nature is prancing
Anticipating concerto sounds
Zephyr tantalizing
Music harmonizing
Grand flora sway lofty in a row
Nightingale ready
Standing steady
Awaiting her cue from the Maestro
Gesture is given
Moment for singing
She shares an inspirational serenade
Welcome midnight waltz
Tonight, no faults
Night dances in a splendid cascade
Sonata swarms
Tranquility warms
Finale’ is here. Morning’s first light
Evening in awe
Heaven applauds
Bravo. Fortissimo.
Thank you. Goodnight.

Beethoven's Lost Composition

"It happened at dusk, on the eve of my bed
a series of symphonies out of my head
Whistles and pattering, octaves outstretched
Violins wailing and tubas distressed
Starlight shone into my window in white
heaving my breath with this musical sight
leaving my features and shadows in grey
while the melody mastery started to play
First all the strings, then came the percussion
Brass building stamina, with no discussion
Drums most determined and then all at once
the notes of the piano, fortissimo jaunt
Lights popped and fizzled and wrinkled in time
Walls bending backwards a musical rhyme
Bass like a heart beat moving the air
all in the blink of an eye, I was there.
My skin soaked and battered, my eyes shining bright
all concentrating on motion, on flight
After they slowed I beamed with devotion
and stood on my tiptoes, a standing ovation
I've packed solidarity into my chest
to tell you this story, to truly impress
for it happened at dusk on the eve of my bed
a series of symphonies out of my head"
