Literary and Cultural Terms

Masnavi (also Mathnawi): A classical Persian poetic form consisting of rhyming couplets with a continuous narrative. The most famous example is Rumi's Masnavi-ye Ma'navi (Spiritual Couplets), a foundational work of Sufi literature.

A thirst for walking shoes tightens ankle bones –

if for at least one morning
I could parachute out of my own inner attic
to make a soft landing into
lighter than air sneakers.

Alas this world is overrun with footnotes,
warnings that we are not to take anything at all
for granted.

Following the Footnotes

Not for nothing
does the light prick my eyes,
a thirst for walking shoes
tightens ankle bones
that parachute out of an inner attic
landing awkwardly into the open throats
of sneakers
still clutching their tendons.

Out from under a dim tented roof
the world is overrun with Asterix's
small confusing marks
that suggest footnotes and disclaimers,
warnings that you should not
take anything as actually actual.

Strewn on the shoreline, as I walk along the beach
Bits and pieces of life forms, churned up from beneath
Shells, jellyfish, crustaceans, even sea anemones
What was alive yesterday, lays shredded in the weeds

One big stewing pot, perhaps a connoisseurs buffet,
