Effrontery Poems

Diner Might

In nineteen sixty-three, May twenty-eight,
three youngsters in a Woolworths five-and-dime
sat down and asked for coffee. This was war.
In Jackson, Mississippi, way back when,
outrageous things like this riled up the pack.

The photos still exist. You feel the hate.
To ask for coffee, then, was such a crime,
so unacceptable to local law
that men (look at the photos – they’re all men)
could not restrain themselves. Attack, attack!

With ketchup, mustard, butter they went straight
to smear the interlopers with their slime:
what else are coffee-grounds and soda for?
The heroes (in the age of Colonel Glenn,
the Right Stuff mattered) took down from the rack

more gunge. These sons of the Magnolia State
poured vinegar in solemn pantomime
(one wiped molasses on the young man’s jaw).
What caused this ritual? This zoo-like zen?
The guests had the effrontery to be black.

Lincoln Cathedral

Saints, gargoyles, Kings, and imps,
mix, match and mingle.
The beatific and the ogres
hang over slate roofs
like drunks at closing-time.

The stone-masons were subversives,
they must have drank on the job,
yet Remigius de Fécamp, Bishop Alexander,
and St Hugh of Lincoln
all signed off on this unholy riot.
Fire and earthquakes only encouraged
more irreverent flamboyancy.

Gradually `Mary Mother' took over the house
sweeping granite spiders out of the atrium,
boxing the ears of errant goblins,
yet much medieval and Gothic dangle remain.

The effrontery of it all,
all those capricious aberrations,
lead us to believe, not so much in God,
but the sheer immensity of our
rebellious and disorderly minds.

Rara Avis

Back then, time ticked loudly,
clocks ran faster than chipmunks.
Young bones were fueled by green grenades,
I needed speedbumps for my brain.
Mother said that If I lived to be a man
I would be all strewn about
like a crow-pecked scarecrow.
Eventually I discovered
a way to give words a meaning
outside of the hide-bound and buckram dictionary.
Naturally I had to surrender some grammatical logic
for a more fanciful argot.
It was only then that my pipsqueak prattle
had the effrontery to call itself ‘poetry.’
Now in n my grizzly elder state,
I still remain a rare bird,
ever bamboozled by age-worn chalk-talk,
or any jargon
that refuses to jump out of its own skin.

THE WARRIOR

         If Pandemonium prevails all around,
           Public put in chaotic plight,
           arrogance anger in fight,
          disorder and disobedience surround
We need you, the bold warrior
                                                as the rescuer.

             Eccentric erotic steps in effrontery,
            Malice, mischief mended in massacre.
            Outrageous turmoil ignites tormentor
            Indiscipline, incorrigible crisis in territory
We need you, the bold warrior
                                                as the rescuer

           Dedicated devoted hero to volunteer
service to innocent populace at best
neither for fame nor for self- interest.
           Proficient competent fighter to steer.
We need you, the bold warrior
                                              as the rescuer.

Rara Avis

Like all things related to screwballs
and misfits
I was born looking for a word
inside a clock.

Back then, time ticked loudly,
clocks ran faster than chipmunks.
Young bones were fueled by green grenades
plucked from low-hanging life-lines.

I needed words to save the world,
I needed a clock-case to store them in,
I needed speedbumps for my brain.

Mother said that If I lived to be a man
I would be all strewn about
like a crow-pecked scarecrow.

Eventually I discovered
a way to make words bespoke,
to give them meaning
outside of the hide-bound
and buckram dictionary.

Naturally I had to invent my own time-machine,
and had to surrender to a fanciful argot.
For a long while, only blithe revenants
and their little helpers
could read my tenuous tidings.
It was only when my pipsqueak prattle
had the effrontery to call itself ‘poetry’
that some said sadly
that I may be ever so slightly explicable.

Alas mother was right, there is only the clock,
and it runs on mechanical words,
and so I remain a rare bird
bamboozled by age-worn chalk-talk,
a jargon that refuses
to jump out of its own skin.

Homophobia

Firstly, it's a manufactured word to suit
the gay community - I'm not impressed;
let's say fifty one per cent are against,
forty five per cent are just not bothered.

I make no apology, my entitlement,
some friends I have are gay, no big deal,
although sometimes I wonder about mindset,
theirs, not mine - is it really oh so fine?

Someone came to my car window, I said: 'No,'
why should I be subjected to such effrontery?
They say that it's 'normal' in the animal kingdom -
animals have their own codes, no human knowledge.

I have my own code, even tho' laws have been made,
consider your position, a phobia doesn't mean I'm afraid.

The Satiric Warrior

THE SATIRIC
        WARRIOR
Let us sing a song for a hero
The warrior from satiric battles so
.
With a well balanced ball-pointed sword
He became a victorious battle lord
.
St. Philip's Central School, his first war.
Like the Napoleon Bonapart's folklore
.
His name, the divine battle in him
Made him, Chinualumogu a laser beam
.
Chameleon believes in unity
That's why he wears his friends colours truly
.
To fight for his people and culture
He risked his scholarship and his future
.
Left medicine for English, and History
Just to speak-boost the people's effrontery
.
"More important than my family
Is my ancestral family only"
.
Fighting the race of the white-skinned folks
In the fields of racism's talks
.
Fighting the Nigeria government
In the fields of corruption's impairment.
.
Today, he rises in our history
As all his obstacles sing his victory.

Onward Christian Soldier

a cavalcade wept ashore with frenzy like a beastly bus
oblivious of tribes who blissfully dealt without a fuss
triangulated within an ever narrowing pen
contaminated, decimated, eradicated “red” men
once a collection of indigenous separate “nations”
plucked by invaders who usurped america as their den
releasing poison couched as religion into the air
which indignities true colors became readily clear
when europeans “discoverers” fomented war-fare
to those who found themselves in deadly cross hair
every inch of “new world” grimly rustled in every lair
with deadly piping hot metallic bullets with near
with unfamiliar customs on par with a satyr
without means to escape any direction they did veer
cohesion of unity did annihilate without a trace
that belonged to those who stood apart as separate race
paraded as “exotic specimens” in some faraway place
bandied about as if some rare refined silken lace
of their rightful home by chicanery tactics base
to banality, effrontery, hostility though dined
with travesty from Europeans whose dreams lined
against so called original occupants who got maligned.

A Jealousy I'M Proud To Own

Your poetry is dark, Mark Strand.
I want to emulate it as I hate
each line. I want to cast it out,
then hold it to my breast
as the defeated one who knows
I could have said it first
had I retreated into selfhood,
placing honesty in all effrontery
and drawing forth the man
who dips into the soul
and finds his art.

I didn't do it.
The gold I see encrusted there
forever lies in your domain.
Every plain-scribed thought remains
your own no matter myriad the times
I have encountered it before,
for words fall on their knees
when spirit rules and art
is not contrived but flows forth
from its source.

I read these washer-woman words
with more than admiration, Mark.
I fondle them, enshrine their pages
with repeated reads, and you
will understand I fondly hate them
as they trace the highways
that a poet laureate selects,
the curves and scenic stops
along the way that I
shall never see or share.

Emotions spray isn’t particular to a selected few
but self control reigns supreme if
the mind’s lock succumbs to the key of maturity.

A negative impact steams out of the boil of behaviour when;
the eye swells through the accumulating poisonous fluids of greed,
the hand finds cover in gloves of selfishness,
mentality drinks the wine of sentiments,
appetite suffers an absolute anarchy from instincts,
anger smokes in a mind highly inflammable
and hunger trespasses the out of bounds
encouraged by the effrontery of hormonal quests.

Character and attitude have no race, tribe or fraternity
hence human exhibition is distinctly individualistic
and the DNA of actions, solely created by its carrier.
but like a group of similar bones with same skin cover,
one can stand tall to be notable like the fore-finger.

The Bridal Sojurn

THE BRIDAL SOJOURN
Like an American spy I have always been looking around
Wandering around the downtown
Not because of my lost goat
Nor because of my missing boat
But obviously I am the to-be groom
Who has been left in the gloom
I have built a house with big rooms
This has been a lone boon
That I got from my age-long boom
As a to-be groom
I have searched all the pages in the books
And checked all cranny and nooks
In search of the damsel
That would make my relatives dance well
Though I have not been assured
That her love would get me insured
Against adultery and lusty effrontery
But I believe in fluke
That is why I won’t give up to a crook
And rather challenge her with a hook
I saw this template on Google
And this really makes me giggle
Father didn’t stop to niggle
But I let them realize I’m nimble
To find my ravishing bride
That has a picturesque dimple
That is devoid of pimple
And make me forget that I was single
Even if I can still mingle
With ladies that are ostensible
I know her thinking is plausible
And her reasons are tangible
To let them realize we are compatible
Because our union is defensible

Premium MemberPersonification of a Louse

I must give you a very stern warning:
Don’t ever call me at three o’clock in the morning.
You certainly have some unencumbered effrontery.
Why at such an inconvenient time do you want to pester me?
Normal people find the time to sleep at that hour.
How would you like to take a sulfuric acid shower?
I know where you live, and I will come over to your house.
An ingrate like you is the personification of a louse.
