Stimulation

Hot coffee
black coffee
really has the means
when I sup but half a cup
to make me feel
quite full of beans
only one requirement tho'
no decaf if you please
and altho' born in Kenya
where the coffee grows
why it's called
'a cup of Joe'
I'm sure I do not know
but
hot coffee
black coffee
is the best ammo
when I do a mug or two
to give me the right
get up and go

Premium MemberWhite Noise with Bangs

She smiles like a mission statement—
all vision boards and decaf compassion.
Says she’s rooting for you,
then plants rumors like heirloom tomatoes:
carefully spaced, watered just enough
to grow wild in someone else’s yard.

You know the type.
Squeals I'd never
right before she does—
but soft, with mittens on.
The kind of sabotage that
leaves no fingerprints,
just your name
smudged under a headline
she pretends not to read.
It's embarrassing.

She curates concern like a lifestyle blog.
Screenshots your grief as hers
for group chat empathy drills.
Leaves the door open on purpose,
then texts you
how sorry she is
that someone let the cold in.

You never asked her to stay.
But you notice—
she always stands in the same frame,
just close enough
to gobble up the good lighting,
to crop you out.

Premium MemberArguing With Inanimate Objects

Arguing with inanimate objects
Can be very distressing
To them
My Roomba drove itself down the stairs
The Keurig switched to decaf

Alexa told me where to go
Siri filed for a restraining order
My iphone deleted the “find my phone” app
My robot pet brought poop into the house
When I hit the “autopark” button
My car parks itself around the corner from the house
My security cameras only watch what I’m doing
My drone took off with a raven

I googled “How to get rich”
It told me to sell my organs

I checked my heart rate on my apple watch
It said “faster – you’re still breathing”

While hiking my phone beeped
The message read…
You are entering a dead zone…STAY THERE.

Glimpse Into The Writer's Head

A girl rotting
A girl alone

She is still for hours
She is still forgotten

A girl downtrodden
A girl down on her luck

She is drunk on misery
She wakes hungover on woe

A girl runs on decaf
A girl sleeps away

She is ruined by the hope
She is stuck on pause

A girl with thought and drive
A girl without a way

She is shell of routine
She is but a memory

A girl running out
A girl ill with frustration

She is I
She is me

Premium MemberAre These My Golden Years

Arthritis dictates much of what I do,
Relenting sometimes, though. Then I will be
Elated as I feel my strength renew,

Take walks pain-free and do, with energy,
Housework without completely wearing out.
Each week I see more wrinkles and gray hair.
Sometimes my mirror makes me want to shout~~
Enough complaints! At least, my head’s not bare.

My bathroom trips are more than in the past.
Young people, I know you don’t understand!

Glad my home’s small, so I can get there fast.
On outings, restrooms are in high demand.
Last year the doc increased my BP med.
Decaf might help, but caffeine’s such a good
Elixer. It clears cobwebs from my head.
NO caffeine makes folks eat more than they should!

       ***********************

Year’s end approaches. Thoughts of coming days
Excite me. More than ever, love of friends
And family sustains me. God, I praise.
Redeemed, I’m Heaven-bound when life here ends.
So, I conclude there’s GOLD in life’s late phase.

Dalmatian diva dressed deliberately for dinner
Displaying delicate dainty polka dots, to try and look thinner
Drinking deliriously delicious decaf, starring at a Doberman grinner
Deciphering a designer’s dreamy design during her delectable dinner

Premium MemberIf I Were Your Love

If I were your love,
All of the loves that I experienced before you appeared
Would not compare to the love I'd gladly offer and give to you.
You'd be my pearl of great price; all others being forsaken.
In sickness and health, poverty or wealth, you'd always be mine.

If I were your love,
In the night when the moon is bright,
I would cuddle you up close and tight.
Each day, I would rise before the early light
And gaze as you lie there with never a fright.

If I were your love,
As an early riser, I would have my coffee alone;
Instant decaf, mildly brewed, and never strong with
Two spoons of cream barely sweet; and as the sun begins
To rise, I'd begin making your coffee and breakfast with
Foods that You most delight.

If I were your love
With dedicated devotion, I would serve you breakfast in bed
Followed by chores that best suit your needs. You'd know
A mature and pure love for you, shown with, not just the
words of "I love you", but you'd see and feel the love.

Breakfast Time Through Two Lenses

As a young child
breakfast time was my favorite time of day
Mommy hovered over the flaming stove
as she sizzled a bundle of my favorite meals
tuna, corn beef, sardines , and steamed sausages
served with a side of white grits
dashed with warm butter as gold as a coin
I sat at the table and gobbled down the meal
like a contestant in a pie eating contest!

Fast forward to the present day
as I matured into adulthood
I no longer have the craving desire
for this type of cuisine,
eating grits now gives me
the feeling of indigestion
forcing my stomach to spew it out
like lava from an erupting volcano!
Now I just stick to enjoying
a cup of brewing decaf coffee as hot as the desert
with sprinkles of succulent sugary powder
and a bowl of chicken souse seasoned in high sour lime
and bird peppers as spicy as chili
with light floured coconut Johnny cake!

He Came At Me

My heart's hinged door forcefully burst
But the instant coffee I owned was decaf!
My eyes died, parched of thurst,
My tearless decision was just to laugh.

These beatings last forever,
But I find your love is pain.
Drag me up the stairs; together...
Black eyed me, bruised with you again.

Hobbling always, resilient is me.
Keeping each beat with heartfelt rapidity.
Time never winds down, failing to free me.
So blowing blood out my nose~ I'm endless stupidity!

No More Coffee For Me

No More Coffee for me

I used to love coffee
Still do
But coffee
Well it is has turned on me

When I drink coffee
While watching the morning news
I become jittery, nervous
Crazed in a very bad way
As I drink cup after cup

I shifted to decaf
But coffee still found a way
To take over

And soon I was once again
A coffee addict

Today I gave it up
Again
Perhaps this time
I will succeed

Coffee has been a good friend
But enough is enough
Time to free my mind
From its cruel lovely grip

Premium MemberAnother Kind of Virus

There's another virus going around.

Flustered by everything COVID-19;
I am grateful I still have a job,
but grumpy I have to drive there in the rain -
I need to get to the fast lane or I'll be late...

What's this?
A driver slowing down to let me in their lane
with a smile and a friendly wave.

A news report of teenagers with cellos and violins
playing a quartet on the porch of their
"self-isolating" elderly neighbor.

A good Samaritan
giving away toilet paper
to whomever has need.

The new guy in our coffee co-op
making a pot of decaf while
grinding beans for the high-octane pot AND
cleaning out the sink.

A friend sending out an email
asking How is everybody?
Knowing we're all hanging on by a thread

Please infect me with this kindnessvirus
I want to pass it around

What We Eat

The vegans eat their vegetables,
The carnivores their meat.
The gluten-haters stay away
From foods containing wheat.

The carbohydrate shunners
Won’t eat pasta, cake or bread
But can eat a pound of bacon,
Not the healthiest, instead.

Organic fruits and veggies,
Plus organic milk and cheese
Are believed to lengthen life, although
There are no guarantees.

There are those who don’t eat dairy;
There are those who don’t eat pork.
There are some who just use chopsticks
And reject the knife and fork.

There are decaf coffee drinkers;
Others guzzle their caffeine.
Everybody has a preference
When it comes to their cuisine.

So I’ll eat the foods I relish
And you eat the foods you choose
Since we both have the option, when offered
One another's repast, to refuse.

Who Would Have Thought
By Valerie D. Staton

The first time we met I was a bit scared
To be in a union unequally paired

You smoked cigarettes, I did not
You liked the cold weather, I liked it hot

You drank alcohol, I drank decaf tea
Who would have thought you’d be the one for me?

Your clothes were unkempt and so was your hair
My friends were not fond of you, but I did not care

Shameful how people look outward not in
I saw a beautiful heart beating within

Only I could see the gem standing there
A gift that the Lord decided to share

We’ve never argued, nor have we ever fought
An oddly matched couple...who would have thought

Miss You - 3-12-18

Do I miss you
After all you were
Sugar sweet
On my teeth
Just your name was
L S D
Had me tripping till I’d fallen
I guess I fell in love
I guess I miss that
I guess I miss you
But maybe you’re not you
Not the sugar sweet
Babygirl
Honey on my lips
You used to be
I don’t want you know I want you then
I miss the you that used to be
The you that kissed me and
Played with my hair
I miss the you that you used to be
Or maybe I miss the me
I was so
Joyful
L S D
Tripping plummeting
Straight through your heart so
In love
With you, I know, but
I loved how it made me
How I’m not now,
Not anymore
I guess I miss that
How I was when
Well, you know,
You
Or maybe
I’m lonely — God, I’m lonely
Tired of the gravity that’s been
Pulling me down
And my friends they’re not here
They left with their yous, I guess
Walking zombies
Decaf hearts
Tightrope walking blind
Just pull me into the sunset
— Or the sunrise;
I like it better
And I’ll have my you
And maybe you’ll have yours
Too

Premium MemberThe Rescued Life

Smack me with your caffeine stick,
Hit me out of the park,
From the sleepy mire thick,
You kindle my life's spark.

A cuppa joe or just a cuppa,
Breakfast, lunch and even suppa,
Grind your beans into my brain,
Take away the mortal pain.

Decaf - such a dirty word,
I pity those from whom it's heard,
With a bun or coffee roll,
Bless you, cup, you've saved my soul.

Mocha java dirty mud,
I'd rather have you as my blood,
Now that I can actually think,
Do your due, brew me some ink.

Brashly dark, not creamy soft,
Raise my flattened mind aloft,
I take you hot, no need for ice,
Show me shores of paradise.
