Holiday time took us down the Med
to spend it in lovely Cyprus no less
there the sun did shine every day
shorts and t-shirt was the regular dress
On arrival, I had a bit of a scare
couldn't find my passport was in a panic
finally after 20 minutes found in moneybelt
then peace prevailed was no longer frantic
There were many popular places to visit
the tomb of the kings was there for one
the mosaics rediscovered centuries ago
a trip to the Troodos mountains in the sun
Get the local bus into Pafos for 1.5 euros
lovely walks along the splendid front
nice shops to investigate their wares
many cafes to enter pick from the hunt
Just want to lie in the sun
at the beach or by the pool,
a week went in all too quickly
find passport! catch flight! stay cool!
(We spent a lovely week a few weeks ago on the lovely island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean so this is my poetic thoughts on our visit. )

Days are short and nights are long,
We no longer sing the summer song.
As the nights draw in, log fires burning,,
Going out at night has lost it's yearning.
At home we can enjoy our meal,
Cooked in love, it has its appeal.
Both now sated, a glass of wine,
In front of the fire we rest supine.
The coldness of night, the warmth of day,
It is winter here and, each in its own way,
Is a Cyprus Delight.

I know an isle, to Love the long-lost home,
the sea's white waves, the sun's hot rays caress.
Necessity, that most cruel fate of all,
has banished Love, yet may not quite suppress
the present fragrance of a sacred past.
On Trodos, pines still keep their sweet incense.
The while it lasts, no honeymoon can end.
Oh do not mark the boot-prints in the sand,
but hope that Love shall one day conquer all.
Even the sea, long shines the patient sun.
What mars when Love, long absent, claims her own?

Dedicated to Eileen who has expressed her love for this beautiful isle.....
Roman mosaics and Phoenician tombs
Byzantine castles and Venetian walls
Pine clad mountains and valleys full of blooms
Windswept wild beaches raked by sudden squalls
Vineyards lay across the land like green shawls
An island of custom and tradition
Yet this stunning land lies in partition
Churches to the south and northward mosques lay
A land in need of redefinition
For reconciliation people pray

We've got flowers and trees and Bees that sting
and quite a few other creepy crawly things,
We got rocks and weeds,a little waterfall,
And a nice place to sit and view it all.
Am I homesick for England? Not one bit,
I'm here until God says it's time to quit!

Went out to the overtures heralding a stormy day,
The cacophony of thunder and lightning display.
Rivers of rain came pouring down from the hills,
Overflowing from the drain and the gully.
As folk to shelter they quickly did scurry.
Snow on The Troodos, so I was told,
Will help fill the dams as the winter unfolds.
Cosy and warm as I gaze outside,
A mug of mint tea by the fireside.
The wind shakes the trees with it's howling cry.
On this stormy grey day, with my book, I'll get by.

Life in Cyprus,
Idyllic I would suggest,
For each day is filled with
Everything we hold dear.
Inspired by good friends,
Nice people we meet
Coming from all different places,
Youngsters, to our delight are
Pleased to sit and chat with us in the
Relaxed atmosphere of the Taverna at night
Under the soft light of a
Star studded sky.
This is my Cyprus.

In a land that boasts
You can be warm as toast,
Because the sun shines here,
Every day of the year.
Today the opposite is true,
My fingers are turning blue.
The heaters on high while I watch TV,
Bed is inviting it seems to me.
Sitting here wrapped up tight,
In a sleeping bag, what a sight!
Hot water bottle ready and hot tea too,
I'm off to bed before I get Flu!

Open the eyes of my heart
As open as the space
In the Leland Cyprus
Let the gap see truly thee
Open the eyes of my heart
Let the spirit flow inward
Filling to the overflow
Let me have compassion
Open the eyes of my heart
Let the spirit flow outward
With love, tenderness
Caring and concern
Open the eyes of my heart
Seeing all the world's wrong
Spreading thy healing message
Love is the key for you and me
