Canadian Willie Amos
Was so eager to be famous
To prove he's no prude
He zoomed in the nude
And peed to confound the shamus

At the heart of the gristmill in common
is the millstone:
A matched pair of matched round stones, one over the other.
Below is a bed-stone base, abeyant and prone
Above is the runner whetstone,
honed to grind grain
to grist fine flour.
The bed-stone 'tis convex,
the runner stone 'tis concave,
together they form a grasp cup of hands
channeling the ground grist
out as grain is crushed
and ground to powder flour.
The power of the gristmill
is a treadmill water wheel.
Water in common,
driving a gristmill in common,
to the tragedy of the commons.

(To a wonderful Aussie officer who worked with us, who we all sorely miss -he's back in Australia)
A spirited Aussie in a fast thing,
slicing through air in a wild land in which renewed comfort is found.
Gone are the days in the land much foreign to his own,
toiling for months to remedy intricacies reigning a thousand years.
A smirk, a hat, blinding wit, and a captivation defines him,
to the ones who sadly he left behind…

I suddenly remember! Here!
These very commons in which our physics class today
collects tiny manifestations of the laws that govern Nature
in the sunlight of the late morning
smiles and laughs beaming from every face
Yes, here, not even one week ago
club music thumped through the empty midnight
bodies were packed tight, sweaty, bouncing to the beat
dreams were made and broken just as quickly
(mine was recycled)
a plastic punch cup, kicked, skid across the floor
rolling to a stop in a shadowy corner of the night
where even now, in the light of day, students’ works of art
are illuminated, set on display for passersby
But look! Now tennis balls bounce across all-color tables!
A blue metal chair set atop!
Will they collide?
