Capuccino Poems

Costa Lamento

Same old routine, same venue too
We join the queue, I order
Flat white for her with fern motif
Tan crema round the border
For me a capuccino, large
With sifted chocolate powder
Baristas all look younger now
The music slightly louder

We grab our favourite corner seat
Our meal, the usual fare
Two toasties filled with ham and cheese
A Chelsea bun to share
The great machine behind the counter
Clanks and slurps and hisses
And suddenly I recollect
Those first exciting kisses

Brunette has given way to grey
Her voice a little gentler
She takes my hand and thanks me for
The flowers that I sent her
Her smile, so sweet, improved with age
Her wise and loving eyes
Close tight before she takes a sip
Leans back a bit, and sighs

We laugh and talk the years away as if
Time was suspended
Why did I let her slip away
It's not what I intended
But too late now to make amends
However we construe it
We took a fatal turning and
We well and truly blew it

Hidden Gem

For a long time my brother in law,Jim, and I ,  were not close.  Politically,   I was mostly liberal and he, a strong conservative.  Some say politics doesn't matter, but in our case it seemed to color our personalities.

Then, a  few years ago after we had shed our political skins as times changed, and suddenly became open to each other.  Sure, shared interests but more as we grew  older, not quite affection but a quiet understanding. . .

spring run
his shadow
always behind

After I was placed in adult care, he visited me several times a week, usually with a
capuccino in hand which he knew I loved.  I learned respect and admiration for the real Jim.  He had a  hidden depth that was not easily expressed or perhaps easily understood.

so clear
stone bridge

I remember from geology class: Scratch any stone to see its true identity.

dark river stone
doused in light
sun colors

I felt that in the end he was turning to gold though I wonder if  he knew. . .

My Everything

Capuccino tinted dermis
Button nose
Velvet strokes
Soft apple cheeks
Plump
Pink
I watch and think...

Forehead
Framed by feathers of slate
Tresses of ash
Each decadent lash
Never ending
Sweeping long
Across each almond
Eye blink
I watch and think...

A nest of hair
Powdery black
Waves of dark
A cushion of black ink
I watch and think...

Sparkling glitter drips from those eyes
You grip me with your ties
A smile to mesmerize
The perfect sunrise
"I love you Mama"
A cheeky wink
I watch and think...

Your laughter infects the skies
Cloudy blues turn to bright highs
A voice that heals
A void that fills
Sweet nothings
That's the thing

I watch...
I think...you are my everything

Barista

The foam from the Macchiato,
goes well with a dash of cinnamon,
Or an espresso made long or short,
depending on what mood you're in.

A caffee latte for on the go,
with a biscotti goes quite well.
Enjoy our capuccino con panna,
you will never forget the smell.

If you are looking for a kick,
a ristretto is what you need.
A wake up call to start the day,
that will bring you up to speed.

Mocha chocolate in a milkshake,
for the sweet tooth connoisseur.
The crushed ice is at the bottom,
do not forget you have to stir.

I am always at your service,
for your afternoon time java fix.
So bring yourself a book and relax,
and try this exotic coffee mix.
