Among hills Apache red
Where damas and vaqueros
Built up a homestead
Past the mercados
And hills with a vague past
Running aside the mission
Its white walls chaste
In the glow of the noontime sun
Past a dreamy mountain range
And several places where in brief
There was a Butterfield stage –
Runs a highway through my life
And whether bathed by the sun
Or a cloud of headlight glare
It continues to function
And remain my anchor.
All through the last winter
I sat on my own
Playing Cushie Butterfield
On my xylophone
I tried it as a two step
I tried it as waltz
Its not easy on a xylophone
To avoid playing shmaltz
But I got it just perfect
It sounded a treat
So I played it on my xylophone
As I walked down the street
And a busker with some bagpipes
Joined in to play with me
And we played Cushie Butterfield
That busker and me
And folk stood there just clapping
And tapping their feet
And soon there was a party
All down that long street
But it wasn’t for long
Were we on our own
For we soon heard the sound
Of a tenor saxophone
And we all played Cushie Butterfield
And it sounded just great
Then the saxophone player
Was joined by his mate
Who played very jauntily
Casting notes afar
Playing the melody on
His 12 string guitar
And we all played Cushie Butterfield
With verve and good cheer
And oh how we wished
Cushie Butterfield could hear
Cushie Butterfiekd - 19th Century Geordie Folk Song
Sammi was crushed in snow and ice,
Under the beam of a forklift truck,
Being driven by her dad on his farm,
Such that her back did break, no luck.
Her physio at Glasgow’s Southern,
Sent her to top Stoke Mandeville,
Because she showed interest in,
Sports and exercise’s cool bevel.
“I thought I’d be in a bed forever.
So, then…a wheelchair was amazing.
Sounds strange, but I was so happy.
Then to find [myself competing]
in sport in my wheelchair, [mega],
has just been incredible, [indelible],
Sport has helped me [lots], hugely,
Helped me to accept it really. [Able].”
Before the accident Sammi played,
Hockey, did gymnastics and ballet,
So disability sports just means that,
She can continue on with her way.
Sammi met Jo Butterfield, club throw,
Whilst in Stoke Mandeville, a click,
And the two of them have become,
The leading Scots athletes thick.
In Swansea at the 2014 Europeans,
Sammi returned with three golds,
One for the 100m, one for the 400m
And another for the 800 metre’s folds.
Then in 2015 in Doha, the Worlds,
She bagged a bronze this time,
And was a star at Rio de Janeiro -
She intends on marathoning fine.
Jo was born in Yorkshire, England,
In 1979, but moved up to Glasgow,
And in 2011 saw a spinal tumor take,
So embraced fully the Spinal Games.
Thrown into wheelchair rugby brutal,
She became the Crushers vice-captain,
And began in 2014 a career as a F51,
Throwing the discus and club objects.
She did well and set a ER of 17.68m,
Then in Perth got PBs of 9.79 & 19.50,
Where she took home the gold medal,
In both of these rugged muscle events.
In 2015 busy Dubai beckoned, Fazaa,
She did the F32, the F33, and the F51.
She won the discus with a 8.87m throw,
To set a new ER, striving further on.
And she also won the club, totally cool,
With 19.69m to take her home the gold.
Olympic Park in London made 21.5m,
Where she saw her competitor’s backs.
Indeed, at the Worlds in Doha, Qatar,
Jo went on to throw 21.4m, a CR made,
Which relegated her rival into second,
So she’ll be at Rio for both the events.
