You were there
before memory.
Before voices had names,
before light had meaning
you were there.
Brown as warm bread,
soft as a breath held in sleep,
you waited.
And I held you.
You were there.
Through the quiet nights
where shadows danced on walls
and thunder cracked the sky like glass
you never blinked.
You never left.
Your button eyes
have seen more tears
than the stars above my window,
but never once
Did they judge
You were there.
When the world got louder,
when I got taller,
when toys came and went,
you stayed.
Your seams grew tired,
your fur thinned in patches,
but your silence remained faithful.
You are more than stuffing and thread
you are the weight in my arms
when I didn’t know
how to hold myself together.
You were there.
I’ve outgrown so much
shoes, stories,
even people
but not you.
You still sit on my shelf,
crooked ear, familiar face,
like a small, quiet lighthouse
for every storm that might return.
You were there.
You are still.
And somehow,
you always will be.

The Brown Bear
The brown bear doesn’t like his territory to share
If you happened to wander in you would err
If you shouted at him, he would not easily scare
But promptly dine on you without a care

brown bear had a caused a dare
I heard his name was rather rare
and his clothes closets were completely bare
but his honey-ladened food was everywhere
don’t come then said my brother Lair
I’ll face him alone, if you have a scare
I did not know what to think of the brown bear
His eyes caught mine in a scary stare.
bear said I guess you are here because of the dare
I do not know what happened next for I left Lair
running as if I were being chased by the bear
Who was now playing chess with my brother Lair

Brown bear moved to Alaska to play in the snow.
You will see him from time to time, said my cousin Moe.
He does not blend in like the polar bears do.
There he is now, in a pile of the wet sticky goo.
Brown bear waved from behind a snow hill.
Snow stuck on his fur, which gave him a thrill.
Icicles on his nose made him happy indeed.
No hibernation for him now, there is really no need.

The brown bear
During Yeltsin years when he sold Russia down the river
People in the west loved the brown bear
we patronized the Russian as vodka swilling village idiots.
The cuddly bear died, and a steely-eyed fox to the helm
and the Russians was no longer cuddly.
The Russian federation was no longer willing to play
the game ascribed by the western press no longer willing
to be pushed around and laughed at.
Putin, the fox, turned Russia into a modern state that has
a modern army that is powerful if stirred by the west.
Russia wants peace but does not like the encroachment
by NATO/US, that is like Indians in western movies
encircling the wagons.
Putin, president of Russia, vilified by the western media
and the EU, ain’t forgiving
even the capitalists know this and stalk carefully.

Beautiful butterflies bewitch baby brown bear,
Beside blessed bluejays bobbing between blueberry bushes.
Bedazzled bumbling bear brokenhearted,
Because butterfingers breaks big branches.
But by beginning brisk bravery,
Baby brown bear's behavior benefits beaming biodiversity!

Big Brown Bear
You care
Care about people
Care about their struggles
Big Brown Bear
You dare
So much giving
So little taking
Big Brown Bear
You are rare
Loved by everyone who meets you
Blessed are those who cross path with you
But Big Brown Bear
One just can't bear
Digesting complicated things no matter how logical
When they are supposed to be simple
Big Brown Bear
Please stare
Stare into the hearts of the people
Instead of staring at the self made puzzle
