Strange thought just entered my head
What if I critiqued my own poems
D'ya think I'd really be tough on myself
Or would you detect a slight bias tone

Tried using the criteria of accepted norms
I'd be down at the bottom, no bones
But for humorous verse and originality
Call me Oliver Wendell Holmes

First I followed time honoured patterns
Of poets that have gone before
But that's not what makes a poet of note
Originality is what raises his score

So go ahead and break all the rules
That have been in place forever
Develop your style of creative writing
And be proud of your endeavour

A Message of Love From Whitney

Every time you listen to my songs
I will be sending you a great big kiss
And though I moved beyond your sight
Know all of you I will surely miss

Always remember the joy and laughter
That always found a home within my face
Always think about all the wonderful times
I took your mind and heart to another place

Please try never to shed unhappy tears
Each day my love ones while I am away
For there will be a time in the near future
When again in each others arms we'll stay

And tomorrow morning when you think of me
About the love you always saw in my eyes
Remember wherever you might be in your life
My spirit will never again leave your side

My family I miss all your hugs and kisses
Which I will always treasure, and I am sure
One day soon again we will laugh and sing
Together in heaven with our precious Lord.

A poem i was moved to write for Whitney, a beautiful
spirit, while listening to Stevie Wonder sing 'Love is in need
of love at here funeral!

Angels Among Us

Angels are among us – in many different forms,
The flowers in the garden or a rose among the thorns.
We may never know where they are watching from,
But they are there from dawn to setting sun.

They may be a friend that calls to check on our day,
Someone who offers a smile or has something good to say.
They may be a warning sign placed in our way,
A hand to hold while a child is at play.

When in life the storms may come, and destruction all around,
They bring us peace – place our feet on solid ground.
God sends the Angels to help – no matter how big or small,
God sent the Angels to pick us up whenever we may fall.

Some times our days are long – and our prayers to God we pray.
But it’s good to know that God hears, and the Angels are on the way.
There is nothing that God cannot do for us – if we place our trust in Him,
For all we have to do is pray, and the Angels He will send.

So remember that God has a special Angel just for you,
And no matter where we walk – God and our Angel will see us through.
There are Angels among us – A blessing send from God.
To help us and hold our hand no matter where we trod.

You Take My Breath Away

As beautiful as you are
you make the sun cry
when he slips away at sunset,
because he does not want
to share your beauty with
the moon and the stars.

You make the night a joy for me
when you kiss my lips and I
fall fast asleep dreaming…
of your beauty, your kiss, and
your smile and I sleep so
satisfied.

When I rise in the morning
I find the essence of your kiss
is still upon my lips, and I feel
the fire of your love’s desire,
and of the flames that always burn
within you heart.

And you are so wonderful
to be near, very tantalizing
to touch, and so amazing
to know…

For you take my breath away.

Premium Member Until the Fight Is Done

My confusion comes from too much doing. During the news
eating cheese and crackers, drinking wine, thinking the world
needs me.

Or the falling leaves, the days shorter but so much brighter.
How the cloud cover of the canopy has lifted to reveal
maybe God.

The longest continuous democracy may end in another theocracy.
A bunch of voodooists with their hocus pocus blessings
and understandings.

Bombs and poison. Grief. Chiseled, tearless face.
Chants gregorian. Her sad, clear, soulful missives from
the city.

Unbelievable acorn crop this year! Skate on them
like marbles. Last year was a maple year. The ash crop
significant, too.

But not the cherries. Or a single pear. Blackberries
held back too. Sure the towers were a violation, but they came to
hold community.

One stands not apart or alone but an individual within
his or her platoon. Committed to the mission and survival of
the platoon.

Fedex leaves a package. There is or is no anthrax
in it. It is our disappointment as Americans that the world cannot
be trusted.

Yes, New York is the enemy and brother of Kabul. How
does one reconcile those differing communities and be a non-
violent human?

With words. Wendell Berry's words. And service such as
the secretaries of state give, leaving when one's time and work
is done.

Staying in the diatonic. Agreeing first on rules of engagement.
Then engaging. Not stopping the fight or thought or song until the fight
is done.

A Genuine Smile

A genuine smile joyfully gives to a day
Much more value than one really knows
It's more than the gold light of the sun
More soothing than the moons soft glow

It reaches down deep within one's soul
Making such inspired feelings to arise
It makes a heart's flame leap forward
From the dormant place where it did lie

It causes a young heart to begin to pound
And it brings about a shortness of breath
It adds new meaning to life in one's mind
Along with a glow that will always last

It's a treasure chest full of beautiful jewels
More valuable than a single pearl of great worth
For a genuine smile is valued so much more
Than any treasure which can be found in the earth.

Being Kind

Being Kind.

Being kind is the right thing to do,
It will always make its way back to you.
In a world where there is so much hate,
We should make kindness a way to communicate.

On every hand there is so much despair,
Why is it so hard to show love and care?
Knowing right and doing wrong, should not be the way,
But sharing our love should be shown in what we do and say.

It is our duty as children of the Lord above,
To be compassionate and show our love.
Don’t walk away, when you can lend a hand,
Most of all, for God we must take our stand.

The old and young, any color or creed,
It should be our business to do a good deed.
Embrace with a hug, or say something nice,
Being kind shouldn’t be hard – or made a sacrifice.

Your kindness could make someone’s day,
Just by the kindness you’ve shown in something you say.
I truly feel we should replace all the wrong and hate,
And make kindness a way to communicate.

You’ll be blessed by doing something good,
By doing what God said we should.
Just remember to show a smile, and be truly kind,
You’ll see its way back to you - you will certainly find.

He Is There

He Is There.

No matter where we go, God is there.
There is not a place He does not share.

We may think we can run and hide,
But God is always by our side.

He knows what sin we may have made,
And with our prayers He can make them fade.

He knows each drop of dew that may fall,
And He knows the sparrow when it calls.

He knows the place of each grain of sand,
And holds the stars in His hand.

By the whispering of the winds, we can hear His voice,
And by the songs of birds – His name rejoice.

Don’t ever think that God isn’t there,
No matter where you roam – that road He’ll share.

Butterflies

When ever I see the butterflies flying
I am reminded of your smiling face,
As I see them taking wing into the sky
I feel emotions which are never displaced

For deep in my heart also live the butterflies
As they come to life within my heart each day
While I count the many sweet memories of you
Which in my thoughts and dreams now stay

The sheer brilliance of their many vibrant colors
Produce a vivid rainbow deep within my mind
Which fills my heart with such an unwavering joy
Allowing me to enjoy them for endless times

And the butterflies will be my dearest treasure
Leaving me never again quite feeling the same
For the peace they bring can never be measured
As on their wings are gently imprinted your name.

A Broken Man

A Broken Man.

A mans heart may fail, and beat slowly,
A mans eyes may dim, and not see as clearly.
A mans strength may weaken, and his pace may be slow.
A mans thought may be confused with disease.
A mans voice may change with age.
A mans touch may be altered with pain.

But a man is not known by his age or strength,
But by the friends he has made along the way,
And by his kindness his life will ever be restored.

Premium Member All I Need

Little I ask, my wants are few,
I only wish a roof and home -
a simple one this man will do
that I may call my own.
To within its walls live and age
with a memoir to fill my page.

Plain fare is all I need for me,
a ration a day to hearty fill,
and oft to satisfy a thirsty plea
water my dry lips to spill.
And so granted if I should ask
a cold stubbie or whisky flask.

I care not for gold and land,
nor chattel or title to obey -
just a mortgage and at hand
   money enough to pay.
I only this need ask and pose
lest the bank on me foreclose.

My clothes I do proudly wear,
no robes of bejewelled ties,
for king ‘n yeoman are I swear
   equal all in God’s eyes!
Nay, I am not of that noble ilk
and need no garments of silk.

I do not seek what I need not
like a rich man’s cars or toys -
my contentment is with my lot
   and in life’s simple joys.
A humble man beholden for
if this world favour me more.

Truly not I begrudge no man
his Hope, his Fate, his Love -
I seek truths none more than
   the word of God above!
And to behold if it is His will
His grace in life to death until.

A law firm partner living on Madison Avenue
bought a farm in the country. What a strange thing to do!
Oliver Wendell Douglas and Hungarian-born wife,
would head for Hooterville to start a new life.
Oliver and Lisa moved from their high-rise penthouse,
to a ramshackle farm with a dilapidated house.
Oliver wanted to leave New York City and Times Square,
to live in the country with chores to do, and fresh air.
To be dragged from New York, to a life that is bucolic,
became disastrous to wife Lisa, and quite tragic.
However, she held her husband Oliver very dear.
In this new life, poor Lisa had to persevere.

Douglas bought this farm from a crook named Mr. Haney.
Haney kept trying something new to get more money.
Oliver deals with the absent-minded Mr. Kimball.
He has a scatterbrained farmhand named Eb, but that’s not all.
Oliver climbs a telephone pole to make a phone call.
Neighbors Fred and Doris Ziffel have a pig named Arnold.
All except Oliver knows what Arnold has told.
Our Oliver would get himself into jams constantly.
All these things combine to make a great comedy.

Always On My Mind

I think a tender thought of loving you
So deep inside of my mind
A beautifully, wonderful lovely thought
And I think it all the time

I dream a soft dream of wanting you
So very deep inside of my heart
A blissful tranquil dream of wanting
And of my my mind it's a daily part

And all the thoughts and dreams I dream
Are always of only you
For you are the only one my love
Who can cure my lonely blues

And I think this thought of loving you
Always so deep inside my mind
A beautiful wonderful thought of love
And I still think it all of the time

...whenever you are away from me.

Will Never Fail

Strengthen my spirit with your precious love
Always increasing my faith deep within
Help me, Lord, to overcome all adversity
And over worldly sins always help me to win

Unlock the deep in-dwelling power of faith
The spiritual essence which only comes from you
Pick me up each day and make me so clean
Guide me always in what i should pursue

Please never let the enemy overwhelm me
Always protect me Lord with your hands
Setting me always upon the solid rock
Whose power nothing can ever withstand

For you are the very first one to love me
In that time with you before I was born
Always keep me safe within your embrace
So I will never again taste of satan's scorn

For I am a child of yours the one living God
And of your sustaining love my heart will tell
Because of your perfect gift of salvation
My faith in your promises, Lord, will never fail.
