I WISH I WEREN’T A TURTLE
by
JOHN M. ARRIBAS
I wish I weren’t a turtle, I’d rather be a hare
I beat him every time, but no one seems to care
I carry this armor plate every where I go
Designs on them are worthless, its just for show
But I’m just a plain ole turtle, not a clever terrapin
I stay distant from the water cause, folks, I can’t swim
I stick to terra firma where my claws get a good grab
I wish I could propel sideways, like my ole pal the crab
I might be slow and some say totally pragmatic
If I get to my destination, I am completely ecstatic
I’ve got some kin; that are never ever outsmarted
Go far out to sea then return to where they started
You may have heard of them, Loggerhead, Leatherback
Hawksbill, Green. They are mariners seldom seen
And for those of you that don’t know didley
Let me introduce you to the Olive Ridley
They cruise at will through the seven seas
While I stumble constantly into forest debris
As you can see my family members travel far
Yet, I’m lucky crossing the street, avoiding a car
And I have a plethora of enemies as well
I’d have been eaten long ago, if not for this shell
I’m most vulnerable during the mating season
Rivals try to upend me to claim the warm one
So that’s how it goes, each day is the previous
Winter will soon be here, I’ve got to get serious
I’ll comb the swampy areas for some real soft mud
I’ll bury myself and hope spring won’t bring a flood
I’ll shut down all my systems, I won’t even breathe
Til the sun the warms me, I’ll constantly utter a prayer
That when I awake I’ve been transformed into a hare

Stalled!
Let me tell you a story
One day, near summer’s end
Martha and her husband
Went canoeing with a friend
Suddenly a log’s there!
And what can Martha do?
Then she’s in the water
She tipped from her canoe
The canoe was righted
But she’s still in the creek
“I cannot climb back in there!
Oh, I am just too weak!”
Then the men were thinking
About what they could do
To somehow get her out
And into the canoe
Then their friend gave warning
He pointed, “Look up there!
In the logs and branches
I saw a snake–beware!”
Now it has been proven
That miracles are true
For when they looked at Martha
She’s back in the canoe!

A large pile of elephant excrement is neither resembling a tortoiseshell coat or a brown handbag but playing dodge ball on a busy motorway could be considered to be akin to a wonky attic vibrating at over 10000 kilowatts a second. Dare to cross a spade with a diamond. And hearts often laugh in a club house city. Ooh wow a calamity clam jumping around. Greatly releasing a board game over an icy rink. Terminate then germinate. Pointless picking puck ups playing poker. How remarkable the dark maroon moving grinning bush. With shades. Trying a terrapin waltz should not ever be attempted in a casserole dish. For beans have eyes and hair and roll roll rolly round and round. Particularly on angled blades of grass. Next in the line is a warbling wheel. Placket of a packet packeted and peckpockpick. Dancing with a mane. Whooshing through atmospheric conditions and pressurized promenades. Always the lark of look. Always the dim of dinner. And now go eat a dim sum bracket wearing a long sleeved pullover whilst chatting to a very pleasant and personable flower. *** floristic fauna frantically feeling fakes *** gun grab geraniums ghostly got grabbed *** underground undergrowth uniquely underwent underwater. *** unification *** ha ha ha centrepiece of soul. ***
Boil water nice and hot;
Cut up vegetables in the pot.
Sprinkle herbs and seasoning in
Now toss in the terrapin.
Turtle soup, fresh from the sea;
Sailors’ cuisine for a century.
One more trick to make you well;
Ground up and drink the tortoise shell.
When i share my hopes and ambitions, she gives me a derisory laugh.
Her dereliction,as my better half,of supporting my strides, worry's me.
Not fulfilling her desiderata of comfort, sinks my ego below the sand, drags my dreams against the sylvan of this island of dissatisfaction.
Money vindicates time from the poor.
That's a minatory statement from a deranged lover.
I'm not a derring-do in an animated dote story,am as real as the sole of a terrapin.
I descry your desiccated heart.
No more fear,no sympathy,zero tolerance.
Vicissitude of covalent romance is at threshold.
Your bolder than ever, saying wise things of truth that shake me.
I act tenaciously to keep us together, then you utter another tentative sentence.
I pause and remember,Responsibility is de rigueur in a family union.

Oooh now then. Oh just wow. A scarlet salivating sentinel sentiment is wafting air at that door. Blowing. Blowing is not bubbling so do not count powder puffs or smoke globules that radiate sideways. It is wise to brush the hair of radishes if kept as pets as jess the juniper plant will inform crystal curtains if the duty of brush is not attended to. And the duty of brush is a popular sight for passing breezes in microscopic skirts. Pitter patter titter tattle then. Tittering teasing tenacious tingles. Trapping. Tripping. Taking. Then up and away with all the finer scented procrustean produce. In a giant orbital cloud. Decorated in proud prints and self determined make up that costs way over the price of a single bag of flour to dust the cheeks. It is more often that a mock moronic macro macaroni makes an energy beam to an enemy of eggplants. But eggplants can be radically and powerfully transforms and transported into the wide dance halls of many a lunar ocean ballroom. Dance carefully carrying the sand, the ships, and the oven gloves. We wouldn't want spillage would we? So very wasteful. Wasteful waist coated wasters wantonly willing war. And a five centimetre slug jet skiing on the wild tepid waters at ease with all possibilities of a handwritten swirly note with a flowery kiss. Playful and play. Playing and placing. And the sharp wide angle from a spotted viewfinder is never quite enough to seal a deal with a seal, a serpent and a pillar of margarine. Quanta quintet. And a portal of pigs parading in a seventy seven acre of orchard pie. Monkeys dangling from trees throwing dirt at ignorance. And the jester fish trots by on the shire horse on a blue sunny afternoon. Age after age after age after age after age. Clever created canopies cuddle cute clams. Clap then. One two three four clap clap clap. And give a loud cheer like hurrrraaahhhhhhh. Then lie down then stand up. Quickly. Central controlled colonies collect. Drag no tin of ham or peas to the airports. Z quintillion Z quintessential Z at fifty four rotating square pegs with long curvaceous legs ti twelve turkeys tuning tinned terrapin tunes. Bing bang bong bung in a bungalow. Laughing. Like ha ha ha ha ha. And a cute semi polarised cat in a tight fitting bathing hat in a bathroom. Z and that was the latest news. Z
Far away from harsh reality,
Where monotony of life prevails,
Let me live in the dreamiest world,
Every moment to jump with joy,
Folding and unfolding in middle air !
Sitting on the back of giant terrapin,
Dancing to the tunes back and forth,
Rhyming with the drifting sea tides,
Unending rungs of ladder are visible,
Hierarchy of desires, climb up the sky !
Twined strings that take me to heavens,
Where Freedom of body, freedom of spirit,
Get an essence maybe fiction and fantasy,
Truth may be a stranger, fiction is truer,
Be it an illusion, must Rock my world !

Lucky is a red ear slider terrapin who currently lives with me.
For all intents and purposes, let's refer to Lucky as a she.
I named her Lucky because it was lucky that I just so happened to be
at the same place where Lucky was abandoned so very cold heartedly.
In a small fish bowl, on the curb, left out with the trash was she,
but I happened by, saw her and rescued Lucky.
She now lives a life of relative comfort and safety
in the 55 gallon aquarium that I have provided for she,
where she can bask on her float or go swimming freely,
or forage through the gravel searching for something to eat.
Lucky's stay with me however is only temporary.
When she has grown large enough to successfully compete
among other foragers in a habitat more naturally,
that will be the day when I inevitably set Lucky free
to live the rest of her life the way it was intended to be.
I would prefer however in all honesty
a man made pond on someone's private property,
perhaps stocked with fish, frogs and other turtles already
where routine feedings occur regularly.
Should anyone know of such a place that would freely
accept a red ear slider turtle into their sanctuary,
I would appreciate it if you could somehow inform me.
Heartfelt appreciation would also be extended from my gal Lucky.
The ocean’s wide the ocean deep
and in the soup the turtle sleep.
Some live on land and we know that is true,
then we call them tortoise, land lubbers like you.
They been around a long, long, time
longer than man and their extinctions a crime!.
Some like their soup salty some like it plain
so, the ones in lakes we call terrapin.
All of us came from the soup of the sea,
we all have shells though no turtles be we.
Like turtles when scared tend to pull in their heads
hiding like children deep under the bed.
All the lessons here seems very clear
be kind to all creatures in the Soup we have here.
Don’t pull in your neck, stick it right out
For the love of each heart here is what Soup’s about.
Spellbinding place where rainbow water flows
Frogspawn and tadpoles such enormous change
Arcadian forest where pixie dust blows
All creatures are welcome no one estranged.
Twilight is magical what will happen?
Atmosphere filled with dire baritone croak
Whispering rustle, low-lying bracken
Fae folk appear under red velvet cloak.
Fireflies lighting wonderful oasis
Elderly toad croaks musical score
Pompous owl tries to intimidate
Proud of position he is the law.
Beetles scurrying they are so anxious
Happy invitation it's party time
Cantankerous bees prickly as cactus
Covered in honey they buzz "all mine".
Terrapin plays music on his bassoon
Boisterous sound that creatures adore
Leprechaun baked magical mushroom
Mesmeric food eaten they all chant more!

A friendship so young afford the time in the eyes of a groggy old terrapin
Is warm to the forgotten touch as a single candle on a cold winter's night
A comfortable brightness in the midst of dark, melts away lonely paraffin
Leaving the rinds of a once sweeter fruit, to wither from painful sight
But amidst such loss of loving feeling, a yellow flame sucks at its wick
Drawing up from the heated wax something so soft, something unbeknownsably new
To forget one's past, is to lose the vigor of today, and leave's tomorrow feeling sick
But to grow from one's history will take the bite from the present's wicked brew
I wish for a chance for the yellow to grow red, as red as a springtime rose
For dark emerald eyes, among the deepest beauty, to look among her common moors
Another chance, the second among tenfold of friendship and rhythmic prose
That Beauty will love the ugly duckling, and you will find my heart in yours
Quitting coffee and should it kill me
Want to say that it's been fun
Sidled up to this specific teat
Not long after my first weaning done
My body trying to clue me in
As I clung to my drug of choice
No longer willing to continue
In stifling my tired kidney's voice
Just read it slows down the flow of lymph
to a toddling terrapin crawl
Immunities highway like that of L.A.'s
Cannot abide it you all
My plan to reduce to a cup a day
Followed by a day after another
It's warmth will be missed the aroma as well
As a weanling ripped from its mother (sob)
Truthfully not looking forward to
Shifting to water and herbal teas
Saying goodbye to my old friend caffeine
Long considered the hairy bee's knees
a title is not a teat nor a terrapin tank
The seventh pole in a cloud is swaying with the weights in a sky gymnasium. Gymnastics of giant clusters and catacombs catalogued by awesome aerodynamics of the asteroids whose charm outsways the globule passing in a prism. Misbehaving mingling merry men make mangy money mince. And the beam from a seal curve is said to be portraying the act of many a sleeping pork chop and chipolata chapels roar at this in great amusement for to alight the tasks is to tread upon the ground like a table rushing to a station. So be aware then. So be careful then. East beast eyes and a warbling western warrior wearing wellingtons. North now noted nightshift. And. South state stoic. Stoicism of a sudden beam of torchlight held by a two acre frog. And a mystified moon grins at all of this charade. Pleasant pleasing pheasants. Great isn't it? Object to the clap of a cupboard drawer said the dish. Haha the sinks are sinking in the morning dew. With harbours of plates in foam. Haha militia and milk creating carnivorous cows. Wave after wave after wave of affection,
caressing
water
fall misty whispers
come tenderly cascading
The tropic mountain air passes by
the cool seaside
with terrapin flair ... that breezy, slow pace stride
Gently the crescent moon
ebb and flows the tide
Removing her twilight veil,
I see the peace sign of the snow geese in flight,
as I feel the other half of my heart
flutter with quiet ease ~ Softly with silhouette thoughts of desire
It’s so skin good to know
how warm the westerly wind blow
In the turtledove hour of the swan glow night,
between the starlit sighs,
I serenely hear a three syllable echo
Cascading wave after wave after wave,
the pulse beautiful sound
from elevated kissed lips gently rolls
Recurring bosom vibrations
keep oscillating
three-part harmony, so hug tone mellow
From the billowy moon dreams above,
to the pillow sleep slopes below,
I lullaby hear the three syllable echo
Time after time over time,
I’m forever enchanted by that joyous wind chime
Whithersoever it wedding bell goes,
I will surely vow follow
These Mt. Carmel ears can always hear
that three syllable echo
