Best Subway Poems
Gum In a N.Y SubwayRetired sweetness paints
a tiled mosaic of
unpredictable patterns.
Black, brown shapes
spatter the
grey concrete of
an underground kingdom.
The fresh ones burn
pink and seafoam
green against
this steely blue
and yellow lined world.
The stickiness clings
onto shining
out of spectrum,
before becoming
another dot
in dark masses....

The Poet In the SubwaySeated in the station
At a table he had brought,
A poet (as his sign announced)
Typed poems that he had wrought.
His hands were ready at the keys
To tap out a request;
Just choose a topic and you’d hear it
In his words expressed.
He offered me his email list;
I added...

Subway Ride I ride the Subway every time.
The people that I see there are not my kind.
Some have phones on which they play games, others talk like no ones there.
Some read and some look around.
Some listen to music that you can't hear a sound.
It's so strange...

Anonymity In the Subwaywatch the crowd...faces
without looking at each other’s eyes,
as if iodized by the pang
of forlorn gasps…
nameless, alone, they grip
on the hand-rests
from a dreary night where roofs of anonymity
blind them all
empty, empty ...

Subway SalsaA subway musician with salsa-like beat
In the sea of commuters, all surging,
Made some do a double-take at such a treat,
While out of the crowd was emerging…
A couple who dropped both their bags and their coats
To grasp shoulders and waists to start dancing.
They swiveled their hips...

Second Avenue SubwayThey’re building a subway
(They call it the Q)
To run underneath
Second Avenue.
It’s nearing completion
(But way overdue).
They’re hoping by New Year’s
To have its debut.
Construction’s so noisy
(If you only knew!)
That the neighborhood feels
It’s been getting the screw.
But now they’re on deadline
(With much ballyhoo)
And the streets are so tight
You...

Stuck On the SubwayA sudden stop, the engines shut
As folks glance up from reading.
Some shrug, some cluck and others (me!)
Have faces pinched and pleading.
A minute passes, maybe two,
But then there’s an announcement:
“A passenger is sick, so we
Are stuck,” is the pronouncement.
I take a breath and try my best
To...

By the SubwaySitting by the steps of the old avenue subway
In his ragged long sleeves shirt, he completes my day
In my year long rides, he never missed to say
Words of day to day sunshine ray
He's a man who never begged nor asked for a thing
A day without...

Subway On a SagwayWanted to celebrate my new favorite mode of non-walking
Now I can do the trash talking
Will finance mine and pay, pay, pay
But cruising on my Sagway
Stopped by the cleanest fast food place today
A regular at the local Subway
Chicken Teryaki and sweet onion sauce
With this sub many...

SubwayIt's a short fat sub that I'll grab to bite
Where the juice runs down my gums
As the flavour pools upon my tongue
and my grip becomes all thumbs
And I start to chew while breaking peppers
As the juice explodes and cools
While the taste seems strong and lasts...

SubwayI can't breath
I know it's time
Say goodbye
I stare at the ground
It's time to go home
I don't want to
I want to be with you
I want to stare into your eyes
I want to feel your lips
Pressing against mine
Your tongue as it licks
My heart
Your arms...

The Victoria Line
hanging straps and travel apps.
beeping doors and littered floors.
