Ajoke

Ajoke
...... to my Ajoke, to your ajoke

It was at oja ale I first saw you
Your smile that day ajoke
Robbed me of my timidity
And I forgot of my reticence

When I saw you at the river
And caught how she made your face wet
Until I saw your tender legs leave the stream
I thought you were Yeye's first dughter

In the rain yesterday
I envied the little rain drops
As they ran happily from your shuku
Down To your heavenly bosom

There's something about you ajoke
Something special about you omo asake
Not too delicate for a queen
Yet not too daring for a princess

Your feet ajoke
They're not too tender to dance the bata dance
Not too firm to kneel to the grey
Agile enough to make the eyins bleed sweet oil

Come to my home ajoke
Come n teach my pots how to make good soup
Let me taste our love
From those morsels of affection

Come and make my home
And teach our daughters how to make efo riro
Come and build our family
And teach our sons how to prostrate

Let's go to odo oba
And let her envy our flowing love
Follow me to the igbo ode
And let's tell the iroko of our evergreen romance

And when we're tired ajoke
And my eyes too weak to see your wrinkled face
When our grandkids play hide n seek in our ode
I'd be holding your hand

Oja ale- night market; Yeye- goddess of river; shuku: a style of hair plaiting by Yoruba women ; bata: a type of dance in Yoruba culture ; eyin: palm kernel ; efo riro: vegetable soup ; odo oba: Oba(a queen in Yoruba myths) river ; Igbo Ode : thick forest ; Iroko : evergreen tree in the tropical regions ; Ode: interior of huts

Book: Radiant Verses: A Journey Through Inspiring Poetry

I Am Africa, I Am Man

I am Africa, I am man
Hear my drums, know my heart beat
My sorrow is not metered in iambic lines
Life does not speak that way
So artificial this enumeration of joy
So false this constant rise and fall of tone
I fish the tides
Sometimes the water rises above the rock
And stay a long, long time
Like a dream that won't give up
Sometimes the water recedes far out
Lingering at the bar
Waiting for the moon to show her breast
Watching silently like a star
For one ear Nana Oba to divorce me
From this culture that is my hell.
I am Africa, I am man
My fingers running fast on antelope skin
Cross the bata light and sweet like a caress
Like rainfall on the Serengeti
Like bird call for Nana Oshun's memory

So when I put my hands around your waist
Sliding my finger over the contours of our embrace
Searching for lake Nakuru under your dress
Down from the Kilmanjaro of your breast
And whisper my feelings in your ears
In cross-rhythms, kora and mbira playing
Hot like khamsin, passionate like the yamo
Sucking on your tongue for life
Seeking the umbilical water for my pain
What care for anapestic sentiments
Trochaic promises, dactylic stories
I need you in all the wonder of your loveliness
In all the moods that living tell
In our orbiting exodus of earth and hell
No time now for phony precisions
I speak as I am, as I feel emotions
Dancing on my finger tips
Dancing on the velvet smooth of drums
Ladling at your Nakura, lapping at your lips
All tribal, my body hums
For the stolen glory of my history
For the cinder of theories
That make me victim twice in my misery
I am Africa, I am man
Hear my prophecy, I will succeed!

Eko is ever radiant as the sun and the star
Her fortunes makes her markets rival to none;
Do you need food spices? Danfo knows the route to Oyingbo
Ladipo market is home to all automobile parts you ever think of
Your electronics solution lies in Alaba market
Attires of many colours that makes Eko the home of fashion is there in Balogun market
No wonder the mamooth population of different tribes

Red Soil

Cosmopolitan it may seem
Humanity bursting at the seam
Diverse colours, almost obscene
All are heard, none are seen

Uniformity in diversity
Chaos in serenity
Ugliness doing beautifully
Still a village disguised as a city

Myriad and diversified
Complex and haughty
Confident, ununified
Of adulation, always worthy

Edo!
My land forever o!
Oba gha to kpe e
Ise….

Edo

O great people in a great forest land
From the land of the Igodomigodo to the kukuruku
I know you and the tragedy of your heroic tale
You are the pulse of a great nation
The heartbeat of many tribes, cultures, and beliefs
Seated in their midst from east, west, south, and north.
Oba gha to kpe e, the great conqueror
With you, no kingdom matched your wealth and domain
From the east, west, south, and north
Your reign is like the eagle over the sky
And like a mother hen, sheltering her chicks
With walls, moats, forest, and war cries.
Great land, your artistry is beyond compare
Woman, your beauty and history are adorned in bronze
The Portuguese came to spy on your beauty
The British came with a false romance
And they ravaged her
Even the forest land, the northern men assault
Against her will, her culture, and belief.
And my love lay wasted and abandoned

O great people in a great forest land
Arise as we put our past behind us
Today we have healed our wounds
By our diligence and resoluteness
Binis, Esan, Afemai, all who dwell in the land
Let us together build a great land
And be the heartbeat of a great nation!

On Love

Upon lovers
it dawned
that Love
turns on
everything
and it comes
in all forms
fit for
everyone
there is not
“just one”
but rather
many
for in the land
of Love is Plenty
and simply put
it’s fit
quite right

“one love”
was written
and many
were smitten
with a light
but then….

a misquote happened
in the land of "right"
that long ago
gave lovers fright
as the love of One

almost
vanished from sight

seas became dim
a sun became shame
the land fell back
to a hollow form
where flowers dried
and worries loomed
all because Lovers
missed
what’s understood

so then It came
to try again
bringing forth
a second hand
reaching deep
to understand
what
“just happened”
so long ago
because just what
had frightened
what Creation
was about
“so below”

in a garden
there was lay
lying
only one row…

“come find me”
it would one day call
and “I’ll find you”
was the final haul
“so now they’ve come
to see us all…”

.
.
.
came
ala
amor
anteros
and eros
benten with brigit
and demeter
as heros
cupid with flora
and hathor
with hora
isis in juno as
ken and kupalo
lada in lempo
as mariana
kissed ken
and oh… breathe…

oba knew

opps gave osirus
smiles too
for quite a while
as the Lovers grew
a list not many
if the any know

wuzzle was got
and a plot was not
to be a report
of ‘no show’

rather instead
Creations ink bled
with names
in a delightful glow
an endless thread
from a timeless bed
where Love IS talkin’
to be the cause
because IT’S
the One
without a clause.
“Santa”

~I’m not done with you ;)
every.one.Loves.
It’s true.

I give thanks
for the fuzzy snuggles
from them too.

.
.

inspiration is this list of love gods
