Candle Maker

Candle maker Iva Bentwick's
business couldn't take a trick,
So he changed his name
to one not so lame,
Now business is pretty slick.

alternate last line: Now many candles are being lit.

Premium Member Elvis Presley

Cool Fact: Elvis Presley holds the record for the most platinum certificates issued by the RIAA, with 70. Elvis Presley's records spent a cumulative total of 1,155 weeks on the UK singles chart since his first hit Heartbreak Hotel released on May 11, 1956.

Everything went crazy when Elvis came upon the scene.
Ladies loved his sexy style; with controversy, he made history.
'Viva Las Vegas', one of his many films, put him up on the big screen.
In all the world, an icon and the King of Rock was he,
Shaking his Elvis pelvis so provocatively!

Perpetually has Elvis Presley’s huge estate
Remained one of the richest of celebrities we prize.
Even now, he’s the singer that most folks impersonate.
So handsome was this star with jet black hair and ice blue eyes.
‘Love Me Tender’ easily could make
Each and every young girl swoon.
Yesterday till today, still idolized, he died much too soon.

Butterfly

A butterfly lit on a leaf
And drank the Sacred Dew
That there had gathered in the dark
While yet the day was new.

Atop the blessed Iva tree
From which the dewdrops fell
Condensed from rivers and the sea,
He humbly drank his fill

He stayed there till the night came on
And the tree stirred. In its breast
Awoke the sleepy willow song
As she wakened from her rest

At this, the butterfly arose
And flew into the night
She fell back into sweet repose
And he vanished out of sight

O! Butterflies and gentle birds
Who pluck the sacred herb
So gently visit the Iva tree
Do not that queen disturb

And you may hear at eventide
The blessing of her song
That rings against the valley's side
Throughout the evening long.

Imbibe essence that makes sense

Tomes of scriptures, too much to know,
Too little time, woes, strife on toe,
Track what lies at the core,
Of crux, crucial from lore,
Swans do as from water milk draw.
______________________
Translation |16.10.2024| scriptures, knowledge, time, woes, essence, milk, water

Poet’s note: Sanskrit has thousands of verses of wisdom called Subhashhitam. Even in ancient time in India it was felt that there was too much to know, too much to read/memorise, time is just not enough, and many a snag in the way. What should then be done? Focus on what is of essence, just as a swan separates milk from water (this is a poetic imagination/metaphor). The transliteration of the Sanskrit verse follows:

Aneka shaastram, bahu veditavyam,
alpah cha kaalah, bahavah cha vighnaah |
Yat saara-bhootam tat upaasitavyam,
hamsah yathaa kshheeram iva ambu madhyaat ||

Friendship of the good and bad

Long at first, truncating then on,
Short to start, sounder as goes on,
Like forenoon and post-noon shadows,
Friendship of the good and bad goes.
________________________
Translation |34.09.2024| good, bad, friendship

Poet’s note: Sanskrit has thousands of verses of wisdom called Subhashhitam. This verse talks about friendship and compares it with the shadows cast from sunrise to noon, and then from noon to sunset-- long to start with and then shortening (of the evil), and short to begin with but growing big as time passes (of the good). The transliteration of the Sanskrit verse follows:

Aarambha gurvee, kshhayinee kramena, laghvee puraa, vriddhi-matee cha pashchaat |
Dinasya poorvaardha paraardha bhinnaa, chhaaya iva maitreem khala sajjanaanaam ||

Let delight trail plight

Joys thrill upon suffering grief,
In dense darkness lamp’s light as if,
Good days all gone, should one get bad,
All alive, poor soul lives like dead.

Translation |31.10.2024|happiness, joy, grief, men

Poet’s note: Sanskrit has thousands of verses of wisdom called Subhashhitam. Like the light of a lamp in utter darkness, happiness that follows after a period of sorrows feels good. One that experiences poverty after a period of plentiful feels utter helplessness. He lives like a dead man though alive. The transliteration of the Sanskrit verse follows:

Sukham hi duhkhaani anubhooya shobhate,
ghana andhakaareshhu iva deepa-darshanam |
Sukha-anta yah yaati narah daridrataa,
dhritah shareerena mritah sah jeevati ||

And a now generation started
Increase in population was
An automatic possess
So the tale of old time

Bosom Beeping From Blouse

Outgo way ahead
Than income if stirs man’s head,
She in a shrunk blouse,
Although from a cultured house,
Oh looks a bit lowly bred.

Old man as if with winsome wife

The learning of he who lacks poise,
In coward’s hand arms carried rife,
Contentment there’s, nor calm repose
To old man with a winsome wife.
_______________________
Translation |07.10.2024| knowledge, weapons, timid, wife, old man

Poet’s note: Sanskrit has thousands of verses of wisdom called Subhashhitam. Words of wisdom on knowledge of a man who lacks confidence and poise, weapons in the hands of a coward. They do not help much like a beautiful young wife of an old man. The transliteration of the Sanskrit verse follows:

Praagalbhya-heenasya narasya vidyaa, shastram yathaa kaa-purushhasya haste |
Na triptim utpaadayate shareere, vriddhasya daaraa iva darshaneeyaa ||

Romance From Satan

Our first romance was Satan’s pressed buttons
In my presence, her blouse lost three buttons.
And I, helper, to fix back the buttons
While she had it on and watched my patterns,
Leave giving my eyes to meet a buxom
They were just bound to decide was awesome!

Knocking opportunity quite handsome,
My coughs, then, began to be troublesome…

Also, the handiwork of her red lipstick,
On her lips lodged for who would heavy ones lick.

With her closer, time bomb began to tick,
Nothing to stop me, save on head hit stick;
For some minutes swallowing saliva
Like had ex-lover a Charley Iva:
The lipstick proved her good painter,
My chances of making U-turn fainter…

Now with my child; what type of character?
Please, if it’s female, watch her character!

Just explained I have a pregnancy,
My rejoicing victim Neighbor Nancy.

Wisdom to one not wise

To uninformed ears
The best of pen plain appears,
To him who can’t see,
A cross-eyed girl is beauty,
To hard to hear, jeers are cheers.

Arms like lovely lotus stem

Known for arms of a lovely lotus stem,
Visage of moon’s sleepless silver,
Eyes like smiling lilies in lake,
And smile of a full moon’s sliver,
To win as wife, a woman of such fame,
Who’d not greatest of gamble stake?

Minds Tides

The trees rustling, sound like the oceans
Coming up to shore and going out

Slowly calming sounds of the motions
Knowing a crab is walking all about

My life is also like the oceans
Constantly seeking approval of life

All we have is our emotions
Screaming into our eyes

As I’m laying here, not by a beach or a crab
But reality is sad, but clear

My back is flat as if on a slab
Restfully and peaceful, but longing to be there

Mind slowly shutting down
Darkness claims my body

My dreams are spotty
But always around.
